Background Umbraco Email Marketing
If I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what would you say? Umbraco Email Marketing
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries now, email marketing has been Dominated by the identical big players for the last ten years. Which means they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So today, in this review, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to find out whether it really stands its ground against the big boys…

Like most email marketing providers Nowadays, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the software.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, site, Business, address, business size, list size and even the kind of content you plan to send.
Then, you need to confirm your Site (or domain name).
This remains part of the acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is associated to this domain so they could email you a verification link.
Once you’ve completed these Steps, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, assess your Site, and determine whether you’re a good fit for their service.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to utilize the software to create campaigns and perform with the attributes, but you won’t have the ability to send anything before accepted.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
But while these steps aren’t perfect for getting started, it Does help stop malicious users from hurting everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to handle The majority of your email marketing.
(We will get to automations shortly, do not worry.)
But whether it is a brand new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always some excuse to send a more immediate email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Produce Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, including subject line, from title and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not open your broadcast email, with the option of changing the subject line and email content.
– RSS campaign: Create a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to readers using your site’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few additional choices, most of these will follow The exact same step-by-step procedure of a standard campaign.
So let us walk you through it.
Once you click on to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Select a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can switch to the Templates tab and select from among the pre-designed email templates — that will move you to the dragn’ drop editor by default.
At the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to select From which is somewhat on the low side, but the layouts are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you would just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I will select the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the blocks in the sidebar to include different Kinds of content to your email, such as videos, merchandise columns, and social connections.
After making your adjustments, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be taken to the recipients’ choices where you can choose your groups or sections.
The tab also allows you To build segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting isn’t quite perfect.
Finally, right before sending, then you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, whether that’s instantly, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Umbraco Email Marketing
Handling Your Subscribers
Having granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most essential facets of any email marketing software today.
Because highly personalized efforts are necessary if You are searching to increase opens, clicks, and, most importantly, your conversions.
And while many providers allow you to”label” readers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different approach.
When you start up your subscriber dash, you’ll notice two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically rules.
Your subscribers belong to a section only when they meet the Specified rules, and are automatically inserted or eliminated accordingly.
Here is what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can also blend Principles, in addition to an alternate rule when the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for groups, and also the difference in name, These behave much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but finally decided against it)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are updated manually or via an Automation principle — which we’ll get to in a minute — and they have no value besides what you call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite delivers a hand in the event you’re unsure:
Fundamentally, groups are much more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments permit you to bulge multiple subscribers together according to a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I will admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. In any case, they are optional.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own fields, such as name, company, and country.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers along with Your custom field data in separate columns… or may easily add these fields to a types which will only apply to prospective readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I created and added to a form:
I will not go too much to the form Things here because I have a whole section on this below, but this is the strategy I’d recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field data from fresh Readers, you are able to pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Customized field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it is important to know this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it’s fair to state MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on stage. Umbraco Email Marketing
If you’re not impressed with what you’ve seen up to Now, then maybe The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, you’ll be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Isn’t winning any awards, but it will offer a fantastic foundation to work from if, like most people, you do not have that natural eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all finally do the same task; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is already better than a few dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the basic building blocks, you can use elements like Hero segments, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
It will not be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Decent set of form building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there is a whole lot to cover .
Let us begin with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then put on your site to show it on specific pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer allows you To personalize everything from the kind style, subjects, background, title, input fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which Provides you a Opportunity To visualize your backup in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there’s more to some form than just its physical appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure the way the Form works, such as adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which will replace the embedded form also prevents users .
Last but certainly not least, you Can check the way your form displays on mobile by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes , but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that is an Summary of the Embedded form but like I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of this setup process is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth selection, they do provide a good base to work from and the editor is just as simple to use with this form kind.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me to a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new choices under form types Now around:
Considering paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this level of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can play the styling options to get it Matched up with your own branding.
Finally, you can choose the near Behaviour of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
This is really where most email Marketing platforms will leave you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click info, Subscriber growth, automation analytics, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you special coverage for this campaign.
This is where you’ll discover a few statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average user…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into individual areas of the report for a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so It’s possible to see how your readers interacted with your emails in relation to another.
Reports for automations are also Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, even though I found to be less enlightening than effort reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will find the available statistics more than enough to fulfill their demands.
What’s email marketing with no dashboard of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The good news? If you have ever used a visual workflow builder, You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and simple to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for every email advertising software.
After setting your trigger, you can begin adding steps to your workflow.
These steps could be anything from sending an email, including a Postpone, a conditional split, or an act, such as transferring a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I set together, where readers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within seven days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional components. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s currently no automation for moving Readers directly into a different automation.
That being said, the Majority of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into various groups that trigger new automation workflows. It’s simply not as efficient…. yet.
Another question of efficiency here is when generating new mails In the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email block to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your topic line which appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the critique.
This time, however, once you’ve created your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending options.
Finally, your email will be Loaded into your own automation.
A Wonderful touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation block, which means you can get an idea of what it contains at a glimpse.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it’s really much faster than what I’m utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, you will likely find this a downgrade in functionality.
It is quick enough for me, Personally, however I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there is one type of automation You will not find in MailerLite, and that I think it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or measure ) based on the way Subscribers interact with all the webpages on your website.
This Sort of behavioral targeting just isn’t accessible MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Umbraco Email Marketing
The cost of MailerLite is among the tools biggest Selling things, and let us face it, we all love a good deal.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All features (including premium) for up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding on your mails using this program, it is still an wonderful option for those starting out.
And what about the premium programs?
It turns out, at approximately half of the Price of the competition on average, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the cheapest options available on the industry. Plus, if you’re willing to pay yearly, you are also able to get an even better discount.
In fact, I have not been able to find anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among the very few marketing tools to interrupt The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of decades, which is no easy feat.
While it is not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking about giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you In the comments. Umbraco Email Marketing
