Lately however, Getresponse’s attribute set has developed quite a bit, to the point where it’s becoming more of an’all-in-one’ marketing alternative.

Getresponse’s feature set is arguably one of the most comprehensive out there.
Not only does this provide all the key stuff you’d expect from an email advertising platform – list templates, hosting, autoresponders, analytics and so forth, but as mentioned above, it has been expanding the attribute set to the point where it’s morphing into an all-in-one / CRM-style advertising and marketing platform.
The question is whether Getresponse is a jack of all trades and master of not – let us drill down to the key qualities to learn.
Up until very recently Getresponse support was amongst the most comprehensive available for email advertising tools: the company offered phone support alongside live chat support, email service and various online tutorials / resources.
Sadly, the phone service has been discontinued. Instead you’ll need to use live chat (24/7) or email service. To be fair, many similar e-marketing platform providers only offer both of these stations – if telephone support is a deal-breaker for you you may wish to consider Aweber, which nonetheless supplies it (you can read our Aweber review here).
Concerning the caliber of Getresponse support, I have not had to use it very often (a good thing) but once I’ve I have found it for a small mixed bag (less of a fantastic thing). Mailchimp and Aweber provide some similar reporting performance (particularly around sales monitoring ) but Getresponse’s reporting application is decidedly one of most featured on the market (it certainly trounces the stats options provided by Mad Mimi and Campaign Monitor).
So far so good with Getresponse, however, in regards to templates, Getresponse arguably falls down a little.
Regrettably, the templates provided from the box look a bit dated; they are not as attractive as the ones provided by Mailchimp or even Campaign Monitor (and I marginally prefer Aweber’s offering here too).
On the other hand, the templates are extremely tweakable – you can change fonts, designs and vision easily enough with all the controls provided; and naturally there’s nothing to prevent you designing your HTML email template and minding the code for this.
Additionally, there are tons of templates to choose from — over 500 — and they are presented in easy-to-understand categories, therefore it is generally pretty simple to find a good starting point to get a template and then edit it before you are delighted with the design.
If you’re really unhappy with the templates offered by Getresponse, there’s also the choice of purchasing a template by a third party supplier such as Theme Forest.

Landing page Builder
Online advertising campaigns which use landing pages will usually generate far more leads in the event, instead of simply directing people to a (cluttered!) Website, they point users to attractive’squeeze pages’ comprising clear info and a clean, well-designed data capture form.
Getresponse provides something very beneficial in this regard that the majority of its rivals do not: a landing page founder (and one that’s mobile-friendly to boot).
Products like Campaign Monitor and Aweber require you to make use of a third party (and paid-for) landing page generating tool like Unbounce or Instapage; Mailchimp lately introduced some landing page performance but it’s yet to become as sophisticated at Getresponse’s.
However, unless you’re on a Getresponse’Pro’,’Max’ or’Enterprise’ program, the Getresponse landing page functionality is rather limited: you can just create one landing page, that can only be displayed 1,000 times a month.

If you’re serious about landing pages – plus they are certainly a helpful attribute – then it’s definitely worth considering among the more expensive Getresponse plans.
You can purchase the Landing Pages attribute as an add-on to get an extra $15 a month, but very frustratingly, although the add-on permits you to show an unlimited number of landing pages to potential subscribers, it does not include A/B testing.
Therefore, if I was interested in the Getresponse landing page performance, I wouldn’t bother with this rather half-baked add-on: I’d just go for a few of the more expensive programs (which I guess is what Getresponse want you to do) .
Getresponse was before its rivals for quite some time with its responsive email design functionality, which automatically adjusts your e-newsletter’s template so that if a user is reading it onto a mobile device, the layout and fonts will be optimized for the device in question.
Most competing products have captured up on this today, and extend responsive email templates, but Getresponse is better than most similar products when it comes to displaying a reactive record of your e-newsletter – you just hit a’mobile preview’ button for a quick snapshot of what your email resembles on a smartphone (see picture right).

