MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online businesses today, email advertising has been Dominated by the same large players for the last ten years. Which means they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time users to question their loyalties.

So today, in this short article, I will be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to find out if it really stands its own ground against the big boys…

Like most email marketing providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the software.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, site, Business, address, business size, record size and even the kind of material you intend to send.
Then, you need to verify your Site (or domain name).
This remains part of the approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to this domain in order that they could email you a confirmation link.
Once you’ve completed those Measures, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, check your Site, and ascertain whether you’re a fantastic match for their services.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to use the software to make campaigns and play with the features, but you won’t be able to send anything until accepted.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
But while these measures aren’t ideal for getting started, it Does help prevent malicious users from hurting everyone else’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to handle The majority of your email marketing.
(We will get to automations soon, do not worry.)
But whether it’s a new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Produce Campaign’ will give you several options.
– Regular effort: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, such as subject line, from name and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not open your broadcast email, with the option of altering the subject line and email content.
– RSS effort: Produce a recurring campaign That sends new content to subscribers using your website’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few added choices, most of these will follow Exactly the exact same step-by-step process of a standard campaign.
So let’s walk you through it.
Once you click to create your campaign, you’ll be requested to Pick a preferred editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can switch to the Templates tab and select from among their pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor by default.
At the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to choose From which is somewhat on the low side, however, the layouts are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you’d just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I’ll select the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the cubes in the sidebar to include distinct Types of content to your email, including videos, product columns, and social connections.
After making your adjustments, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ options where you can choose your groups or segments.
The tab also allows one To develop segment-like rules , in case your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, before sending, then you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, whether that is instantly, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Mindcomet
Handling Your Subscribers
Possessing granular control over your readers is arguably one of The most important aspects of any email advertising software now.
Because highly personalized campaigns are necessary if You are searching to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your own conversions.
And while most providers allow you to”label” subscribers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different approach.
When you open up your subscriber dash, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically principles.
Your readers belong to a section only when they meet the Specified principles, and will be automatically inserted or removed accordingly.
Here is what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice how you can even blend Rules, as well as an alternate rule if the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and also the difference in title, These behave much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it)
Unlike Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or through an Automation principle — that we will get into in a minute — and they don’t have any value besides what you actually call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, however, MailerLite offers a hand in the event you’re unsure:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple contributors together according to a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I’ll admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. In any case, they are discretionary.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their particular fields, such as title, business, and nation.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers along with Your custom field data in distinct columns… or may easily add these fields to a forms which will only apply to prospective subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I made and added into a form:
I will not go too much into the form Stuff here since I have an entire section on this below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve collected your custom field information from new Readers, you are able to pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Customized field.
I am barely scratching the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it is important to know that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it is reasonable to say MailerLite has their subscriber Management and personalization features on stage. Mindcomet
If you are not impressed by what you have seen up to Now, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you’ll be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, but it will offer a great base to work from if, for example most of us, you do not have that pure eye for layout.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, however They ultimately do the identical job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further construct or alter your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is better than some dedicated solutions *Infection * WPBakery.
Together with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it won’t be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Decent pair of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a lot to cover here.
Let us start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then place on your website to display it on specific pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer allows you To personalize everything from the kind style, subjects, background, name, enter fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which gives you a chance To envision your own backup in real time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there is more to a form than just its appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure how the Form works, including adding extra fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And talking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, That can replace the embedded form and prevents users from redirecting.
Last but certainly not least, you Can check the way your form screens on cellular by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that is an overview of this Embedded form but like I said before, you can also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this setup process is identical, there are A few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive choice, they do provide a fantastic base to work from and the editor is just as simple to use for this form type.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template requires me into a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new options under form types Now around:
Contemplating paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this level of control over popup forms.
And, like before, you can play the styling options to get it Matched with your branding.
Last, you can choose the near Behavior of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text choice, or have both.
This is where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click data, Subscriber development, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific coverage for that campaign.
This is where you’ll discover a few more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading environment, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary user…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into different areas of this report for a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also shows a click map, so It’s possible to see exactly how your subscribers interacted with your mails in relation to another.
Reports for automations will also be Available under the’Automations’ tab, even though I found these to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will get the available statistics more than sufficient to meet their demands.
What’s email marketing without a dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this review.
The good news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and easy to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for each and every email marketing program.
After establishing your trigger, you can Start adding steps to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a conditional split, or an action, like transferring a contributor or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.. )
For example, there’s now no automation for transferring Readers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these activities can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into different groups that trigger new automation workflows. It’s just much less effective…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when creating new mails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email block to The workflow, you’ll be asked to put in your topic line that then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the critique.
This time, however, as Soon as You’ve created your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you back into the automations workflow rather than the usual sending options.
Ultimately, your email will probably be Loaded into your automation.
A Wonderful touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation block, so it’s possible to get an idea of what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on newspaper, it’s really much quicker than what I’m used to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you will probably find that this downgrade in performance.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, however I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there is one type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or measure ) based on the way Subscribers interact with all the webpages on your website.
This Sort of behavioral targeting just isn’t accessible MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or plan to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Mindcomet
The Price of MailerLite is among the tools largest Selling points, and let’s face it, we all love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) for as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding on your mails using this plan, it’s still an wonderful alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the top programs?
It ends up, at approximately half of the Price of the rivalry on average, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the cheapest options on the market. Plus, if you’re ready to pay yearly, you can also get an even better discount.
In fact, I have not been able to locate anything that does the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among the very few marketing tools The (very crowded) sector in the last couple of years, and that’s no simple feat.
While it is not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking about giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you From the comments. Mindcomet
