If I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what would you say? Peanut
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online businesses today, email advertising continues to be Dominated by the same big players for the last decade. Which means that they get encouraged very deeply and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So now, in this review, I will be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it stands its ground against the big boys…
…and, what’s more, whether youshould consider making the switch.

Like most email advertising providers Nowadays, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the software.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information like your organization name, website, Industry, address, business size, record size and even the kind of material you intend to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Site (or domain ).
This remains part of the approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is associated to that domain in order that they could email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Steps, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Site, and ascertain whether you’re a fantastic fit for their services.
(In other words, they are making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to use the software to create campaigns and play with the features, but you will not be able to send anything before approved.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
But while these measures are not ideal for getting started, it Does help stop unscrupulous users from damaging everybody’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to handle Nearly all your email marketing.
(We will get to automations shortly, do not worry.)
But whether it is a new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always some excuse to send a more immediate email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Create Campaign’ will give you several options.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, such as subject line, from title and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t open your broadcast email, with the choice of changing the subject line and email content.
– RSS effort: Produce a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to readers using your website’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few additional options, most of these will follow Exactly the same step-by-step process of a normal campaign.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click to create your effort, you’ll be asked to Pick a preferred editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can change to the Templates tab and choose from among their pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor .
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to select From which is somewhat on the low side, but the layouts are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you would just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Which makes customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the blocks in the sidebar to include distinct Kinds of content to your email, such as videos, merchandise columns, and social links.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be taken to the recipients’ choices where you are able to select your groups or sections.
The tab also allows you To develop segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting is not quite perfect.
Finally, right before sending, you’ll get into the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, whether that’s instantly, at a set time/date, or according to your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Peanut
Managing Your Subscribers
Having granular control over your readers is arguably among The most important aspects of any email marketing software today.
Because highly personalized campaigns Are Essential if You’re searching to increase clicks, opens, and, most importantly, your own conversions.
And while most providers allow you to”label” readers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you open up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically principles.
Your readers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified principles, and will be automatically added or removed so.
Here’s what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice how you can even combine Rules, in addition to an alternate rule if the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for groups, and despite the difference in title, These act much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are updated manually or through an Automation principle — which we’ll get into in a moment — and they have no value besides what you call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, but MailerLite delivers a hand in the event you’re uncertain:
Basically, groups are much more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments permit you to bulge multiple contributors collectively based on a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I will admit… but I believe it’s a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. Besides, they’re optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own fields, such as title, business, and country.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your subscribers along with Your custom field information in distinct columns… or may easily add these fields to a types which will only apply to future readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I created and added to a form:
I won’t go too much into the shape Things here because I have a whole section on that below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wanted to use this attribute.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field data from fresh Readers, you are able to pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I am barely scraping the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it’s important to understand that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it is reasonable to state MailerLite has their contributor Management and personalization features on stage. Peanut
If you’re not impressed with what you’ve seen up to Now, then maybe The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you’ll be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Is not winning any awards, but it will offer a great base to work from if, like most people, you don’t have that natural eye for layout.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all ultimately do the same task; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further build or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is already better than some dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the basic building blocks, you can use elements like Hero segments, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all 3 kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite really offers a Decent pair of type building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there’s a whole lot to cover .
Let us begin with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to display it on specific pages.
Despite starting off super fundamental, the form designer allows you To personalize everything from the form style, fields, background, title, enter fields and, of course, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your copy in real-time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there’s more to some form than just its physical appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form works, including adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There’s even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success page…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, Which will replace the embedded kind and prevents users .
Last but certainly not least, you Can check how your form displays on cellular by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that’s an Summary of this Embedded form but like I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this installation Procedure is identical, you will find Still a few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive selection, they do offer a good base to work from and the editor is at least as simple to use with this form type.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me into a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new options under form types Now around:
Considering paid tools such as Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup forms.
And, as before, you can play the styling options to get it Matched with your branding.
Finally, you can Select the close Behavior of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text option, or have both.
That is where most email Marketing platforms will render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click info, Subscriber development, automation stats, and form signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you special reporting for that effort.
This is where you’ll find a few statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying environment, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into different areas of the report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also shows a click map, so You can see your subscribers interacted to one another.
Reports for automations are also Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, even though I found to be less enlightening than effort reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and many will get the available statistics more than sufficient to meet their demands.
What is email advertising without a dashboard of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this particular review.
The good news? If you have ever used a visual workflow builder, You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and easy to navigate — something that certainly can not be said for each and every email advertising program.
After setting your trigger, you can begin adding measures to your workflow.
These measures could be anything from sending an email, adding a Delay, a bubble break, or an act, like transferring a subscriber or updating their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I set together, where readers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign since it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s now no automation for moving Subscribers directly into a different automation.
That being said, the Majority of these actions can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different classes that trigger new automation workflows. It’s simply not as efficient…. yet.
Another question of efficiency here is when generating new emails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to add your topic line which appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the review.
This time, but once you’ve created your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you back into the automations workflow rather than the usual sending alternatives.
Finally, your email address will probably be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation block, which means it’s possible to find an idea of what it contains at a glance.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on paper, it is really much faster than what I’m used to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, so you will likely find that this downgrade in performance.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there’s 1 type of automation You will not find in MailerLite, also I think that it’s important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or step) based on how Readers interact with the pages on your website.
This kind of behavioral targeting just isn’t available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or plan to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Peanut
The cost of MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the tools largest Selling things, and let’s face it, most of us love a fantastic deal.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) for as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding on your mails using this plan, it’s still an amazing alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the top programs?
It ends up, at around half of the Cost of this competition on average, MailerLite is by far among the least expensive options available on the industry. Additionally, if you’re ready to pay annually, you are also able to get an even greater discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to locate anything that does the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of those few marketing tools The (very crowded) sector in recent decades, which is no simple feat.
While it is not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you will seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking about giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you From the comments. Peanut
