Background Permission Based Email Marketing Rules
When I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what would you say? Permission Based Email Marketing Rules
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?

Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So today, in this short article, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it really stands its own ground against the big boys…

Like most email advertising providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the software.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information like your company name, site, Business, address, company size, record size and also the kind of content you plan to send.
Then, You Have to confirm your Website (or domain name).
This remains part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is associated to this domain so they could email you a verification link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Measures, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Site, and determine whether you’re a good fit for their service.
(In other words, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and perform with the features, but you will not be able to send anything before accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these measures are not ideal for getting started, it Does help stop malicious users from hurting everyone else’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to Deal with The majority of your email marketing.
(We will get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But whether it is a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always a reason to send a more instant email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Create Campaign’ will provide you several choices.
– Regular effort: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Versions, such as subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t start your broadcast email, with the choice of altering the subject line and email articles.
– RSS effort: Create a recurring campaign That sends new content to subscribers using your website’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few additional choices, most of these will follow The same step-by-step procedure of a normal effort.
So let’s walk you through it.
Once you click on to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Pick a favorite editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can change to the Templates tab and select from one of their pre-designed email templates — that will move you into the dragn’ drop editor by default.
In the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to choose From which is a little on the low side, but the layouts are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you would just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I’ll choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to use, Making viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the cubes in the sidebar to add distinct Kinds of content to your email, including videos, product columns, and social connections.
After making your adjustments, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ options where you can select your classes or sections.
The advanced tab also allows you To build segment-like rules , in the event your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, before sending, you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, if that’s immediately, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Permission Based Email Marketing Rules
Managing Your Clients
Possessing granular control over your readers is arguably among The most important facets of any email advertising program today.
Because highly personalized campaigns Are Essential if You are searching to increase opens, clicks, and, most importantly, your conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”tag” readers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you open up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll notice two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially rules.
Your subscribers belong to a section only when they meet the Specified rules, and will be automatically inserted or removed accordingly.
Here’s what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can even blend Principles, in addition to another rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for classes, and also the difference in title, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or through an Automation rule — which we’ll get to in a moment — and they have no value aside from what you call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite offers a hand in case you’re uncertain:
Fundamentally, groups are much more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments permit you to bulge multiple subscribers collectively according to a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I will admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. Besides, they’re optional.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their particular areas, such as name, business, and country.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your readers along with Your custom field information in separate columns… or can easily add these fields to a forms which will only apply to prospective subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I created and added into a form:
I won’t go too much to the form Things here since I have an entire section on this below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field information from fresh Readers, you can pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I am barely scratching the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it is important to understand that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to say MailerLite has their subscriber Direction and personalization features on stage. Permission Based Email Marketing Rules
If you are not impressed by what you have seen up to Now, then maybe The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you’ll be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, it does offer a fantastic base to work from if, for example most people, you don’t have that pure eye for design.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, though They finally do the identical job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further construct or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and this is already better than a few dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the basic building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
No, it will not be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite really Provides a Decent set of type building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there’s a whole lot to cover .
Let’s begin with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to show it on particular pages.
Despite starting off super fundamental, the form designer allows you To personalize everything from the form style, subjects, background, title, input fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your backup in real-time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there is more to some form than just its physical appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure how the Form functions, including adding extra fields and setting a custom success page.
(There’s a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded form and prevents users .
Last but surely not least, you Can assess how your form displays on mobile by switching the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t be able to make any design changes here, but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of this Embedded form but like I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of this setup process is identical, there are A few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth selection, they do provide a fantastic base to work from and the editor is at least as simple to use for this form kind.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template takes me to a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new choices under form types Now around:
Contemplating paid programs such as Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to see this amount of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can play with the styling options to get it Matched up with your own branding.
Finally, you can choose the near Behaviour of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
This is where most email Marketing platforms would leave you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber development, automation analytics, and kind signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you specific reporting for that effort.
This is where you’ll discover some statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary consumer…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into different areas of the report to get a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Mail’ tab also shows a click map, so You can see your readers interacted to another.
Reports for automations are also Available under the’Automations’ tab, although I found these to be less insightful than effort reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and many will get the available statistics more than enough to fulfill their demands.
What is email advertising without a dashboard of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The great news? If you have ever used a visual workflow builder, You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and simple to navigate — something that certainly can’t be said for every email marketing program.
After setting your trigger, you can begin adding measures to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, adding a Delay, a conditional split, or an action, like transferring a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I put together, where readers Are unsubscribed when they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite ought to have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign since it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s now no automation for transferring Readers directly into a different automation.
That being said, most of these actions can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into different groups that trigger new automation workflows. It is just not as effective…. yet.
Another question of efficiency here is when creating new emails From the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email block to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your subject line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the review.
This time, but as Soon as You’ve established your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you straight back into the automations workflow rather than the usual sending options.
Ultimately, your email will probably be Loaded into your automation.
A Wonderful touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, so it’s possible to get an concept of what it contains at a glance.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on paper, it’s really much faster than what I’m utilized to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, you’ll probably find that this downgrade in functionality.
It’s fast enough for me, Personally, however I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there’s 1 type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, also that I think it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on how Subscribers interact with the webpages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting only isn’t available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or intend to use, you might want to skip this one. Permission Based Email Marketing Rules
The cost of MailerLite is among those tools biggest Selling points, and let’s face it, most of us love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) for as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding on your mails using this program, it’s still an amazing option for those starting out.
And what about the top plans?
It turns out, at approximately half the Price of this competition generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the cheapest options on the industry. Additionally, if you’re ready to pay annually, you are also able to get a much greater discount.
In fact, I haven’t been able to locate anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of those email marketing tools to interrupt The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of years, which is no simple feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to beat.