Customer Relationship Management
Among the most frustrating facets of using many well-known CRM tools is the need to export information to CSV and straight back into your email marketing tool as a way to do mailouts (or the need to export info from your email marketing tool in your CRM to add leads to it).
When I watched Getresponse lately introducing a new CRM feature into their plans I was intrigued – this could potentially do away with all that data exporting and importing, and keep everything neatly in 1 place.
Initially I was not that impressed with the Getresponse CRM tool as you could only use it to perform quite basic jobs: you could create sales pipelines, add contacts to them and track activity (mails, phone calls etc.) with those contacts manually.
But recently Getresponse have upped their video game a bit on this front. The CRM is now integrated with all Getresponse’s email marketing operation and you can add users to a CRM pipeline according to their action (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or trigger autoresponders based on the addition of a new contact into a pipeline phase.
An example of how you could use this functionality would be as follows:
It is possible to add a contact to a specific stage on a sales pipeline based on the page of your site that they finished a form ;
you can then send them a automated email tailored to this pipeline stage a few days later;
and dependent on the action they took with regard to that email (clicking on a particular link ) you can automatically move them onto another stage of the pipeline and invite invite them to a webinar.
It’s very clever stuff, and I can’t think of any email advertising product offering such a tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. For this type of functionality you normally must look at dedicated — and more costly — CRM products like Salesforce and Infusionsoft.
However, it is not all good news about the CRM front there are a few big things missing from Getresponse’s CRM attribute set.
The most glaring omission is email activity monitoring. Other CRM packages permit you to bcc a dropbox email address whenever you send an email to a lead or client; doing so keeps a record of this communication in the contact’s history. There’s currently no method of doing so with the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an simple way to send one-to-one mails to leads or customers.
And strangely, if you click on a contact in a bargain pipeline, you can’t see their contact action — i.e., the activities they have taken (open, clicks etc.) with regard to previous communications that you’ve delivered to your prospects aren’t displayed. To see this, you need to go from the CRM section of Getresponse, search for your own contact in the contacts section and then click on their details. But guess what? Doing this does not exhibit their history.
Task management is non-existent too: Unlike committed CRM tools, there is no way to assign tasks to other team members.
Eventually, adding contacts into a pipeline stage is tough. You have to add contacts to a list , then visit the CRM pipeline, include a bargain and search your lists for the contact you just added. From a usability standpoint this is very clunky and time consuming. You should just have the ability to put in a bargain directly to a pipeline and input the contact details of your guide or customer at that point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is a bit half-baked. However, it’s a new attribute and the stuff it could do on the automation aspect is remarkable. I’m hopeful that this feature gets developed over time since done right, it is potentially a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the capability to sponsor webinars on the platform.
Given that webinars are generally utilized as a lead-generation strategy, the idea of having your email database along with your webinar tool under precisely the same roof is extremely attractive.
The pricing is also very competitive also compared to based webinar solutions. The email deliverability rate – the percentage of e-newsletters delivered that successfully hit inboxes – is obviously an important thing to look at when choosing an email marketing tool.
Not all email advertising providers are that forthright about their deliverability rates; but Getresponse seems pretty open about this, with this to say about it in their own website:

Because deliverability depends on many factors, including the content of your messages, the deliverability rate could vary for each mailing. For all our clients jointly, however, we’re proud to say our overall deliverability rate currently stands at 99%.
Obviously you are going to have to take the company’s word for this, but assuming it’s accurate, it’s a good speed and inspires confidence that the vast majority of emails that you send using Getresponse will reach their intended recipients.
What’s more, Getresponse actually gives you the deliverability rate of each message in your email analytics – this is something that I have not encountered on rival products’ metrics. A thumbs up for it.
I really do need to pull Getresponse on something relating to deliverability nevertheless: to guarantee a high deliverability speed, it’s a good idea to use a system named DKIM email authentication. You are able to use DKIM using Getresponse – but only on the costlier Getresponse’Max’ plans.

Whilst its drag-and-drop approach does in theory provide a very flexible approach to create blocks of content and transfer them about an e-newsletter, in practice it is quite clunky to use and may lead to accidental deletion of content, or placement of it at the incorrect portion of the e-newsletter.
If you can get your head around it, and practice using it a little bit, it does result in a helpful instrument – it is just that the implementation of it might be rather better.
Additionally, as described above, the CRM tool might be better from a usability point of view — adding contacts to deals could be unnecessarily difficult.
The 30-day complimentary trial which Getresponse provides is fully operational and the free trial isn’t contingent upon supplying credit card details.
This helps you avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for this particular trial and today I’m getting charged for a commodity I don’t use” scenario.
The only down side to this free trial is that it restricts the number of readers it is possible to send to to 1000. It would be useful if that could be raised a little, as it would help prospective users try the tool out in more’real world’ situations.

It’s also worth pointing out that Mailchimp offers thinner pricing bands, meaning that based on how big your listing, it may occasionally be a slightly cheaper option than Getresponse.
In the database end of things, Getresponse’s pricing is really competitive too – you can sponsor a database comprising 1,000 email addresses for $15 a month using Getresponse, compared to $29 with Aweber; $59 on Campaign Monitor (infinite send).
Mailchimp’s monthly fee to get a 1,000 record database is the same as Getresponse’s; and Mad Mimi supplies a slightly cheaper, if less operational offering for $12 per month.
Two final things to be Conscious of about the pricing front:
Some competing suppliers — especially Mailchimp – provide completely free accounts for users that have a few documents (but these don’t offer the full assortment of features that you get on a paid plan).

It is also one of the most intriguing products of its type – because it provides email marketing, landing pages, CRM and webinars all under one roof. It is hard to consider any competing product that delivers this’all round’ proposal, and it’s what proceeds to convince us to use it for Style Factory’s email advertising.
Some developments to Getresponse do have to be made nonetheless, especially where the email designer is concerned – its own drag and drop interface is much more fiddly and less responsive than it ought to be.
