Getresponse’s feature set is arguably one of the most comprehensive out there.
Not only does this provide all the crucial stuff you’d expect from an email marketing platform – list hosting, templates, autoresponders, analytics and so forth, but as mentioned previously, it has been expanding the feature set to the point where it is morphing into an all-in-one / CRM-style marketing platform.
The question is whether Getresponse is a jack of all trades and master of none – let us drill down into the key qualities to learn.
Up until very recently Getresponse service was amongst the most comprehensive available for email advertising tools: the company offered phone support alongside live chat support, email support and various online tutorials / tools.
Sadly, the phone support has now been discontinued. Instead you are going to need to use live chat (24/7) or email support. To be honest, many similar e-marketing platform providers only offer you these two channels – if telephone support is a deal-breaker for you then you might wish to consider Aweber, which nonetheless supplies it (you can read our Aweber review here).

Additionally, there are tons of templates to choose from — over 500 — and they’re introduced in easy-to-understand categories, so it’s generally pretty simple to locate a good beginning point to get a template and then edit it before you are delighted with the plan.
If you’re really not pleased with the templates offered by Getresponse, there is also the choice of purchasing a template from a third party supplier such as Theme Forest.

Autoresponders are e-newsletters that are sent to your subscribers at intervals depending on you — you can put them up so that immediately after somebody signals up to your mailing list, they receive a welcome message from your company; a week later they can receive a discount offer for a number of your goods or services; 3 months later they could receive an encouragement to follow you on social networking. And so on.
Getresponse’s autoresponder functionality is an integral selling point – it provides among the most comprehensive feature sets available.

Landing page Builder
Online advertising campaigns that use landing pages will usually generate far more leads if, rather than simply directing individuals to a (cluttered!) Website, they tip users to appealing’squeeze pages’ comprising clear info and a clean, well-designed data capture form.
Getresponse provides something quite useful in this respect that most of its rivals do not: a landing page founder (and one that’s mobile-friendly to boot).
Products like Campaign Monitor and Aweber ask you to use a third party (and non invasive ) landing page creating tool like Unbounce or Instapage; Mailchimp lately introduced a landing page functionality but it’s yet to become sophisticated at Getresponse’s.
But unless you’re on a Getresponse’Pro’,’Max’ or’Enterprise’ program, the Getresponse landing page performance is fairly limited: you can just produce one landing page, that could only be displayed 1,000 times per month.
Additionally, and very importantly, you can’t utilize the landing page A/B testing functionality on the cheapest Getresponse program (where the system shows a sample of your users different versions of your landing page, computes conversion rates, and ultimately rolls out the best performing landing page automatically).
If you’re serious about landing pages – plus they are certainly a helpful attribute – then it is definitely worth looking at one of the more expensive Getresponse plans.
You may purchase the Landing Pages attribute as an add-on for an extra $15 per month, but quite frustratingly, even though the add-on allows you to show an infinite amount of landing pages to potential subscribers, it does not consist of A/B testing.
Accordingly, if I was considering the Getresponse landing page performance, I would not bother with this rather half-baked add-on: I’d just go for one of the more expensive plans (which I suppose is what Getresponse want you to do) .
Getresponse was ahead of its rivals for quite a while with its responsive email design functionality, which automatically corrects your e-newsletter’s template so that if an individual is reading it onto a mobile device, the layout and fonts will be optimized for the device in question.
Most competing products have caught up on this now, and extend responsive email templates, but Getresponse is far better than many similar products as soon as it comes to displaying a reactive record of your e-newsletter – you simply hit on a’mobile preview’ button for an instant snapshot of your email looks like on a smartphone (see picture right).

