On the plus side, the templates are extremely tweakable – you can change fonts, layouts and vision easily enough with all the controls provided; and of course there is nothing to prevent you simply designing your HTML email template and importing the code for this.
Furthermore, there are tons of templates to choose from — over 500 — and they’re presented in easy-to-understand classes, therefore it is generally pretty simple to find a good beginning point to get a template and then edit it until you’re delighted with the design.
If you are really not pleased with the templates provided by Getresponse, there is also the option of purchasing a template by a third party supplier such as Theme Forest.
Another thing worth pointing out regarding Getresponse’s templates is the range of RSS-to-email software options are not so extensive (only 11 templates are provided – well short of their 700+ available for routine newsletters!) And some of them played up a bit for me when I tested them (2010). Autoresponders are e-newsletters which are sent to your subscribers at intervals determined by you — you can put them up so that instantly after someone signals up to a mailing list, they get a welcome message from your business; a week later they can get a discount offer for some of your goods or services; 3 months after they could receive an invitation to follow you on social networking. Getresponse’s autoresponder functionality is an integral selling point – it offers one of the most extensive feature sets available.
You can send either time-based or action-based messages; time-based options include cycles like the example above, and also action-based messages can be triggered by user actions or information, for example:
contributors to certain lists
changes in contact preferences
completed trades / goals
changes in user information
Lately Getresponse launched a new version of their new autoresponder functionality, called’Marketing Automation.’
This permits you to create automation workflows with a drag and drop builder – you basically install an’automation flowchart’ that educates Getresponse what to do if a user opens a specific deal, clicks on a specific link etc..
This kind of functionality goes far beyond what’s traditionally been available from autoresponders, and allows you to create an individual travel which can be customised to the nth level.

