We’ll discuss all these features in depth below, but first, let us look in pricing.
Getresponse’s attribute set is arguably one of the most comprehensive out there.
Not only does this provide all of the crucial stuff you would expect from an email advertising platform – list templates, hosting, autoresponders, analytics and so on, but as mentioned above, it has been expanding the attribute set to the point where it’s morphing into an all-in-one / CRM-style marketing platform.
The question is whether Getresponse is a jack of all trades and master of none – let’s drill down to the crucial features to find out.
Up until very recently Getresponse support was one of the most comprehensive available for email marketing tools: the company offered phone service together with live chat support, email service and various online tutorials / resources.
Regrettably, the telephone support has been discontinued. Instead you’ll have to use live chat (24/7) or email support. To be fair, many similar e-marketing platform providers only offer both of these stations – if phone support is a deal-breaker for you then you may want to consider Aweber, which nonetheless supplies it (you can read our Aweber review here).
In terms of the caliber of Getresponse support, I’ve not had to use it quite often (a good thing) but when I have I’ve found it to be a bit of a mixed bag (less of a good thing). Some of the live chat support I’ve received was outstanding, and I haven’t had to wait too much time to talk to a broker; the email support less so.

Additionally, you will find tons of templates to choose from — around 500 — and they are presented in easy-to-understand classes, therefore it is generally pretty straightforward to find a good starting point for a template and edit it until you’re delighted with the design.
If you are really unhappy with the templates provided by Getresponse, there’s also the option of buying a template by a third party provider such as Theme Forest.
Another thing worth pointing out regarding Getresponse’s templates is that the range of RSS-to-email software options are not very extensive (just 11 templates are supplied – well short of the 700+ accessible for routine newsletters!) And some of them played a bit for me when I tested them (2010). Autoresponders are e-newsletters that are delivered to your subscribers at intervals determined by you personally — you can put them up so that immediately after someone signals up to your mailing list, they receive a welcome message in the company; a week later they can get a discount offer for a number of your products or services; 3 weeks later they could obtain an encouragement to accompany you on social media. Landing page Builder
Online advertising campaigns which use landing pages will usually generate far more leads in the event, instead of simply directing individuals to some (cluttered!) Site, they point users to attractive’squeeze pages’ comprising clear info and a tidy, well-designed data capture type.

Also, and very importantly, you can not utilize the landing page A/B testing performance on the least expensive Getresponse program (where the machine shows a sample of your customers different versions of your landing page, computes conversion rates, and finally rolls out the best performing landing page automatically).
If you’re serious about landing pages – and they’re unquestionably a helpful attribute – then it is definitely worth looking at one of the more expensive Getresponse plans.
You can purchase the Landing Pages feature as an add-on for an extra $15 per month, but very frustratingly, although the add-on allows you to display an infinite amount of landing pages to prospective subscribers, it doesn’t include A/B testing.
Therefore, if I had been interested in the Getresponse landing page functionality, I wouldn’t bother with this fairly half-baked add-on: I would just go for a few of the more expensive plans (which I suppose is what Getresponse want you to do) .
Getresponse was ahead of its competitors for quite a while with its responsive email layout performance, which automatically corrects your e-newsletter’s template so that when an individual is reading it onto a mobile device, the design and fonts will be optimized for the device in question.
Most competing products have caught up on this today, and extend responsive email templates, but Getresponse is far better than many similar products when it comes to displaying a responsive record of your e-newsletter – you simply hit on a’mobile preview’ button to get an instant snapshot of what your email looks like on a smartphone (see picture right).

Customer Relationship Management
One of the most frustrating facets of utilizing many famous CRM tools is that the necessity to export information to CSV and back to your email marketing instrument in order to perform mailouts (or the necessity to export data from your email marketing tool into your CRM to add leads to it).
When I saw Getresponse lately introducing a brand new CRM feature in their plans I was intrigued – this could possibly eliminate all that data exporting and importing, and keep everything neatly in one place.

