Getresponse’s feature set is arguably one of the most comprehensive on the market.
Not only does it provide all of the crucial stuff you would expect from an email advertising platform – record templates, hosting, autoresponders, analytics and so forth, but as mentioned above, it has recently been expanding the attribute set to the point where it’s morphing into an all-in-one / CRM-style marketing platform.
The question is whether Getresponse is a jack of all trades and master of none – let us drill down to the key qualities to find out.
Up until quite recently Getresponse service was amongst the most comprehensive available for email advertising tools: the firm offered phone support together with live chat support, email service and various online tutorials / resources.
Regrettably, the phone support has now been discontinued. Instead you’ll need to use live chat (24/7) or email support. To be fair, most similar e-marketing platform providers only offer these two channels – if telephone support is a deal-breaker for you then you may wish to consider Aweber, which still supplies it (you can read our Aweber review ).
In terms of the caliber of Getresponse service, I have not had to use it very often (a good thing) but once I have I’ve discovered it for a small mixed bag (less of a good thing). Some of those live chat support I have received was outstanding, and I haven’t needed to wait too much time to talk to a broker; the email support .
Some of the feedback I have from our readers will indicate that there do have to be improvements made concerning the quality of support Getresponse offer. As with a lot of these kinds of companies, I expect it boils down to who you get daily. Software Email Marketing Open Source
Getresponse offers some very comprehensive reporting and analytics choices. You get all the basics of course – open speed, click-through, unsubscribe rates and so on – but also to that there are some very nifty features that are worth a particular mention, specifically:

On the plus side, the templates are extremely tweakable – you can alter fonts, designs and vision easily enough using the controls provided; and of course there’s nothing to prevent you simply designing your HTML email template and minding the code for it.
Additionally, there are a lot of templates to choose from — around 500 — and they are introduced in easy-to-understand classes, therefore it’s generally pretty straightforward to find a good starting point for a template and edit it until you’re delighted with the plan.
If you’re really not pleased with the templates offered by Getresponse, there’s also the choice of buying a template by a third party supplier such as Theme Forest.
Another thing worth pointing out regarding Getresponse’s templates is the assortment of RSS-to-email software options are not very extensive (just 11 templates are supplied – well short of the 700+ available for routine newsletters!) And a few of them played a bit for me when I tested them in Outlook (2010). Landing page Builder

Additionally, and very importantly, you can not use the landing page A/B testing functionality on the least expensive Getresponse plan (whereby the system indicates a sample of your customers different variations of your landing page, calculates conversion speeds, and finally rolls out the top performing landing page mechanically ).
If you’re serious about landing pages – and they’re certainly a helpful feature – then it’s definitely worth looking at among the more expensive Getresponse plans.
You may purchase the Landing Pages attribute as an add-on for an extra $15 per month, however quite frustratingly, even though the add-on allows you to show an unlimited amount of landing pages to prospective subscribers, it does not consist of A/B testing.
Therefore, if I had been interested in the Getresponse landing page performance, I would not bother with this rather half-baked add-on: I would just go for a few of the pricier programs (which I suppose is exactly what Getresponse would like one to do) .

Customer Relationship Management
Among the most frustrating aspects of utilizing many famous CRM tools is the need to export information to CSV and back to your email marketing instrument as a way to do mailouts (or the necessity to export data from your email marketing tool into your CRM to add leads to it).
When I watched Getresponse lately introducing a new CRM feature in their plans I was intrigued – that could possibly eliminate all that info exporting and importing, and keep everything neatly in one area.
Initially I wasn’t that impressed with the Getresponse CRM tool since you could only use it to perform quite basic tasks: you could create sales pipelines, add contacts to them and track activity (emails, telephone calls etc.) with those contacts manually.
But lately Getresponse have upped their game somewhat on this particular front. The CRM is now integrated with all of Getresponse’s email marketing functionality and you can add users into a CRM pipeline according to their action (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or activate autoresponders based on the accession of a new contact to a pipeline stage.
An example of how you could use this functionality is as follows:
You can add a contact to a particular stage on a sales pipeline based on the page of your website that they finished a form ;
you can then send them a automated email tailored to this pipeline stage a few days later;
and dependent on the action they took in regards to that email (clicking on a certain link etc) you could automatically move them on another stage of the pipeline and automatically invite them to a webinar.
It’s very clever stuff, and that I can’t think of any similar email advertising product offering this kind of tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. For this kind of performance you normally need to appear at dedicated — and more expensive — CRM products like Salesforce and Infusionsoft.
But, it is not all fantastic news about the CRM front — there are a few big things missing out of Getresponse’s CRM attribute set.
The most glaring omission is email activity monitoring. Additional CRM packages allow you to bcc a dropbox email address whenever you send an email to some lead or client; doing this keeps a list of this communication from the contact’s history. There’s currently no method of doing so with the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an simple way to send one-to-one mails to leads or clients.
And oddly, if you click a contact in a deal pipeline, you can’t see their contact action — i.e., the activities they have taken (open, clicks etc.) with regard to previous communications that you have delivered to your prospects aren’t displayed. To observe this, you have to go from the CRM section of Getresponse, search for your contact in the contacts section and then click on their details. But guess what? Doing so doesn’t display their history.
Task management is non-existent also: Unlike dedicated CRM tools, there is no way to assign tasks to other group members.
Eventually, adding contacts to a pipeline stage is difficult. You need to add contacts to a list first, then go to the CRM pipeline, include a bargain and hunt your lists to receive the contact you just added. From a usability standpoint this is very clunky and time consuming. You should just be able to add a deal directly to a pipeline and input the contact details of your guide or client at that point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is a bit half-baked. However, it’s a new feature and the stuff it could do on the automation aspect is remarkable. I’m hopeful that this attribute becomes developed over time since done right, it is potentially a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the ability to sponsor webinars on the platform.
Given that webinars are usually used as a lead-generation tactic, the idea of having your email database along with your webinar tool under the exact same roof is very appealing.
The pricing is also very competitive too compared to based webinar solutions. By way of instance, among the leading webinar providers, Gotowebinar, fees $199 per month to host webinars with as much as 500 attendees; you can really do the same (and a whole lot more) with Getresponse for $165 (so long as your list size is below 25,000).

