Recently however, Getresponse’s feature set has evolved quite a bit, to the point at which it is getting more of an’all-in-one’ marketing solution.
Besides email advertising, it now also provides webinar hosting, landing pages, and a few CRM (customer relationship management) functionality.
We’ll discuss all these attributes in depth below, but first, let’s look in pricing.
Getresponse’s feature set is arguably among the most comprehensive on the market.
Not only does it provide all the key stuff you would expect from an email marketing platform – record hosting, templates, autoresponders, analytics and so forth, but as mentioned above, it’s recently been expanding the attribute set to the point where it is morphing into an all-in-one / CRM-style advertising and marketing platform.
The question is whether Getresponse is a jack of all trades and master of none – let us drill down to the crucial features to find out.
Up until very recently Getresponse service was one of the most comprehensive available for email advertising tools: the firm offered phone service alongside live chat support, email support and various online tutorials / resources.
Sadly, the phone support has been discontinued. Instead you are going to need to use live chat (24/7) or email service. To be fair, most similar e-marketing platform providers only offer you both of these stations – if telephone service is a deal-breaker for you you may want to consider Aweber, which nonetheless supplies it (you can read our Aweber review ).
In terms of the caliber of Getresponse support, I’ve not had to use it very often (a good thing) but once I’ve I have found it for a bit of a mixed bag (less of a good thing). Some of the live chat support I have received was excellent, and I haven’t needed to wait too long to chat with an agent; the email support less so.
Some of the feedback I’ve got from our readers does suggest that there do have to be improvements made in terms of the caliber of service Getresponse offer. As with a number of these types of companies, I expect it often boils down to who you get on the day. Standalone Email Marketing Software
Getresponse offers some very comprehensive reporting and analytics options. You get all the basics of track – open rate, click-through, unsubscribe Prices and so forth – but in addition to that there are some very nifty features Which Are worth a particular mention, specifically:
‘one-click segmentation’: the choice to identify people who did not participate with an e-newsletter you shipped and set them in a section of readers that you can then email again using another version of the e-newsletter
‘metrics over time’: you can find out exactly when a lot of your subscribers do it on your mails, and period your future mailouts based on this information
’email ROI’: by adding some tracking code to your post-sales page on your site, you can find out how efficiently (or not!) Your email campaigns are driving sales, and work out your return on investment in electronic mail marketing.
Per-user info – you can click on one of your subscribers and see in which they signed from, where they’re found and which emails they’ve opened previously.
Mailchimp and Aweber offer some similar reporting functionality (particularly around sales tracking) however Getresponse’s reporting tool is decidedly one of most fully featured out there (it certainly trounces the stats options provided by Mad Mimi and Campaign Monitor).
So far so good with Getresponse, but when it comes to templates, Getresponse arguably falls down a bit.
Regrettably, the templates supplied out of the box seem somewhat dated; they aren’t as attractive as those provided by Mailchimp or Campaign Monitor (and that I slightly prefer Aweber’s offering here too).
On the other hand, the templates are extremely tweakable – you can alter fonts, designs and imagery easily enough using the controls provided; and naturally there’s nothing to stop you simply designing your own HTML email template and minding the code for it.
Additionally, you will find a lot of templates to choose from — around 500 — and they’re introduced in easy-to-understand classes, so it is generally pretty simple to find a good beginning point for a template and then edit it before you’re happy with the design.
If you’re really not pleased with the templates offered by Getresponse, there is also the option of purchasing a template from a third party provider such as Theme Forest.
Another thing worth pointing out regarding Getresponse’s templates is that the range of RSS-to-email applications options are not very extensive (only 11 templates are supplied – well short of their 700+ available for regular newsletters!) And some of them played up a bit for me when I tested them in Outlook (2010). I eventually found something that worked for me, but I think there are definitely a few improvements that could be created in this region. Standalone Email Marketing Software
Autoresponders are e-newsletters which are sent to your subscribers at intervals determined by you — you can set them up so that immediately after somebody signs up to a mailing list, they receive a welcome message from the business; a week after they could receive a discount deal for a number of your goods or services; 3 months after they could obtain an encouragement to accompany you on social networking. And so Forth.
Getresponse’s autoresponder functionality is an integral selling point – it provides one of the most comprehensive feature sets available.
You can send time-based or action-based messages; time-based options include cycles such as the example above, and action-based messages can be triggered by user actions or advice, for example:
subscriptions to certain lists
changes in contact tastes
completed transactions / goals
changes in user information
Recently Getresponse launched a brand new version of the new autoresponder functionality, called’Marketing Automation.’
This permits you to create automation workflows with a drag and drop builder – you essentially set up an’automation flowchart’ that educates Getresponse what to do when a user opens a particular deal, clicks on a certain link .
This kind of performance goes far beyond what has traditionally been available from autoresponders, and lets you create an individual journey that may be customised to the nth level.

