Up until quite recently Getresponse service was one of the most comprehensive available for email advertising tools: the firm offered phone service together with live chat support, email service and assorted online tutorials / resources.
Regrettably, the phone service has now been discontinued. Instead you’ll need to use live chat (24/7) or email support. To be fair, most similar e-marketing platform suppliers only offer you these two stations – if telephone support is a deal-breaker for you then you may want to contemplate Aweber, which nonetheless provides it (you can read our Aweber review ).
In terms of the quality of Getresponse service, I have never needed to use it quite often (a fantastic thing) but once I’ve I’ve discovered it to be a small mixed bag (less of a fantastic thing). Some of those live chat support I have received has been outstanding, and I have not had to wait too much time to chat with a broker; the email support less so.

If you are really unhappy with the templates offered by Getresponse, there’s also the option of purchasing a template from a third party supplier such as Theme Forest.
Another thing worth pointing out seeing Getresponse’s templates is that the range of RSS-to-email applications options are not so extensive (only 11 templates are provided – well short of the 700+ available for regular newsletters!) And a few of them played up a bit for me when I tested them (2010). Autoresponders are e-newsletters which are sent to your readers at intervals determined by you — you can put them up so that immediately after somebody signals up to your mailing list, they get a welcome message in your company; a week after they could get a discount deal for some of your products or services; 3 weeks after they could receive an invitation to accompany you on social media. This kind of functionality goes way beyond what’s traditionally been available from autoresponders, and lets you create a user travel that may be customised to the nth level.

Landing page Builder

Additionally, and above all, you can not use the landing page A/B testing functionality on the cheapest Getresponse program (where the machine indicates a sample of your customers different variations of your landing page, calculates conversion rates, and ultimately rolls out the top performing landing page automatically).
If you’re serious about landing pages – plus they are certainly a helpful attribute – then it’s definitely worth looking at among the more expensive Getresponse plans.
You may purchase the Landing Pages feature as an add-on to get an additional $15 a month, but quite frustratingly, even though the add-on permits you to display an unlimited amount of landing pages to prospective subscribers, it doesn’t include A/B testing.
Therefore, if I was considering the Getresponse landing page performance, I would not bother with this rather half-baked add-on: I’d just go for one of the more expensive plans (which I suppose is exactly what Getresponse want one to do) .
Getresponse was before its competitors for quite a while using its responsive email design performance, which automatically corrects your e-newsletter’s template so that if an individual is reading it onto a mobile device, the layout and fonts will be automatically optimised for the device in question.
Most competing products have caught up on this now, and extend responsive email templates, but Getresponse is better than most similar goods when it comes to displaying a responsive record of your e-newsletter – you simply hit on a’cellphone preview’ button for a quick snapshot of your email looks like on a smartphone (see picture right).

Customer Relationship Management
One of the most frustrating aspects of using many well-known CRM tools is the necessity to export information to CSV and back to your email marketing instrument in order to do mailouts (or the need to export info from the email marketing tool into your CRM to add leads to it).
So when I saw Getresponse lately introducing a brand new CRM attribute into their plans I had been intrigued – that could possibly do away with all that info exporting and importing, and keep everything neatly in one area.
Initially I was not that impressed with the Getresponse CRM tool since you could only use it to perform quite basic tasks: you can create sales pipelines, add contacts to these and track activity (emails, telephone calls etc.) with those contacts manually.
But recently Getresponse have upped their video game a bit on this particular front. The CRM is now integrated with all Getresponse’s email marketing operation and you can add users to a CRM pipeline based on their action (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or activate autoresponders depending on the addition of a new contact to a pipeline phase.
An example of how you could use this functionality is as follows:
You can add a contact to a particular point on a revenue pipeline based on the page of your site they completed a form ;
you can then send them a automated email tailored to this pipeline stage a couple of days afterwards;
and based on the actions they took in regards to this email (clicking on a particular link ) you can automatically move them on another phase of the pipeline and automatically invite them to a webinar.
It’s very smart stuff, and I can’t think of any email advertising product offering this kind of tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. For this kind of performance you normally need to look at committed — and more expensive — CRM products such as Salesforce and Infusionsoft.
However, it’s not all good news on the CRM front — there are some big things missing from Getresponse’s CRM attribute collection.
The most glaring omission is e mail activity tracking. Other CRM packages allow you to bcc a dropbox email address whenever you send an email to a lead or client; doing this keeps a record of this communication in the contact’s history. There’s now no method of doing so with the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an easy way to send one-to-one emails to prospects or clients.
And oddly, if you click a contact within a deal pipeline, you can not see their contact activity — i.e., the activities they’ve taken (open, clicks etc.) in regards to previous communications that you’ve delivered to your leads aren’t displayed. To observe this, you have to go out of the CRM section of Getresponse, hunt for your own contact in the contacts section and then click on their details. But guess what? Doing so does not exhibit their deal history.
Task management is non-existent too: unlike committed CRM tools, there is no way to assign tasks to other group members.
Finally, adding contacts to your pipeline stage is tough. You have to add contacts to a list first, then visit the CRM pipeline, add a bargain and hunt your lists to receive the contact you just added. From a usability point of view this is extremely clunky and time consuming. You should just be able to add a bargain right to a pipeline and then input the contact information of your lead or client at that point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is a bit half-baked. However, it is a new feature and the stuff it could perform on the automation aspect is impressive. I am hopeful that this feature gets developed over time because done right, it is potentially a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the ability to host webinars on the platform.
Given that webinars are generally used as a lead-generation strategy, the idea of having your email database and your webinar tool under the same roof is extremely attractive.
The pricing is also very aggressive also by comparison to established webinar solutions. For instance, one of the leading webinar providers, Gotowebinar, charges $199 per month to sponsor webinars with as much as 500 attendees; you can actually do the same (and a whole lot more) with Getresponse for $165 (so long as your list size is under 25,000).
With respect to attendee limitations, the Getresponse’Pro’ program permits you to sponsor a webinar with up to 100 participants; the’Max’ program’s limit is 500.
You can even purchase webinars functionality as a add on to a cheaper plan: $40 per month buys you a 100 attendees limitation, $99 a month buys you a 500 attendees restrict. It’s not clear what your choices are if you need to host bigger scale distributions compared to that however.