Ultimately webinar functionality is potentially a very useful feature to have sitting in your e-marketing arsenal and its inclusion as a characteristic gives Getresponse a very significant advantage over its key competitors, especially when you consider you could link it in with a built-in CRM tool (more about that in a minute ). The email deliverability rate – the percentage of e-newsletters sent that successfully hit inboxes – is always a very important thing to look at when selecting an email marketing instrument.
Not all email advertising providers are that forthright in their deliverability rates; however, Getresponse seems pretty open about this, with this to say about it in their own site:
At GetResponse we’re often asked about the quality of our deliverability rate. Since deliverability is dependent upon many things, including the content of your messages, the deliverability rate may vary for each mailing. For our customers collectively, however, we are proud to say our overall deliverability rate currently stands at 99%.
Obviously you are going to have to choose the organization’s word for this, but assuming it’s true, it’s a good rate and inspires confidence that the vast majority of emails that you send using Getresponse will reach their intended recipients.
What’s more, Getresponse actually gives you the deliverability rate of every message in your email analytics – this is something that I have not encountered on rival goods’ metrics. A thumbs up for it.
I do have to pull Getresponse up on something concerning deliverability however: to ensure a high deliverability speed, it is a good idea to use a platform named DKIM email authentication. You can use DKIM with Getresponse – but just on the costlier Getresponse’Max’ programs.
Though I’ve not struck any deliverability problems utilizing the less costly plans, competing goods don’t force you to invest in a more expensive strategy to avail of the feature — it would be useful to see Getresponse becoming more generous here.
There are two methods you can employ to add subscribers to a mailing list: using a’single opt-in’ or a’double opt-in’ process.
If you utilize a single opt-in process, the individual registering to your mailing list is added to your mailing list the moment they hit the submit button on your sign up form.
With a double opt-in procedure, the person registering to your record is sent via an email containing a confirmation link that s/he have to click before being subscribed.
The most important advantage of a single sampling procedure is that it makes it very easy for users to subscribe to your mailing list; additionally, it generally increases conversion rate and therefore the number of subscribers on your record. Overall, Getresponse is pretty straightforward to use. It’s certainly easy enough to do all of the basics: import contacts, create campaigns, setup autoresponders and check numbers and the interface is really clean and intuitive.
In terms of how it stacks up against its rivals in this regard, I’d argue that Campaign Monitor is a tiny bit more user friendly, and Mailchimp includes a slicker user interface (though one which makes finding certain performance just a little bit tricky at times).
One place I feel that might be significantly better from a user-friendliness point of view is that the Getresponse e-newsletter editor.
Whilst its drag-and-drop approach does in theory provide a very flexible way to make blocks of content and move them around an e-newsletter, in practice it’s quite clunky to use and may lead to accidental deletion of content, or placement of it at the wrong part of the e-newsletter.
If you’re able to get your head about it, and practice using it a bit, it will make for a useful instrument – it’s just that the execution of it could be rather better.
Also, as explained above, the CRM instrument could be better from a usability point of view adding contacts to deals could be unnecessarily difficult.
The 30-day free trial which Getresponse supplies is fully operational and the free trial isn’t contingent upon providing credit card details.
This makes it possible to avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for that trial and now I’m getting charged for a product I don’t use” scenario.
The only down side to the free trial is that it restricts the amount of readers you can send to to 1000. It would be useful if that could be increased a little, as it would help potential users try out the tool in more’real world’ situations.

Mailchimp’s monthly fee for a 1,000 recording database will be the like Getresponse’s; and Mad Mimi provides a marginally cheaper, if less functional offering for $12 per month.
Two final things to be aware of on the pricing :
Some competing providers — notably Mailchimp – provide free account for users that have a few records (but these don’t supply the entire assortment of features that you get on a paid program ).
As stated earlier, if you are prepared to pay upfront for 1 or two decades, you can avail of substantial discounts the other competitors don’t yet provide.

Getresponse represents one of the more cost-effective ways to host and speak using an email .
It’s also among the most interesting products of its type – in that it provides email marketing, landing pages, CRM and webinars all under one roof. It’s difficult to think of any rival product that offers this’all round’ proposition, and it is what proceeds to persuade us to use it for Style Factory’s email advertising.
Some improvements to Getresponse do have to be made nonetheless, particularly where the email programmer is concerned – its drag and drop interface is more fiddly and less responsive than it should be. A lot of improvements could be made to the data capture forms also, especially for consumers wishing to exhibit them on mobile devices.
And from what I gather from reader feedback, there are developments that could be made to the service offering.
Overall though I speed Getresponse very highly – you get substantial bang for your dollar with this product.