Landing page Builder
Online advertising campaigns which make use of landing pages will usually create far more leads in the event, instead of simply directing individuals to some (cluttered!) Site, they tip users to attractive’squeeze pages’ containing clear information and a clean, well-designed data capture type.

However, unless you’re on a Getresponse’Guru’,’Max’ or’Enterprise’ program, the Getresponse landing page performance is fairly limited: you can just produce one landing page, that can only be displayed 1,000 times per month.
Additionally, and above all, you can’t use the landing page A/B testing functionality on the cheapest Getresponse program (where the machine indicates a sample of your users different versions of your landing page, computes conversion rates, and ultimately rolls out the top performing landing page mechanically ).
If you are serious about landing pages – and they are certainly a useful feature – then it’s definitely worth considering among the more expensive Getresponse plans.
You can purchase the Landing Pages attribute as an add-on to get an extra $15 per month, but very frustratingly, although the add-on permits you to display an unlimited number of landing pages to potential subscribers, it doesn’t include A/B testing.
Therefore, if I was interested in the Getresponse landing page functionality, I wouldn’t bother with this rather half-baked add-on: I would just go for a few of the pricier programs (which I guess is exactly what Getresponse want one to do) .
Getresponse was before its competitors for quite a while with its responsive email design performance, which automatically corrects your e-newsletter’s template so that if a user is reading it on a mobile device, the layout and fonts will be automatically optimised for the device in question.
Most competing products have caught up on this now, and offer responsive email templates, but Getresponse is better than most similar goods as soon as it comes to displaying a responsive preview of your e-newsletter – you simply hit on a’cellphone preview’ button for an instant snapshot of what your email resembles on a smartphone (see picture right).
Not only this but you can’flip’ the smartphone preview around, so that you may preview what your own email looks like when the screen is employed in either portrait or landscape mode. Standalone Email Marketing Software
Customer Relationship Management
One of the most frustrating aspects of utilizing many famous CRM tools is that the need to export information to CSV and straight back into your email marketing instrument as a way to perform mailouts (or the necessity to export data from the email marketing tool in your CRM to add prospects to it).
So when I saw Getresponse lately introducing a brand new CRM attribute into their plans I was intrigued – this could potentially do away with all that data exporting and exporting, and keep everything neatly in 1 area.