The email deliverability rate – the percentage of e-newsletters sent that successfully reach inboxes – is obviously an important thing to check at when choosing an email marketing instrument.

Obviously you are going to need to take the company’s term for this, but assuming it is accurate, it is a good speed and inspires confidence that the vast majority of emails that you send using Getresponse will reach their intended recipients.
What’s more, Getresponse really gives you the deliverability rate of every message on your email analytics – this is something I have not encountered on competing goods’ metrics. A thumbs up for this.
I really do have to pull Getresponse on one thing concerning deliverability nevertheless: to guarantee a high deliverability speed, it is advisable to use a platform called DKIM email authentication. You can use DKIM using Getresponse – but just on the costlier Getresponse’Max’ programs.
Though I have not struck any deliverability problems utilizing the cheaper plans, competing goods don’t make you invest in a more expensive strategy to avail of the feature — it’d be useful to see Getresponse being more generous here.

You are probably thinking that all this sounds pretty good — but to tell the truth, I think there is a great deal of room for advancement with regard to Getresponse kind templates.
To begin with, they are not responsive (i.e.they won’t resize themselves automatically to match the device they’re being viewed on).

With regards to how it stacks up against its competitors in this respect, I’d assert that Campaign Monitor is a tiny bit more user friendly, and Mailchimp has a slicker user interface (although one that makes finding certain performance just a bit tricky at times).
One place I feel that could be significantly better in the user-friendliness standpoint is the Getresponse e-newsletter editor.
Whilst its drag-and-drop approach does in theory provide an extremely flexible way to create blocks of content and move them around an e-newsletter, in practice it is fairly user friendly to use and may cause accidental deletion of content, or placement of it in the incorrect portion of the e-newsletter.
If you can get your head about it, and practice using it a bit, it does make for a useful instrument – it is only that the implementation of it could be rather better.
Additionally, as described above, the CRM instrument might be better from a usability point of view — adding contacts to deals could be difficult.
The 30-day complimentary trial that Getresponse supplies is completely operational and the free trial is not contingent upon supplying credit card details.
This helps you avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for this particular trial and now I am getting charged for a product I don’t use” scenario.
The only down side to this free trial is that it limits the amount of readers you can send to to 1000. It would be good if this could be increased a little, as it would help prospective users try the tool out in more’real-world’ scenarios.

Provided that you are happy to use one of those entry-level’Email’ plans, the pay-per-month Getresponse plans are on the whole more affordable than those provided by many of its key competitors, particularly if you have a reasonably high number of email addresses on your own database.
For instance, if you have a mailing list comprising between 9,000 and 10,000 records that you want to send an infinite number of emails per month to, then you might find that hosting it using Getresponse prices $65 per month.

* Campaign Monitor’s pricing structure is dependent not only the amount of email addresses on your database but on the number of emails you send per month too. If you are delighted to limit the number of mails delivered via Campaign Monitor (from the case above, to 50k emails), you can expect to pay a monthly charge of $89, still considerably greater than Getresponse’s.
The sole well-known service that I can think of that comes from considerably cheaper is Mad Mimi, which costs $42 a month to sponsor up to 10,000 email addresses (note however that the performance provided by Mad Mimi is nowhere near as broad as Getresponse’s or indeed another products mentioned previously ).
It’s also worth pointing out that Mailchimp offers thinner pricing bands, meaning that depending on how big your listing, it may sometimes be a slightly cheaper alternative than Getresponse.
At the database end of things, Getresponse’s pricing is really competitive too – you can sponsor a database comprising 1,000 email addresses for $15 a month using Getresponse, compared to $29 with Aweber; $59 on Campaign Monitor (unlimited send).
Mailchimp’s monthly fee for a 1,000 record database will be the like Getresponse’s; and Mad Mimi supplies a slightly more affordable, if less functional offering for $12 a month.
Two final things to be aware of on the pricing :
Some competing suppliers — notably Mailchimp – provide completely free accounts for users with a small number of records (but these do not supply the full range of features that you get on a paid plan).
As mentioned earlier, if you are prepared to pay upfront for 1 or two decades, you can avail of significant discounts the other competitors don’t yet supply.

It’s also among the most interesting products of its kind – in that it provides email marketing, landing pages, CRM and webinars all under a single roof. It’s difficult to consider any rival product that delivers this’all round’ proposition, and it is what proceeds to persuade us to use it for Style Factory’s email advertising.
Some developments to Getresponse do have to be made however, particularly where the email programmer is concerned – its drag and drop interface is more fiddly and less responsive than it ought to be. A lot of improvements could be made into the data capture types too, particularly for users wanting to exhibit them on mobile devices.
