Like most online businesses now, email marketing continues to be Dominated by the same large players for the previous decade. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the marketplace, causing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So now, in this review, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to find out if it really stands its ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the change.

Like most email advertising providers these days, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the software.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, website, Business, address, business size, list size and also the kind of content you plan to send.
Then, You Have to confirm your Website (or domain ).
This is still part of this acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is related to this domain so they could email you a confirmation link.
Once you’ve completed these Steps, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Site, and determine whether you are a good fit for their services.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to use the software to create campaigns and play with the attributes, but you won’t have the ability to send anything before approved.

The next tab is for classes, and despite the difference in name, These act much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but finally decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are updated manually or through an Automation principle — that we will get to in a moment — and they don’t have any value besides what you call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand At which Segments and Groups are typically used, however, MailerLite delivers a hand in case you’re unsure:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple contributors together based on a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. Besides, they’re optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their particular fields, such as name, business, and nation.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your subscribers along with Your custom field information in distinct columns… or can easily add these fields to a types which will only apply to future readers.

I won’t go too much to the form Things here because I have an entire section on that below, but this is the strategy I would recommend if you wanted to use this attribute.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field information from fresh Subscribers, you are able to pull them in to your email content and subject line.

Again, while the template selection Isn’t winning any awards, but it does offer a fantastic base to work from if, for example the majority of us, you do not have that pure eye for layout.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, however They ultimately do the same task; collect an email address.

Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there is a lot to cover here.
Let us begin with your Bog-standard embedded type.

Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and form signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you special reporting for this effort.
This is where you’ll find a few more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into individual areas of the report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so It’s possible to see your readers interacted with your emails in relation to another.
Reports for automations will also be Available under the’Automations’ tab, even though I found these to be less enlightening than effort reports.

What is email marketing without a dash of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this review.
The good news? If you have ever used a visual workflow builder, then You will instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and easy to navigate — something that certainly can not be said for each and every email marketing software.
After setting your trigger, you can begin adding steps to your workflow.
These steps could be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a conditional split, or an act, like moving a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I set together, where readers Are unsubscribed when they do not open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite should have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.. )
For Instance, there’s currently no automation for transferring Subscribers directly into a different automation.
That being said, most of these actions can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into various classes that activate new automation workflows. It is just not as efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when generating new mails In the automation workflow builder.
After having an email cube to The workflow, you’ll be asked to add your subject line that then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the review.
This time, however, once you’ve created your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you straight back into the automations workflow instead of the usual sending options.
Finally, your email will probably be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation block, which means you can get an idea about what it contains at a glance.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on paper, it’s actually much faster than what I am utilized to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, you will likely find that this downgrade in functionality.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s 1 Kind of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on the way Subscribers interact with the webpages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting only is not available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you may want to skip this one. Sensor Pro
The cost of MailerLite is one of the tools largest Selling points, and let’s face it, we all love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) for up to 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding in your mails using this plan, it’s still an amazing option for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium plans?
It ends up, at approximately half the Price of this competition on average, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the least expensive options on the industry. Plus, if you’re willing to pay annually, you can also get a much better discount.
In fact, I have not been able to locate anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among those few marketing tools The (very crowded) industry in recent decades, which is no easy feat.
While it’s not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