But recently Getresponse have upped their video game somewhat on this front. The CRM is now integrated with all of Getresponse’s email marketing operation and you can add users into a CRM pipeline according to their action (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or trigger autoresponders based on the addition of a new contact to a pipeline stage.
An example of how you could use this operation is as follows:
You can add a contact to a specific point on a revenue pipeline depending on the page of your site that they completed a form on;
you can then send a automated email tailored to that pipeline stage a couple of days afterwards;
and based on the actions they took with regard to this email (clicking on a particular link ) you can automatically move them on another phase of the pipeline and invite invite them to a webinar.
It is very clever stuff, and I can not think of any email marketing product offering such a tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. For this type of performance you normally need to look at committed — and more expensive — CRM products like Salesforce and Infusionsoft.
But, it’s not all good news on the CRM front there are some big things missing out of Getresponse’s CRM attribute set.
The most glaring omission is e mail activity tracking. Other CRM packages allow you to bcc a dropbox email address whenever you send an email to a lead or customer; doing this keeps a record of the communication from the contact’s history. There is currently no method of doing so together with the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an easy way to send one-to-one emails to leads or clients.
And oddly, if you click on a contact within a deal pipeline, you can not see their contact action — i.e., the activities they’ve taken (open, clicks etc.) with regard to previous communications that you have sent to your prospects are not displayed. To see this, you have to go out of the CRM part of Getresponse, search for your own contact in the contacts section and then click in their details. But guess what? Doing so doesn’t exhibit their history.
Task management is non-existent too: unlike dedicated CRM tools, there is no way to assign tasks to other group members.
Finally, adding contacts into a pipeline stage is difficult. You need to add contacts to a list , then visit the CRM pipeline, add a deal and hunt your lists for the contact you just added. From a usability point of view this is extremely clunky and time consuming. You should just have the ability to put in a deal directly to a pipeline and input the contact details of your guide or client at that point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is somewhat half-baked. But that said, it’s a new feature and the stuff it could perform on the automation side is remarkable. I’m optimistic that this feature gets developed over time because done right, it is potentially a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the ability to sponsor webinars on the platform.
Given that webinars are usually used as a lead-generation strategy, the idea of getting your email database along with your webinar tool under precisely the exact same roof is extremely appealing.
The pricing is also very competitive also by comparison to established webinar solutions. Ultimately webinar functionality is potentially an extremely helpful feature to have sitting on your e-marketing arsenal and its addition as a feature gives Getresponse a very significant advantage over its key competitors, particularly when you consider you could connect it in with a built-in CRM tool (more on this in a moment). The email deliverability rate – the percentage of e-newsletters sent that successfully hit inboxes – is obviously an important point to look at when selecting an email marketing instrument.
Not all email advertising providers are that forthright in their deliverability prices; but Getresponse seems reasonably open about this, with this to say about it in their own website:
At GetResponse we’re frequently asked about the quality of the deliverability rate. Since deliverability depends on many things, including the content of your messages, the deliverability rate could vary for every mailing. For all our clients collectively, however, we are proud to say our overall deliverability rate now stands at 99%.
Obviously you are going to need to take the company’s word for this, but supposing it is true, it’s a fantastic rate and inspires confidence that the vast majority of emails that you send using Getresponse will reach their intended recipients.
Furthermore, Getresponse really gives you the deliverability rate of each message on your email analytics – that is something that I haven’t struck on rival goods’ metrics. A thumbs up for it.
I do need to pull Getresponse on one thing concerning deliverability nevertheless: to guarantee a high deliverability rate, it’s a good idea to use a platform called DKIM email authentication. You can use DKIM using Getresponse – but just on the more expensive Getresponse’Max’ plans.
Though I’ve not encountered any deliverability difficulties using the cheaper plans, competing goods don’t make you invest in a more expensive plan to avail of this feature — it’d be useful to see Getresponse being more generous here.
There are two approaches you can use to add subscribers to a mailing list: having a’only opt-in’ or even a’double click’ process.
If you use use a single opt-in process, the person registering to your mailing list is added to a mailing list the minute they hit the submit button on your sign up form.
Using a double opt-in procedure, the individual registering to your record is sent via an email containing a confirmation link that s/he must click before being subscribed.
The main benefit of a single opt-in process is that it makes it very easy for users to subscribe to your mailing list; it also generally increases conversion rate and therefore the amount of readers on your list. A dual opt-in procedure is better for verifying the folks subscribing to your list are using real email addresses and leads to cleaner data and more accurate stats (because open rates etc. ) are calculated based on a list containing only email addresses).
The good news is that Getresponse permits you to make use of either opt-in approach – this is not the case with all competing goods. So a thumbs up for Getresponse to be flexible on this.
You are probably thinking that this sounds quite good — but to tell the truth, I think there’s a lot of room for improvement with respect to Getresponse kind templates.

Overall, Getresponse is really straightforward to use. It’s certainly easy enough to do all the basics: import contacts, create campaigns, set up autoresponders and check numbers and the interface is really intuitive and clean.
With regards to how it stacks up against its competitors in this respect, I would assert that Campaign Monitor is a little bit more user friendly, and Mailchimp includes a slicker user interface (though one which makes locating certain performance just a bit tricky at times).
1 area I think that might be significantly better in the user-friendliness standpoint is the Getresponse e-newsletter editor.
Whilst its drag-and-drop approach does in theory provide a very flexible approach to make blocks of articles and transfer them around an e-newsletter, in practice it is quite clunky to use and may cause accidental deletion of content, or positioning of it in the incorrect portion of the e-newsletter.
If you’re able to get your head around it, and practice using it a bit, it does result in a useful tool – it is just that the execution of it could be somewhat better.
Also, as described above, the CRM instrument could be better from a usability point of view — adding contacts to deals could be difficult.
The 30-day complimentary trial that Getresponse supplies is fully operational and the free trial is not contingent upon supplying credit card information.
This helps you avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for that trial and today I’m getting charged for a product that I don’t use” scenario.
The only down side to the free trial is that it restricts the amount of subscribers you can send to 1000. It would be useful if that could be raised a bit, as it might help prospective users try out the tool in more’real world’ situations.

