If I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what would you say? Sendblaster
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online industries now, email marketing has been Dominated by the identical large players for the previous ten years. Which means they get encouraged very deeply and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So now, in this short article, I’ll be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it really stands its ground against the big boys…

Like most email advertising providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the software.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your company name, site, Industry, address, business size, record size and also the type of content you intend to send.
Then, you need to verify your Site (or domain name).
This is still part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is related to that domain in order that they can email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed those Measures, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Site, and ascertain whether you are a good match for their service.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to use the software to create campaigns and play with the features, but you won’t be able to send anything until accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
But while these steps aren’t perfect for getting started, it Does help prevent malicious users from damaging everyone else’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to handle The majority of your email marketing.
(We will get to automations soon, do not worry.)
But whether it’s a new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always some excuse to send a more immediate email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Create Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, such as subject line, from title and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t start your broadcast email, together with the choice of altering the subject line and email content.
– RSS effort: Produce a recurring campaign That sends new content to subscribers using your site’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few additional choices, the Majority of these will follow Exactly the same step-by-step process of a standard effort.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your effort, you’ll be asked to Pick a favorite editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can change to the Templates tab and choose from one of the pre-designed email templates — that will move you to the dragn’ drop editor .
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to choose From which is a little on the low side, but the layouts are super modern.
And, of course, if you’d just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I will choose the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Making customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the cubes in the sidebar to add distinct Kinds of content to your email, such as videos, merchandise columns, and societal links.
After making your adjustments, just click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ options where you can select your classes or sections.
The advanced tab also allows one To build segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, right before sending, then you’ll get into the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, if that’s instantly, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Sendblaster
Handling Your Subscribers
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably among The most essential aspects of any email advertising program today.
Because highly personalized campaigns Are Essential if You’re searching to increase clicks, opens, and, most importantly, your own conversions.
And while many providers Permit You to”label” subscribers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different approach.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially principles.
Your readers belong to a section only when they meet the Specified principles, and will be automatically added or removed accordingly.
Here is what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can also combine Rules, in addition to an alternate rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for classes, and despite the difference in name, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but finally decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or via an Automation rule — which we’ll get into in a minute — and they don’t have any value aside from what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this stage, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, but MailerLite delivers a hand in case you’re unsure:
Basically, groups are more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments permit you to lump multiple subscribers collectively according to a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it’s a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. Besides, they are optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their own fields, such as title, business, and nation.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers together with Your custom field data in distinct columns… or can easily add these fields to a types which will only apply to future readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added to a form:
I won’t go too much to the shape Stuff here because I have an entire section on that below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field information from new Readers, you can pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I am barely scratching the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it is important to know that this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it’s fair to state MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on stage. Sendblaster
If you’re not impressed with what you have seen so far, then maybe The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you’ll be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Is not winning any awards, it will offer a great base to work from if, like most people, you do not have that natural eye for layout.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all finally do the same task; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further construct or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and it is already better than some dedicated alternatives *Infection * WPBakery.
Along with the basic building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all 3 kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite really Provides a Decent set of type building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there is a lot to cover here.
Let’s begin with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then place on your website to show it on specific pages.
Despite beginning super fundamental, the form designer lets you To personalize everything in the kind style, subjects, background, title, enter fields and, of course, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which gives you a Opportunity To envision your own backup in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there’s more to some form than simply its physical appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure how the Form works, such as adding extra fields and setting a custom success page.
(There’s a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And talking of the success page…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, That will replace the embedded kind and prevents users from redirecting.
Last but surely not least, you Can assess how your form screens on mobile by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes , but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an Summary of the Embedded form but as I said before, you can also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this installation Procedure is identical, there are A few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth selection, they do provide a good base to work from and the editor is just as simple to use with this form type.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template requires me to a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new options under form types This time around:
Considering paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to observe this amount of control over popup forms.
And, as before, you can perform the styling options to get it Matched up with your branding.
Last, you can choose the close Behaviour of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
That is where most email Marketing platforms will leave you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Statistics in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click info, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and form signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you specific coverage for that campaign.
This is where you’ll discover some more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into different areas of the report to get a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see how your readers interacted with your emails compared to another.
Reports for automations are also Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, though I found these to be less insightful than effort reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will get the available statistics more than enough to fulfill their demands.
What’s email marketing with no dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this review.
The great news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, then You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and simple to navigate — something which certainly can not be said for every email marketing program.
After setting your trigger, you can begin adding measures to your workflow.
These measures could be anything from sending an email, adding a Delay, a bubble break, or an act, such as moving a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I put together, where readers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite should have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.. )
For Instance, there’s now no automation for transferring Readers directly into a different automation.
That being said, the Majority of these actions can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into various classes that activate new automation workflows. It’s simply much less effective…. yet.
Another question of efficiency here is when generating new mails In the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your topic line which then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the critique.
This time, however, as Soon as You’ve established your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending options.
Ultimately, your email will be Loaded into your automation.
A Wonderful touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, so you can find an concept of what it contains at a glance.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on newspaper, it is really much faster than what I’m used to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you’ll likely find that this downgrade in performance.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, however I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s 1 Kind of automation You will not find in MailerLite, also I think that it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or step) based on how Readers interact with the webpages on your site.
This Sort of behavioral targeting just isn’t available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or intend to use, you may want to skip this one. Sendblaster
The Price of MailerLite is no doubt among those tools biggest Selling things, and let us face it, most of us love a good deal.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All features (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your emails using this plan, it is still an amazing option for anyone starting out.
And what about the top plans?
It ends up, at around half of the Cost of this competition generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the cheapest options on the industry. Additionally, if you’re willing to pay annually, you are also able to get an even better discount.
In Reality, I have not been able to find anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among those very few marketing tools The (very crowded) sector in the last couple of years, and that’s no simple feat.
While it’s not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking of giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you In the remarks. Sendblaster
