Getresponse’s attribute set is arguably one of the most comprehensive out there.
Not only does this provide all of the crucial stuff you’d expect from an email marketing platform – record templates, hosting, autoresponders, analytics and so forth, but as mentioned above, it’s been expanding the attribute set to the point where it’s morphing into an all-in-one / CRM-style marketing platform.
The question is if Getresponse is a jack of all trades and master of not – let us drill down to the key features to find out.
Up until very recently Getresponse support was amongst the most comprehensive available for email advertising tools: the company offered phone service alongside live chat support, email service and various online tutorials / tools.
Regrettably, the telephone service has been discontinued. Instead you’ll need to use live chat (24/7) or email support. Regrettably, the templates provided from the box look a bit dated; they are not as attractive as the ones provided by Mailchimp or even Campaign Monitor (and that I marginally prefer Aweber’s offering here also ).
On the plus side, the templates are very tweakable – you can change fonts, layouts and vision easily enough with all the controls provided; and naturally there’s nothing to prevent you simply designing your HTML email template and minding the code for this.
Furthermore, you will find tons of templates to choose from — around 500 — and they are presented in easy-to-understand categories, so it is generally pretty simple to locate a good beginning point for a template and then edit it until you are happy with the plan.
If you are really not pleased with the templates provided by Getresponse, there’s also the option of buying a template from a third party provider such as Theme Forest.
Another thing worth pointing out seeing Getresponse’s templates is that the range of RSS-to-email software options are not very extensive (only 11 templates are supplied – well short of their 700+ available for routine newsletters!) Landing page Builder

Most competing products have caught up on this today, and offer responsive email templates, but Getresponse is far better than most similar goods as soon as it comes to displaying a reactive preview of your e-newsletter – you just hit on a’cellphone preview’ button for an instant snapshot of what your email resembles on a smartphone (see image right).

Customer Relationship Management
One of the most frustrating aspects of using many famous CRM tools is the necessity to export data to CSV and back into your email marketing instrument in order to do mailouts (or the need to export info from the email marketing tool into your CRM to add leads to it).

The CRM is now integrated with all Getresponse’s email marketing operation and you can add users into a CRM pipeline based on their activity (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or activate autoresponders based on the accession of a new contact to a pipeline phase.
An example of how you could use this functionality would be as follows:
It is possible to add a contact to a particular stage on a sales pipeline based on the page of your website that they finished a form ;
you can then send them a automated email tailored to that pipeline stage a few days later;

It is very smart stuff, and I can’t think of any email advertising product offering such a tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. For this type of functionality you normally must look at dedicated — and more expensive — CRM products such as Salesforce and Infusionsoft.
But, it’s not all fantastic news on the CRM front — there are a few big things missing from Getresponse’s CRM attribute collection.
The most glaring omission is email activity monitoring. Other CRM packages permit you to bcc a dropbox email address any time you send an email to some lead or customer; doing this keeps a list of this communication in the contact’s history. There is currently no method of doing this with all the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an simple way to send one-to-one mails to leads or clients.
And strangely, when you click a contact within a deal pipeline, you can’t see their contact action — i.e., the activities they’ve taken (open, clicks etc.) in regards to previous communications which you have delivered to your leads are not displayed. To observe this, you have to go from the CRM part of Getresponse, search for your own contact in the contacts section and then click on their details. But guess what? Doing this does not display their deal history.
Task management is non-existent too: unlike committed CRM tools, there is no way to assign tasks to other group members.
Eventually, adding contacts into a pipeline stage is difficult. You have to add contacts to a list first, then go to the CRM pipeline, include a bargain and search your lists to receive the contact you just added. From a usability point of view this is very clunky and time consuming. You should just have the ability to put in a bargain directly to a pipeline and then enter the contact information of your lead or customer at that point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is somewhat half-baked. However, it is a new feature and the stuff it can perform on the automation aspect is remarkable. I’m optimistic that this attribute becomes developed over time because done right, it’s possibly a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the ability to sponsor webinars on the stage.
Given that webinars are usually used as a lead-generation tactic, the notion of having your email database along with your webinar tool under precisely the exact same roof is very appealing.

If you’re able to get your head around it, and practice using it a little bit, it will result in a helpful tool – it is just that the implementation of it could be rather better.
Also, as described above, the CRM tool might be better from a usability point of view adding contacts to deals could be unnecessarily difficult.
The 30-day free trial that Getresponse supplies is fully operational and the free trial is not contingent upon supplying credit card information.
This helps you avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for this particular trial and today I am getting charged for a commodity that I don’t use” scenario.
The only down side to the free trial is the fact that it limits the number of subscribers you can send to to 1000. It would be good if this could be raised a little, as it would help prospective users try out the tool in more’real world’ scenarios.

It’s also worth pointing out that Mailchimp offers thinner pricing rings, meaning that depending on the size of your list, it may sometimes be a slightly cheaper option than Getresponse.
At the smaller database end of things, Getresponse’s pricing is pretty competitive too – you can host a database comprising 1,000 email addresses for $15 per month with Getresponse, compared to $29 with Aweber; $59 on Campaign Monitor (infinite send).
Mailchimp’s monthly fee for a 1,000 record database will be the same as Getresponse’s; and Mad Mimi provides a marginally cheaper, if less operational offering for $12 per month.
Two final things to be aware of about the pricing front:
Some competing providers — notably Mailchimp – offer completely free account for users with a small number of records (but these don’t offer the full range of features that you get on a paid program ).
As mentioned before, if you’re prepared to pay upfront for 1 or two years, you can avail of substantial discounts that the other competitors do not yet provide.

Getresponse represents one of the more cost-effective tactics to host and speak with an email .
It’s also among the most intriguing products of its kind – in that it provides email marketing, landing pages, CRM and webinars all under a single roof. Some developments to Getresponse do have to be made nonetheless, particularly where the email programmer is concerned – its drag and drop interface is much more fiddly and less responsive than it ought to be.