It’s important to note, however, that these more advanced marketing automation features are only available to the pricier programs – the’Guru’ program and upward. Responses Email
Landing page Builder
Online advertising campaigns that use landing pages will typically generate far more leads if, rather than simply directing people to some (cluttered!) Site, they tip users to appealing’squeeze pages’ comprising clear info and a clean, well-designed data capture form.
Getresponse provides something very useful in this regard that the majority of its competitors do not: a landing page creator (and one that is mobile-friendly to boot).
Products such as Campaign Monitor and Aweber require you to use a third party (and non invasive ) landing page creating tool like Unbounce or Instapage; Mailchimp lately introduced a landing page functionality but it is yet to become as sophisticated at Getresponse’s.
However, unless you are on a Getresponse’Guru’,’Max’ or’Enterprise’ plan, the Getresponse landing page performance is rather limited: you can just create 1 landing page, that can simply be displayed 1,000 times a month.
Also, and above all, you can not utilize the landing page A/B testing functionality on the least expensive Getresponse plan (whereby the system shows a sample of your customers different variations of your landing page, computes conversion speeds, and ultimately rolls out the top performing landing page mechanically ).
If you are serious about landing pages – and they are unquestionably a helpful attribute – then it’s definitely worth looking at among the more expensive Getresponse plans.
You can buy the Landing Pages feature as an add-on for an additional $15 per month, but very frustratingly, although the add-on allows you to display an infinite amount of landing pages to prospective subscribers, it does not include A/B testing.
Therefore, if I was interested in the Getresponse landing page performance, I wouldn’t bother with this rather half-baked add-on: I’d just go for a few of the more expensive programs (which I guess is exactly what Getresponse would like you to do!) .
Getresponse was ahead of its competitors for quite some time with its responsive email layout functionality, which automatically adjusts your e-newsletter’s template so that when an individual is reading it on a mobile device, the design and fonts will be automatically optimised for the device in question.
Most competing products have captured up on this now, and offer responsive email templates, but Getresponse is better than most similar products when it comes to displaying a responsive record of your e-newsletter – you just hit on a’cellphone preview’ button to get an instant snapshot of your email resembles on a smartphone (see image right).
Not only that but you can’flip’ the smartphone trailer around, so that you may preview what your email looks like when the display is employed in either portrait or landscape style. Responses Email
Customer Relationship Management
Among the most frustrating aspects of using many famous CRM tools is the necessity to export information to CSV and straight back into your email marketing tool as a way to do mailouts (or the necessity to export data from your email marketing tool in your CRM to include prospects to it).
When I saw Getresponse recently introducing a new CRM attribute in their plans I was intrigued – that could potentially eliminate all that data exporting and importing, and keep everything neatly in one place.
Initially I wasn’t that impressed with all the Getresponse CRM tool since you can only use it to perform quite basic tasks: you can create sales pipelines, add contacts to them and monitor activity (mails, phone calls etc.) with those contacts manually.
But recently Getresponse have upped their game somewhat on this front. The CRM is now integrated with all of Getresponse’s email marketing operation and you can add users into a CRM pipeline according to their action (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or trigger autoresponders depending on the accession of a new contact to a pipeline stage.
An example of how to use this functionality is as follows:
You can add a contact to a particular stage on a revenue pipeline based on the page of your site they finished a form on;
you could then send them a automated email tailored to this pipeline period a couple of days afterwards;
and dependent on the action they took in regards to this email (clicking on a particular link ) you can automatically move them on another stage of the pipeline and invite invite them into a webinar.
It is very smart stuff, and that I can’t think of any email marketing product offering this kind of tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. For this type of performance you normally need to appear at dedicated — and more costly — CRM products like Salesforce and Infusionsoft.
But, it is not all good news about the CRM front — there are some big things missing from Getresponse’s CRM feature set.
The most glaring omission is e mail activity monitoring. Additional CRM packages allow you to bcc a dropbox email address whenever you send an email to a lead or customer; doing so keeps a record of this communication in the contact’s history. There’s now no method of doing this together with all the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an simple way to send one-to-one emails to prospects or clients.
And oddly, if you click on a contact within a bargain pipeline, you can not see their contact action — i.e., the actions they’ve taken (open, clicks etc.) in regards to previous communications which you’ve delivered to your leads aren’t displayed. To observe this, you have to go out of the CRM part of Getresponse, hunt for your contact in the contacts section and then click on their details. But guess what? Doing so does not display their deal history.
Task management is non-existent too: Unlike dedicated CRM tools, there is no way to assign tasks to other team members.
Finally, adding contacts to a pipeline stage is tough. You need to add contacts to a list first, then visit the CRM pipeline, include a bargain and hunt your lists to receive the contact you just added. From a usability point of view this is extremely clunky and time consuming. You should just be able to put in a bargain right to a pipeline and then enter the contact details of your guide or client at that point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is a bit half-baked. However, it is a new attribute and the things it could do on the automation side is remarkable. I’m hopeful that this attribute becomes developed over time because done right, it is possibly a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the capability to sponsor webinars on the platform.
Given that webinars are usually used as a lead-generation tactic, the notion of having your email database and your webinar tool under the same roof is extremely appealing.
The pricing is also very competitive too compared to based webinar solutions. For example, one of the leading webinar providers, Gotowebinar, charges $199 a month to sponsor webinars with as much as 500 attendees; you can really do the same (plus a great deal more) with Getresponse for $165 (as long as your list size is below 25,000).
With respect to attendee limitations, the Getresponse’Pro’ plan permits you to host a webinar with up to 100 participants; the’Max’ plan’s limit is 500.
You might also purchase webinars functionality as an add-on to a cheaper plan: $40 a month buys you a 100 attendees limit, $99 a month buys you a 500 attendees restrict. It’s not clear what your options are if you need to host larger scale webinars compared to that however.

Ultimately webinar performance is potentially a very useful feature to have sitting on your e-marketing arsenal and its addition as a feature provides Getresponse a very significant advantage over its key rivals, particularly when you consider you could link it in using a built in CRM tool (more about that in a moment). The email deliverability rate – the percentage of e-newsletters delivered that successfully hit inboxes – is obviously an important point to check at when selecting an email marketing tool.
Not all email advertising providers are that forthright about their deliverability prices; but Getresponse seems reasonably open about this, with this to say about it on their website:
At GetResponse we are frequently asked about the quality of our deliverability rate. Since deliverability is dependent upon a number of factors, including the content of your messages, the deliverability rate could vary for every mailing. For all our clients collectively, however, we’re pleased to say our overall deliverability rate now stands at 99%.
Clearly you’re going to have to take the organization’s term for this, but supposing it is accurate, it’s a good speed and inspires confidence that the vast majority of emails you send using Getresponse will achieve their receivers.
What’s more, Getresponse actually provides you the deliverability rate of every message on your email analytics – this is something that I have not struck on rival products’ metrics. A thumbs up for it.
I do have to pull Getresponse on something relating to deliverability however: to guarantee a high deliverability speed, it is advisable to use a platform named DKIM email authentication. You can use DKIM using Getresponse – but just on the costlier Getresponse’Max’ plans.
Although I’ve not struck any deliverability difficulties using the cheaper plans, competing products do not make you invest in a more expensive strategy to avail of the feature — it would be good to see Getresponse being more generous here.
There are two approaches you can employ to add subscribers to a mailing list: using a’single opt-in’ or even a’double opt-in’ process.
If you use use one opt-in process, the individual registering to your own mailing list is added to your mailing list the minute they hit the submit button on your sign up form.
With a double opt-in procedure, the person registering to your record is sent an email containing a confirmation link that s/he must click before being subscribed.
The most important benefit of a single opt-in process is that it makes it really simple for users to subscribe to your mailing list; additionally, it generally increases conversion speed and so the number of subscribers on your list. A dual opt-in procedure is better for verifying that the folks subscribing to a list are using actual email addresses and leads to cleaner information and more precise stats (because receptive rates etc. ) are calculated based on a list comprising only email addresses).

