Intro Podio Email Marketing
When I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what would you say? Podio Email Marketing
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries now, email advertising has been Dominated by the same large players for the previous ten years. Which means they get encouraged very deeply and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the marketplace, inducing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So today, in this short article, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to find out whether it really stands its ground against the big boys…

Like most email advertising providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information like your organization name, website, Industry, address, business size, record size and also the type of material you intend to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Site (or domain ).
This is still part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is associated to that domain in order that they could email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Steps, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Site, and determine whether you are a good fit for their service.
(In other words, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll still be Able to use the software to make campaigns and perform with the attributes, but you won’t have the ability to send anything before accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
But while these measures aren’t perfect for getting started, it Does help stop malicious users from hurting everybody’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to Deal with The majority of your email marketing.
(We’ll get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But whether it is a brand new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always a reason to send a more instant email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Create Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular effort: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, including subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to subscribers who Don’t open your broadcast email, together with the option of changing the subject line and email content.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to subscribers using your site’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few additional options, the Majority of these will follow The same step-by-step procedure of a standard campaign.
So let’s walk you through it.
Once you click to create your effort, you’ll be asked to Pick a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can change to the Templates tab and select from among the pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor by default.
At the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to select From which is somewhat on the low side, but the designs are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you’d just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to use, Making customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the cubes in the sidebar to include different Kinds of articles to your email, such as videos, merchandise columns, and social links.
After making your adjustments, simply click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be carried to the recipients’ choices where you are able to choose your classes or sections.
The advanced tab also allows you To build segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting isn’t quite perfect.
Finally, right before sending, you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, whether that is instantly, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Podio Email Marketing
Managing Your Subscribers
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most important facets of any email advertising program today.
Because highly personalized efforts are necessary if You are looking to increase clicks, opens, and, above all, your own conversions.
And while most providers allow you to”label” subscribers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different approach.
When you open up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially rules.
Your readers belong to a section only when they meet the Specified rules, and will be automatically inserted or removed so.
Here is what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice how you can even combine Principles, in addition to an alternate rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and despite the difference in title, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are updated manually or through an Automation principle — that we will get into in a moment — and they have no value aside from what you call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, but MailerLite offers a hand in case you’re unsure:
Basically, groups are much more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments permit you to lump multiple contributors together according to a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. In any case, they’re optional.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their particular areas, such as name, company, and country.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers along with Your custom field data in separate columns… or may simply add these fields to a types which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added to a form:
I won’t go too much into the form Things here since I have a whole section on this below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wanted to use this attribute.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field data from fresh Readers, you are able to pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I am barely scraping the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you know that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it is fair to say MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on point. Podio Email Marketing
If you are not impressed by what you’ve seen up to Now, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, you will be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, it will offer a great foundation to work from if, like most of us, you don’t have that pure eye for layout.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, though They finally do the same job; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further build or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is better than some dedicated solutions *Infection * WPBakery.
Along with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero segments, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it will not be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all three kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Decent pair of form building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there is a whole lot to cover .
Let us begin with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then place on your website to display it on specific pages.
Despite beginning super basic, the form designer allows you To personalize everything in the form style, fields, background, name, enter fields and, of course, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which gives you a chance To visualize your copy in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there’s more to a form than just its appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure the way the Form works, such as adding extra fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is even a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded form and prevents users from redirecting.
Last but surely not least, you Can check the way your form displays on cellular by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes , but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that is an overview of this Embedded form but like I said before, you can also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of this setup Procedure is identical, you will find A few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth selection, they do provide a good foundation to work from and the editor is just as easy to use for this form type.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me to a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new choices under form types This time around:
Considering paid programs such as Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can play the styling options to get it Matched up with your branding.
Finally, you can Select the near Behavior of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text option, or have .
This is where most email Marketing platforms will render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click info, Subscriber growth, automation analytics, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you special reporting for this campaign.
This is where you’ll discover a few more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying surroundings, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into individual areas of this report to get a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also shows a click map, so It’s possible to see your subscribers interacted to another.
Reports for automations will also be Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, even though I found to be less insightful than effort reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will find the available statistics more than sufficient to meet their needs.
What’s email marketing without a dash of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this particular review.
The great news? If you have used a visual workflow builder, You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and easy to navigate — something which certainly can not be said for each and every email marketing software.
After establishing your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These steps could be anything from sending an email, adding a Delay, a bubble break, or an action, such as transferring a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I put together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within seven days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite ought to not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.. )
For Instance, there’s now no automation for moving Subscribers directly into a different automation.
That being said, most of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different classes that activate new automation workflows. It’s simply much less efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when creating new mails In the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email cube to The workflow, you’ll be asked to add your subject line which appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the review.
This time, but once you’ve established your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending options.
Ultimately, your email will probably be Loaded into your own automation.
A Wonderful touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation block, so it’s possible to get an concept of what it contains at a glimpse.
While this process may seem like A grind on newspaper, it is actually much quicker than what I am used to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you’ll probably find this a downgrade in performance.
It is quick enough for me, Personally, but I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there is one type of automation You will not find in MailerLite, also I think that it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or step) based on how Readers interact with all the pages on your website.
This Sort of behavioral targeting only isn’t accessible MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you may want to skip this one. Podio Email Marketing
The Price of MailerLite is no doubt one of those tools biggest Selling points, and let us face it, we all love a good bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All features (including premium) for up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding on your mails using this plan, it is still an wonderful alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium programs?
It turns out, at approximately half the Price of this rivalry on average, MailerLite is by far among the least expensive options on the market. Plus, if you’re willing to pay annually, you are also able to get an even better discount.
In fact, I haven’t been able to find anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among those few advertising tools The (very crowded) sector in the last couple of years, which is no easy feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you will seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking about giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you From the remarks. Podio Email Marketing