Customer Relationship Management
One of the most frustrating facets of utilizing many famous CRM tools is that the necessity to export information to CSV and straight back into your email marketing instrument in order to perform mailouts (or the necessity to export data from the email marketing tool into your CRM to add leads to it).
So when I watched Getresponse recently introducing a new CRM attribute into their plans I was intrigued – that could possibly eliminate all that info exporting and importing, and keep everything neatly in 1 place.
Initially I was not that impressed with all the Getresponse CRM tool as you can only use it to carry out rather basic jobs: you could create sales pipelines, add contacts to these and track activity (emails, phone calls etc.) with these contacts manually.
But lately Getresponse have upped their video game a bit on this particular front. The CRM is now integrated with all of Getresponse’s email marketing operation and you can add users into a CRM pipeline based on their action (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or trigger autoresponders depending on the accession of a new contact to a pipeline stage.
An example of how you could use this functionality would be as follows:
You can add a contact to a specific stage on a sales pipeline depending on the page of your site that they finished a form ;
you could then send a automated email tailored to this pipeline stage a couple of days afterwards;
and based on the action they took with regard to this email (clicking on a certain link ) you could automatically move them on another stage of the pipeline and automatically invite them into a webinar.
It’s very clever stuff, and that I can’t think of any similar email advertising product offering such a tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. For this kind of performance you normally must appear at dedicated — and more costly — CRM products like Salesforce and Infusionsoft.
But, it is not all good news on the CRM front — there are some big things missing from Getresponse’s CRM feature set.
The most glaring omission is e mail activity tracking. Additional CRM packages allow you to bcc a dropbox email address any time you send an email to some lead or client; doing this keeps a list of the communication from the contact’s history. There is currently no way of doing this with all the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an simple way to send one-to-one mails to prospects or clients.
And oddly, if you click on a contact in a deal pipeline, you can not see their contact activity — i.e., the activities they’ve taken (open, clicks etc.) in regards to previous communications that you’ve sent to your leads are not displayed. To see this, you have to go from the CRM part of Getresponse, hunt for your contact in the contacts section and click on their details. But guess what? Doing this doesn’t display their history.
Task management is non-existent also: unlike dedicated CRM tools, there’s no way to assign tasks to other team members.
Eventually, adding contacts to your pipeline stage is difficult. You have to add contacts to a list first, then visit the CRM pipeline, add a bargain and hunt your lists for the contact you just added. From a usability standpoint this is very clunky and time consuming. You should just be able to add a bargain directly to a pipeline and then input the contact details of your lead or customer at the point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is somewhat half-baked. But that said, it’s a new feature and the things it can do on the automation side is remarkable. I’m hopeful that this attribute becomes developed over time because done right, it’s possibly a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the ability to sponsor webinars on the stage.
Given that webinars are generally used as a lead-generation tactic, the notion of having your email database along with your webinar tool under precisely the same roof is extremely attractive.
The pricing is also very aggressive too by comparison to established webinar solutions. For instance, among the leading webinar providers, Gotowebinar, charges $199 per month to host webinars with as much as 500 attendees; you can really do exactly the same (plus a whole lot more) with Getresponse for $165 (as long as your list size is under 25,000).

The email deliverability rate – the proportion of e-newsletters sent that successfully hit inboxes – is obviously a very important point to look at when choosing an email marketing instrument.
Not all email marketing providers are that forthright about their deliverability prices; however, Getresponse seems pretty open about that, with this to say about it on their own site:

With a double opt-in procedure, the individual signing up to your record is sent via an email containing a confirmation link that s/he must click before being subscribed.
The most important benefit of one opt-in process is that it makes it very easy for users to sign up for your mailing list; it also generally increases conversion rate and therefore the amount of readers on your list. A dual opt-in process is best for verifying the people subscribing to your list are using real email addresses and contributes to cleaner data and more precise stats (because open rates etc. are calculated based on a list comprising just email addresses).
Now, the fantastic news here is that Getresponse allows you to take advantage of either opt-in approach – this isn’t true with all competing products. Thus a thumbs up for Getresponse to be flexible on this.
You are probably thinking that all this sounds pretty good — but to be honest, I think there’s a great deal of room for advancement with respect to Getresponse form templates.
For a start, they’re not responsive (i.e., they won’t resize themselves automatically to suit the device they’re being watched on).
Additionally, no controls are offered by Getresponse to change forms off or on on particular devices or individual pages of your site. In the light of Google’s new approach to pop-ups (where sites can take a hit in search results if they display’intrusive interstitials’ on mobile devices) this really is a bit of a concern.