There are a number of differences between the’Email’,’Pro’ and’Max’ plans but for me the main ones are:

Webinars – this performance isn’t available at all around the’Email’ plan and the number of webinar attendees is restricted for the’Pro’ and’Max’ programs at 100, 500 respectively (it’s unclear what the limit is about the’Enterprise’ plan).
Users – you can only have one user account on the’Email’ program; by contrast you get 3 on’Pro’, 5 ‘Max’ and 10 on’Enterprise’.
Pricing Vs Competitors
So long as you’re happy to use one of the entry-level’Email’ plans, the pay-per-month Getresponse plans are on the whole more affordable than those supplied by many of its key competitors, particularly in case you have a reasonably high number of email addresses onto your database.
By way of example, if you’ve got a mailing list comprising between 9,000 and 10,000 documents that you wish to send an infinite number of mails per month to, you’ll find that hosting it using Getresponse costs $65 monthly.

Decision Campaign Monitor’s pricing structure depends not only the amount of email addresses in your own database but on the number of emails you send a month also. If you are delighted to limit the amount of mails delivered via Campaign Monitor (in the case above, to 50k mails ), you can expect to pay a monthly fee of $89, nevertheless considerably higher than Getresponse’s.
The only well-known service I can think of that comes in significantly more affordable is Mad Mimi, which charges $42 a month to host up to 10,000 email addresses (note however that the performance offered by Mad Mimi is nowhere near as extensive as Getresponse’s or indeed the other products mentioned previously ).
Additionally, it is worth pointing out that Mailchimp offers thinner pricing bands, meaning that depending on the size of your list, it may occasionally be a slightly cheaper option than Getresponse.
In the database end of things, Getresponse’s pricing is pretty competitive too – you can host a database comprising 1,000 email addresses for $15 per month with Getresponse, compared to $29 with Aweber; $59 on Campaign Monitor (infinite send).
Mailchimp’s monthly fee for a 1,000 recording database is exactly the same as Getresponse’s; and Mad Mimi provides a slightly more affordable, if less operational offering for $12 a month.
Two final things to be aware of about the pricing :
Some competing suppliers — notably Mailchimp – offer completely free accounts for users with a small number of records (but these do not offer the entire range of features that you get on a paid plan).
As stated before, if you’re prepared to pay upfront for 1 or 2 decades, you can avail of significant discounts that the other competitors don’t yet supply.
So the most important thing is that Getresponse is fairly competitive in the pricing section. But what about features? Standalone Email Marketing Software
Getresponse represents among the more cost-effective tactics to host and communicate with an email database.
It’s also among the most intriguing products of its type – because it provides email marketing, landing pages, CRM and webinars all under one roof. It is difficult to think of any rival product that offers this’all around’ proposition, and it is what continues to convince us to utilize it for Style Factory’s email advertising.
Some improvements to Getresponse do have to be made however, especially where the email designer is concerned – its drag and drop interface is much more fiddly and not as responsive than it should be. A good deal of improvements can be made to the data capture forms too, especially for consumers wanting to display them on mobile devices.
And from what I gather from reader feedback, there are improvements which could be made into the support offering.
All in all though I rate Getresponse very tremendously – you receive substantial bang for your dollar with this item.

Getresponse is transparent regarding deliverability rates, publishing characters on its own website and providing deliverability statistics for person e-newsletters that you send.
It provides an extremely flexible approach to information segmentation – more elastic than many competing products.
It permits you to add subscribers to your mailing list on both a single-opt in and also a double opt-in basis.
It sends responsive emails and allows you to preview smartphone versions of your e-newsletters very readily.
It comes with a helpful landing page founder – but keep in mind you have to be on a more expensive strategy to get the fully operational version of this.
