If I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what would you say? Octeth
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online businesses today, email advertising has been Dominated by the same large players for the previous decade. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the marketplace, causing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So today, in this short article, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it really stands its ground against the big boys…
…and, what’s more, whether youshould consider making the switch.

Like most email marketing providers Nowadays, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the program.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information like your company name, site, Business, address, company size, record size and even the kind of content you plan to send.
Then, you need to verify your Site (or domain name).
This remains part of the approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is associated to this domain in order that they could email you a verification link.
Once you’ve completed those Measures, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, assess your Website, and ascertain whether you’re a fantastic fit for their service.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and perform with the features, but you won’t have the ability to send anything until accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these measures are not perfect for getting started, it Does help stop unscrupulous users from damaging everyone else’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to handle The majority of your email marketing.
(We will get to automations soon, do not worry.)
But if it is a brand new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always some excuse to send a more immediate email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Produce Campaign’ will provide you several choices.
– Regular effort: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Versions, such as subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t start your broadcast email, together with the choice of altering the subject line and email articles.
– RSS effort: Create a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your website’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few added options, the Majority of these will follow The exact same step-by-step procedure of a standard effort.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your campaign, you’ll be asked to Pick a favorite editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can change to the Templates tab and choose from one of their pre-designed email templates — that will move you into the dragn’ drop editor .
At the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to choose From which is somewhat on the low side, however, the designs are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you’d just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I will select the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to use, Making viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the cubes in the sidebar to add different Kinds of articles to your email, including videos, product columns, and social links.
After making your changes, simply click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be taken to the recipients’ options where you can select your classes or sections.
The tab also allows you To build segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting is not quite perfect.
Finally, before sending, then you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, if that’s instantly, at a set time/date, or according to your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Octeth
Managing Your Clients
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most important facets of any email marketing software today.
Because highly personalized efforts Are Essential if You’re searching to increase clicks, opens, and, most importantly, your conversions.
And while many providers Permit You to”label” subscribers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you open up your subscriber dash, you’ll notice two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically rules.
Your subscribers belong to a segment only when they fulfill the Specified principles, and are automatically inserted or removed accordingly.
Here is what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can even combine Principles, as well as an alternate rule when the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and despite the difference in name, These behave much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or via an Automation rule — which we’ll get into in a moment — and they don’t have any value aside from what you call them.
As you start to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand At which Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite delivers a hand in case you’re uncertain:
Fundamentally, groups are much more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments allow you to bulge multiple contributors together based on a frequent denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it’s a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. In any case, they’re optional.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their particular fields, such as name, business, and nation.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your subscribers together with Your custom field information in separate columns… or can simply add these fields to a types which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I made and added to a form:
I won’t go too much into the shape Stuff here because I have a whole section on this below, but this is the strategy I would recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field data from fresh Readers, you are able to pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I am barely scraping the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it is important to understand this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to state MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on point. Octeth
If you’re not impressed with what you have seen up to Now, then maybe The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you will be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, but it does offer a fantastic base to work from if, for example the majority people, you don’t have that pure eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, however They all finally do the same job; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further build or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and this is already better than a few dedicated alternatives *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero segments, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all three kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite really Provides a Decent pair of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there is a lot to cover here.
Let’s begin with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then place on your website to display it on specific pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer allows you To personalize everything from the kind style, fields, background, name, input fields and, of course, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which gives you a chance To envision your own backup in real-time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there is more to some form than simply its physical appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure the way the Form functions, such as adding additional fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There’s a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And talking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded form also prevents users .
Last but certainly not least, you Can assess how your form displays on cellular by switching the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that is an overview of the Embedded form but as I said before, you can also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this installation Procedure is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do provide a fantastic base to work from and the editor is just as simple to use for this form kind.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template requires me to a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new choices under form types Now around:
Contemplating paid programs like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to see this level of control over popup forms.
And, as before, you can play with the styling options to get it Matched up with your branding.
Finally, you can Select the close Behavior of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text option, or have both.
That is where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Statistics in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click info, Subscriber development, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you special reporting for that effort.
This is where you’ll find some statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into different areas of this report for a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Email’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see exactly how your subscribers interacted with your mails compared to one another.
Reports for automations are Available under the’Automations’ tab, even though I found to be less insightful than effort reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and many will get the available data more than enough to meet their demands.
What’s email marketing without a dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this particular review.
The good news? If you’ve used a visual workflow builder, then You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, The automations interface is easy, clean and simple to navigate — something that certainly can’t be said for each and every email marketing program.
After setting your trigger, you can begin adding measures to your workflow.
These measures could be anything from sending an email, adding a Delay, a bubble break, or an act, such as moving a subscriber or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I put together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite should have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks a number of the conditional components. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s now no automation for transferring Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, the Majority of these actions can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into different groups that trigger new automation workflows. It’s simply much less effective…. yet.
Another question of efficiency here is when generating new mails In the automation workflow builder.
After having an email block to The workflow, you’ll be asked to add your subject line which appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, however, once you’ve created your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you straight back into the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email will probably be Loaded into your automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, so it’s possible to get an idea about what it contains at a glimpse.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it is really much faster than what I’m utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, you’ll probably find this a downgrade in performance.
It’s quick enough for me, Personally, but I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there is 1 type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on the way Subscribers interact with the webpages on your website.
This kind of behavioral targeting only is not available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you may want to skip this one. Octeth
The Price of MailerLite is one of the tools largest Selling things, and let’s face it, we all love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) to get up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding on your emails using this plan, it’s still an amazing alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the premium plans?
It ends up, at around half the Cost of the rivalry generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the cheapest options available on the industry. Plus, if you are willing to pay annually, you are also able to get an even greater discount.
In Reality, I have not been able to locate anything that does exactly the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of the email advertising tools The (very crowded) sector in recent decades, which is no simple feat.
While it’s not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you will seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking of giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you From the remarks. Octeth