One place I feel that could be significantly better from a user-friendliness point of view is the Getresponse e-newsletter editor.
Whilst its drag-and-drop strategy does in theory provide a very flexible way to make blocks of content and transfer them around an e-newsletter, in practice it is fairly user friendly to use and may cause accidental deletion of content, or positioning of it in the wrong part of the e-newsletter.
If you can get your head around it, and practice using it a bit, it will make for a useful tool – it’s just that the execution of it might be somewhat better.
Additionally, as explained above, the CRM tool could be better from a usability point of view adding contacts to deals can be difficult.
The 30-day free trial that Getresponse provides is completely functional and the free trial is not contingent upon supplying credit card details.
This helps you avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for this particular trial and now I’m getting charged for a product I don’t use” scenario.
The only down side to the free trial is that it limits the amount of subscribers it is possible to send to 1000. It would be useful if this could be increased a bit, as it might help potential users try out the tool in more’real world’ scenarios.

If you’re happy to limit the amount of mails delivered via Campaign Monitor (in the case above, to 50k mails ), you can expect to pay a monthly fee of $89, nevertheless considerably higher than Getresponse’s.
The only well-known service that I could think of that comes in considerably more affordable is Mad Mimi, which costs $42 a month to sponsor up to 10,000 email addresses (note however that the functionality offered by Mad Mimi is nowhere near as broad as Getresponse’s or indeed the other products mentioned above).
It’s also worth pointing out that Mailchimp offers thinner pricing rings, meaning that depending on the size of your listing, it might occasionally be a slightly cheaper alternative than Getresponse.
In the database end of things, Getresponse’s pricing is pretty competitive too – you can sponsor a database containing 1,000 email addresses for $15 a month with Getresponse, compared to $29 with Aweber; $59 on Campaign Monitor (infinite send).
Mailchimp’s monthly fee for a 1,000 recording database will be the like Getresponse’s; and Mad Mimi supplies a marginally more affordable, if much less operational offering for $12 a month.
Two final things to be aware of about the pricing :
Some competing providers — notably Mailchimp – provide completely free account for users with a few records (but these don’t offer the entire range of features that you get on a paid plan).
As mentioned before, if you’re ready to pay upfront for 1 or 2 years, you can avail of substantial discounts the other competitors do not yet provide.
So the bottom line is that Getresponse is pretty competitive in the pricing section. However, what about attributes? Responses Email
Getresponse represents one of the more cost-effective tactics to host and communicate using an email .
It is also one of the most intriguing products of its type – because it provides email marketing, landing pages, CRM and webinars all under one roof. It’s hard to think of any competing product that offers this’all round’ proposal, and it is what continues to persuade us to utilize it to Style Factory’s email marketing.
Some improvements to Getresponse do need to be made however, especially where the email programmer is concerned – its drag and drop interface is more fiddly and not as responsive than it ought to be. A lot of improvements could be made to the data capture types also, particularly for consumers wanting to display them on mobile devices.
And from what I gather from reader feedback, there are improvements which could be made into the service offering.
Overall though I rate Getresponse very tremendously – you get substantial bang for your buck with this item.

It transmits responsive emails and allows you to preview smartphone versions of your e-newsletters very readily.
It comes with a helpful landing page founder – but keep in mind that you need to be on a more expensive strategy to get the fully operational version of this.
You can try all its features free for 30 days without needing to input credit card information.
Disadvantages of Getresponse
The drag and drop interface for designing mails may be a little bit on the fiddly side.
The data capture forms supplied are not responsive and you can not control when and in which they’re displayed on your site.
CRM performance needs to be improved substantially before it could be considered a substitute for a standalone CRM product.
There’s a limited range of RSS-to-HTML e-newsletter templates provided.
You can only use’web-safe’ fonts from e-newsletters, which can make the templates look slightly less slick than those provided by competing products.
The pricing structure is a little confusing, with customers having to cover something of a superior to access the landing page creator tool.
The free trial restricts the number of subscribers you can send messages to to 1000.