One place I feel that might be significantly better from a user-friendliness standpoint is the Getresponse e-newsletter editor.
Whilst its drag-and-drop approach does in theory provide a very flexible way to make blocks of articles and move them about an e-newsletter, in practice it’s quite user friendly to use and may cause accidental deletion of content, or placement of it at the wrong portion of the e-newsletter.
If you’re able to get your head around it, and practice using it a little bit, it will make for a useful tool – it’s only that the implementation of it might be somewhat better.
Additionally, as described above, the CRM tool might be far better from a usability point of view — adding contacts to deals can be unnecessarily difficult.
The 30-day free trial which Getresponse provides is completely functional and the free trial is not contingent upon supplying credit card information.
This helps you avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for this particular trial and now I am getting charged for a commodity I do not use” scenario.
The only down side to the free trial is that it limits the amount of subscribers you can send to 1000. It would be useful if this could be increased a little, as it might help prospective users try out the tool in more’real-world’ scenarios.

Users – you can only have one user account on the’Email’ program; by comparison you receive 3 on’Pro’, 5 on’Max’ and 10 on’Enterprise’.
Pricing Vs Competitors
Provided that you are pleased to use one of the entry-level’Email’ plans, the pay-per-month Getresponse plans are on the whole cheaper than those provided by many of its key competitors, especially in case you’ve got a fairly high number of email addresses onto your own database.

The sole well-known service I can think of that comes in considerably more affordable is Mad Mimi, which charges $42 per month to sponsor up to 10,000 email addresses (note however that the performance provided by Mad Mimi is nowhere near as extensive as Getresponse’s or indeed the other products mentioned above).
Additionally, it is worth pointing out that Mailchimp offers thinner pricing bands, meaning that based on how big your list, it might occasionally be a slightly cheaper option than Getresponse.
In the database end of things, Getresponse’s pricing is pretty competitive too – you can sponsor a database containing 1,000 email addresses for $15 per month using Getresponse, compared to $29 with Aweber; $59 on Campaign Monitor (infinite send).
Mailchimp’s monthly fee for a 1,000 record database will be exactly the same as Getresponse’s; and Mad Mimi supplies a slightly cheaper, if much less functional offering for $12 per month.
Two final things to be Conscious of about the pricing front:
Some competing suppliers — especially Mailchimp – offer completely free accounts for users with a few records (but these don’t offer the entire range of features that you get on a paid program ).
As mentioned earlier, if you are prepared to pay upfront for 1 or 2 years, you can avail of substantial discounts the other competitors don’t yet supply.

Getresponse represents one of the more cost-effective tactics to host and speak with an email database.
It’s also one of the most interesting products of its kind – because it provides email marketing, landing pages, CRM and webinars all under one roof. It’s hard to think of any competing product that offers this’all around’ proposition, and it is what proceeds to convince us to use it to Style Factory’s email marketing.
Some developments to Getresponse do have to be made however, especially where the email programmer is concerned – its drag and drop interface is much more fiddly and less responsive than it should be. A lot of improvements can be made into the data capture types also, particularly for users wishing to display them on mobile devices.
And from what I gather from reader feedback, there are improvements which could be made into the service offering.
Overall though I rate Getresponse very tremendously – you get substantial bang for your dollar with this product.

CRM functionality has to be improved substantially before it can be thought of as a replacement for a standalone CRM product.
There’s a limited range of RSS-to-HTML e-newsletter templates supplied.
You can just use’web-safe’ fonts from e-newsletters, which can make the templates seem marginally less slick than those supplied by competing goods.
The pricing arrangement is a little perplexing, with users having to pay something of a superior to access the landing page creator tool.
The free trial limits the number of subscribers you can send messages to to 1000.
The landing page add-on doesn’t allow you to execute A/B evaluations, meaning that so as to gain this functionality you are forced to use a more expensive plan than you may like.