The CRM is currently integrated with all Getresponse’s email marketing operation and you can add users to a CRM pipeline according to their activity (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or activate autoresponders based on the addition of a new contact into a pipeline stage.
An example of how you could use this functionality is as follows:
You can add a contact to a specific stage on a sales pipeline based on the page of your website that they finished a form on;
you can then send them a automated email tailored to that pipeline period a few days later;
and based on the action they took with regard to this email (clicking on a particular link etc) you can automatically move them onto another stage of the pipeline and automatically invite them into a webinar.
It’s very smart stuff, and I can’t think of any email marketing product offering this kind of tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. For this type of functionality you normally must look at dedicated — and more expensive — CRM products like Salesforce and Infusionsoft.
But, it is not all good news on the CRM front — there are some big things missing from Getresponse’s CRM attribute set.
The most glaring omission is email activity monitoring. Other CRM packages allow you to bcc a dropbox email address any time you send an email to some lead or customer; doing so keeps a list of the communication from the contact’s history. There is now no method of doing this with the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an easy way to send one-to-one emails to leads or clients.
And strangely, when you click a contact within a bargain pipeline, you can not see their contact activity — i.e., the activities they’ve taken (open, clicks etc.) in regards to previous communications which you have sent to your leads are not displayed. To see this, you need to go from the CRM section of Getresponse, search for your contact in the contacts section and then click on their details. But guess what? Doing this doesn’t display their history.
Task management is non-existent too: Unlike committed CRM tools, there is no way to assign tasks to other group members.
Finally, adding contacts to your pipeline stage is tough. You need to add contacts to a list , then go to the CRM pipeline, include a bargain and hunt your lists for the contact you just added. From a usability point of view this is extremely clunky and time consuming. You should just be able to add a deal directly to a pipeline and then enter the contact details of your guide or client at that point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is a bit half-baked. But that said, it’s a new feature and the stuff it can do on the automation side is remarkable. I’m optimistic that this feature gets developed over time because done right, it’s possibly a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the ability to sponsor webinars on the platform.
Given that webinars are generally used as a lead-generation strategy, the idea of having your email database along with your webinar tool under precisely the same roof is extremely appealing.
The pricing is also very aggressive also compared to established webinar solutions. The email deliverability rate – the percentage of e-newsletters delivered that successfully reach inboxes – is obviously a very important point to check at when selecting an email marketing tool.
Not all email advertising providers are that forthright in their deliverability prices; but Getresponse seems reasonably open about that, with this to say about it on their own website:

I really do have to pull Getresponse on one thing relating to deliverability however: to ensure a high deliverability speed, it is a good idea to use a platform named DKIM email authentication. You can use DKIM with Getresponse – but just on the more expensive Getresponse’Max’ plans.
Though I’ve not encountered any deliverability difficulties using the less costly plans, competing goods do not force you to invest in a more expensive strategy to avail of this feature — it would be good to see Getresponse becoming more generous here.
There are two methods you can use to add subscribers to a mailing list: having a’single opt-in’ or even a’double opt-in’ process.
If you utilize a single opt-in process, the individual registering to your own mailing list is added to your mailing list the minute they hit the submit button on your sign up form.
With a double opt-in process, the individual registering to your record is sent an email containing a confirmation link that s/he have to click before being subscribed.
The main benefit of a single opt-in process is that it makes it really simple for users to subscribe to a mailing list; additionally, it generally increases conversion rate and so the amount of subscribers on your list. On the whole, Getresponse is pretty straightforward to use. It is certainly easy enough to do all of the basics: import contacts, create campaigns, setup autoresponders and check numbers and the interface is pretty intuitive and clean.
In terms of how it stacks up against its competitors in this respect, I would assert that Campaign Monitor is a tiny bit more user friendly, and Mailchimp includes a slicker user interface (though one which makes finding certain functionality a bit tricky at times).
One place I think that could be significantly better in the user-friendliness point of view is that the Getresponse e-newsletter editor.
Whilst its drag-and-drop strategy does in theory provide a very flexible way to make blocks of articles and transfer them about an e-newsletter, in practice it is quite clunky to use and can lead to accidental deletion of content, or positioning of it in the incorrect portion of the e-newsletter.
If you can get your head about it, and practice using it a bit, it will result in a useful instrument – it’s only that the implementation of it could be rather better.
Also, as described above, the CRM tool might be far better from a usability point of view — adding contacts to deals could be difficult.
The 30-day free trial which Getresponse supplies is completely operational and the free trial isn’t contingent upon supplying credit card details.
This makes it possible to avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for this particular trial and today I am getting charged for a commodity that I do not use” scenario.
The only down side to the free trial is that it limits the number of readers you can send to 1000. It would be good if this could be raised a bit, as it might help potential users try out the tool in more’real world’ scenarios.

