When I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what would you say? Mailup
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online businesses today, email advertising continues to be Dominated by the identical big players for the previous ten years. Which means they get encouraged very deeply and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So today, in this review, I will be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to find out if it stands its ground against the big boys…
…and, what’s more, whether youshould consider making the switch.

Like most email advertising providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information like your organization name, site, Industry, address, company size, record size and even the type of material you intend to send.
Then, You Have to confirm your Site (or domain ).
This remains part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is related to that domain in order that they could email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Steps, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, assess your Website, and ascertain whether you’re a fantastic fit for their services.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to use the software to make campaigns and play with the features, but you won’t have the ability to send anything before accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
However, while these steps aren’t ideal for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from hurting everyone else’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to handle The majority of your email marketing.
(We will get to automations soon, do not worry.)
But if it is a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always some excuse to send a more instant email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Produce Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular effort: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Versions, such as subject line, from title and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to subscribers who Do not start your broadcast email, with the choice of changing the subject line and email content.
– RSS effort: Produce a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your website’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few added options, most of these will follow The same step-by-step procedure of a normal campaign.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your effort, you’ll be asked to Pick a favorite editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can change to the Templates tab and select from among the pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor by default.
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to select From which is a little on the low side, but the layouts are super modern.
And, of course, if you would just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I’ll select the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to use, Making customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the cubes in the sidebar to add distinct Kinds of content to your email, such as videos, product columns, and societal connections.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you will Be taken to the recipients’ choices where you are able to select your classes or sections.
The advanced tab also allows one To build segment-like rules , in the event your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, before sending, you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, whether that is instantly, at a set time/date, or according to your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Mailup
Handling Your Clients
Possessing granular control over your readers is arguably among The most essential facets of any email advertising software today.
Because highly personalized campaigns are necessary if You are searching to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your own conversions.
And while most providers allow you to”tag” subscribers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll notice two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically principles.
Your subscribers belong to a section only when they meet the Specified principles, and are automatically inserted or eliminated accordingly.
Here’s what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice how you can even combine Rules, in addition to another rule when the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for classes, and despite the difference in name, These behave much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but finally decided against it)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or through an Automation rule — which we’ll get to in a minute — and they have no value aside from what you call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, but MailerLite offers a hand in case you’re uncertain:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple subscribers together based on a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I will admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. Besides, they’re discretionary.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own areas, such as title, company, and country.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your subscribers along with Your custom field information in distinct columns… or can simply add these fields to a types which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added to a form:
I won’t go too much to the form Things here because I have an entire section on this below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, as Soon as You’ve gathered your custom field data from fresh Readers, you are able to pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Custom field.
I am barely scratching the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you understand that this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to state MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on point. Mailup
If you’re not impressed with what you have seen so far, then perhaps The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Is not winning any awards, it does offer a fantastic base to work from if, for example most of us, you don’t have that pure eye for design.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, however They all ultimately do the identical task; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further construct or alter your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual page builders, and this is better than some dedicated alternatives *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the fundamental building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
No, it will not be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite really Provides a Decent set of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a whole lot to cover here.
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to display it on particular pages.
Despite beginning super fundamental, the form designer allows you To customize everything from the kind style, fields, background, name, enter fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your copy in real time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there’s more to a form than simply its appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure how the Form works, including adding extra fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is even a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And talking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded form and prevents users .
Last but certainly not least, you Can assess the way your form displays on cellular by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any design changes here, but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that’s an Summary of this Embedded form but like I said before, you can also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this setup process is identical, you will find Still a few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do provide a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is just as easy to use with this form type.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template requires me to a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new choices under form types This time around:
Considering paid programs such as Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can perform with the styling options to get it Matched with your branding.
Finally, you can Select the near Behaviour of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text option, or have both.
This is where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like most tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Data in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click info, Subscriber development, automation analytics, and kind signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you special coverage for that effort.
This is where you’ll discover some statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into different areas of the report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Email’ tab also shows a click map, so It’s possible to see your subscribers interacted with your mails in relation to one another.
Reports for automations will also be Available under the’Automations’ tab, though I found these to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and many will find the available data more than sufficient to fulfill their needs.
What’s email advertising without a dashboard of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this particular review.
The great news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, then You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and easy to navigate — something that certainly can’t be said for each and every email advertising program.
After establishing your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These steps could be anything from sending an email, adding a Delay, a bubble break, or an action, like moving a subscriber or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I put together, where readers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within 7 days.
There are innumerable Possibilities in regards to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign because it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For Instance, there’s currently no automation for moving Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these activities can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into various classes that activate new automation workflows. It is just not as effective…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when creating new emails From the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email block to The workflow, you will be asked to add your subject line which then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the critique.
This time, but once you’ve created your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email address will be Loaded into your automation.
A Wonderful touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation cube, so it’s possible to find an idea of what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on newspaper, it is really much faster than what I am utilized to with other email marketing tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, you’ll probably find this a downgrade in performance.
It is quick enough for me, Personally, however I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there is one type of automation You will not find in MailerLite, also I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or measure ) based on the way Subscribers interact with the webpages on your site.
This Sort of behavioral targeting just is not available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Mailup
The Price of MailerLite is one of those tools biggest Selling points, and let us face it, most of us love a good deal.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding on your mails using this program, it’s still an wonderful alternative for those starting out.
And what about the premium plans?
It turns out, at around half of the Price of this rivalry generally, MailerLite is by far among the least expensive options on the industry. Plus, if you are ready to pay annually, you can also get a much better discount.
In fact, I haven’t been able to find anything that does the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of the email marketing tools The (very crowded) industry in recent years, and that’s no easy feat.
While it is not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you will seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking about giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you From the comments. Mailup