Pricing Vs Competitors
Provided that you are happy to use one of the entry-level’Email’ plans, the pay-per-month Getresponse programs are on the whole more affordable than those supplied by many of its key competitors, especially if you have a fairly large number of email addresses on your database.
For instance, if you have a mailing list containing between 9,000 and 10,000 documents that you wish to send an unlimited number of mails each month to, then you’ll discover that hosting it with Getresponse prices $65 monthly.

Decision Campaign Monitor’s pricing structure depends not only the number of email addresses on your own database but on how many emails you send per month also. If you are happy to set a limit on the amount of mails delivered via Campaign Monitor (from the example above, to 50k mails ), you can expect to pay a monthly fee of $89, still substantially higher than Getresponse’s.
The sole well-known service I could think of that comes in considerably more affordable is Mad Mimi, which charges $42 a month to host up to 10,000 email addresses (note however that the functionality offered by Mad Mimi is nowhere near as broad as Getresponse’s or indeed the other products mentioned above).
Additionally, it is worth pointing out that Mailchimp offers narrower pricing bands, meaning that depending on how big your list, it might sometimes be a slightly cheaper option than Getresponse.
In the database end of things, Getresponse’s pricing is pretty competitive too – you can sponsor a database containing 1,000 email addresses for $15 per month using Getresponse, compared to $29 with Aweber; $59 on Campaign Monitor (infinite send).
Mailchimp’s monthly fee for a 1,000 record database is the same as Getresponse’s; and Mad Mimi provides a marginally more affordable, if much less functional offering for $12 a month.
Two final things to be Conscious of about the pricing :
Some competing suppliers — especially Mailchimp – provide completely free accounts for users that have a few records (but these do not offer the full assortment of features that you get on a paid plan).
As stated earlier, if you are prepared to pay upfront for 1 or 2 decades, you can avail of substantial discounts that the other competitors do not yet supply.

Getresponse represents one of the more cost-effective ways to host and communicate with an email database.
It’s also one of the most intriguing products of its kind – because it provides email marketing, landing pages, CRM and webinars all under a single roof. It’s hard to consider any rival product that offers this’all around’ proposition, and it’s what proceeds to persuade us to utilize it for Style Factory’s email marketing.
Some improvements to Getresponse do need to be made however, especially where the email programmer is concerned – its drag and drop interface is much more fiddly and not as responsive than it should be. A good deal of improvements can be made into the data capture types too, especially for users wishing to exhibit them on mobile devices.
And from what I gather from reader feedback, there are developments that could be made into the service offering.
All in all though I rate Getresponse very highly – you get substantial bang for your buck with this product.

It transmits responsive emails and allows you to preview smartphone versions of your e-newsletters very easily.
It includes a helpful landing page creator – but keep in mind you need to be on a more expensive plan to get the fully operational version of this.
You are able to test out all of its features free for 30 days without needing to input credit card details.
Disadvantages of Getresponse
The drag and drop interface for designing mails can be a little bit on the fiddly side.
The information capture forms provided are not responsive and you can not control when and where they’re displayed on your site.
