If you’re really unhappy with the templates provided by Getresponse, there is also the choice of purchasing a template from a third party supplier such as Theme Forest.
Another thing worth pointing out seeing Getresponse’s templates is that the range of RSS-to-email software options are not so extensive (just 11 templates are provided – well short of the 700+ accessible for regular newsletters!) And some of them played up a bit for me when I tested them (2010). Getresponse was ahead of its competitors for quite some time with its responsive email layout performance, which automatically adjusts your e-newsletter’s template so that if a user is reading it onto a mobile device, the layout and fonts will be automatically optimised for the device in question.
Most competing products have caught up on this now, and offer responsive email templates, but Getresponse is better than most similar products as soon as it comes to displaying a responsive record of your e-newsletter – you just hit on a’mobile preview’ button for an instant snapshot of your email looks like on a smartphone (see picture right).

Customer Relationship Management
One of the most frustrating facets of utilizing many famous CRM tools is the need to export information to CSV and back to your email marketing tool as a way to do mailouts (or the need to export info from your email marketing tool into your CRM to add prospects to it).
So when I saw Getresponse recently introducing a brand new CRM feature in their plans I was intrigued – this could possibly do away with all that info exporting and importing, and keep everything neatly in one place.
Initially I was not that impressed with the Getresponse CRM tool since you can only use it to perform rather basic jobs: you could create sales pipelines, add contacts to these and track activity (emails, telephone calls etc.) with these contacts manually.
But recently Getresponse have upped their game somewhat on this particular front. The CRM is currently integrated with all of Getresponse’s email marketing functionality and you can add users into a CRM pipeline based on their action (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or activate autoresponders based on the addition of a new contact into a pipeline phase.
An example of how to use this functionality would be as follows:
You can add a contact to a specific point on a revenue pipeline based on the page of your website they finished a form on;
you could then send them a automated email tailored to this pipeline period a few days afterwards;
and dependent on the action they took with regard to that email (clicking on a particular link etc) you could automatically move them onto another stage of the pipeline and automatically invite them into a webinar.
It is very smart stuff, and that I can’t think of any email marketing product offering this kind of tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. For this type of functionality you normally need to appear at committed — and more expensive — CRM products such as Salesforce and Infusionsoft.
However, it is not all fantastic news on the CRM front there are a few big things missing out of Getresponse’s CRM attribute set.
The most glaring omission is e mail activity tracking. Additional CRM packages allow you to bcc a dropbox email address any time you send an email to some lead or client; doing this keeps a list of this communication from the contact’s history. There is now no method of doing so with the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an simple way to send one-to-one emails to leads or clients.

From a usability point of view this is extremely clunky and time consuming. You should just have the ability to put in a bargain right to a pipeline and then enter the contact information of your guide or customer at that point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is somewhat half-baked. But that said, it’s a new feature and the things it could perform on the automation aspect is impressive. I’m optimistic that this feature gets developed over time since done right, it is potentially a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the ability to sponsor webinars on the platform.
Given that webinars are generally utilized as a lead-generation tactic, the idea of having your email database along with your webinar tool under the exact same roof is very attractive.
The pricing is also very aggressive also compared to established webinar solutions. I really do have to pull Getresponse on one thing concerning deliverability however: to ensure a high deliverability speed, it is advisable to use a platform named DKIM email authentication. You can use DKIM with Getresponse – but just on the costlier Getresponse’Max’ programs.
Although I’ve not encountered any deliverability difficulties using the less costly plans, competing products do not force you to invest in a more expensive strategy to avail of this feature — it’d be good to see Getresponse becoming more generous here.

If you can get your head about it, and practice using it a little bit, it does result in a useful tool – it is only that the implementation of it could be rather better.
Also, as described above, the CRM tool could be better from a usability point of view — adding contacts to deals could be unnecessarily difficult.
The 30-day complimentary trial that Getresponse supplies is completely operational and the free trial isn’t contingent upon providing credit card details.
This helps you avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for this particular trial and today I am getting charged for a product that I do not use” scenario.
The only down side to the free trial is the fact that it restricts the amount of subscribers it is possible to send to 1000. It would be good if this could be raised a little, as it might help prospective users try out the tool in more’real world’ situations.

Additionally, it is worth pointing out that Mailchimp offers narrower pricing rings, meaning that based on how big your listing, it might occasionally be a slightly cheaper option than Getresponse.
At the database end of things, Getresponse’s pricing is really competitive too – you can host a database comprising 1,000 email addresses for $15 per month using Getresponse, compared to $29 with Aweber; $59 on Campaign Monitor (infinite send).
Mailchimp’s monthly fee for a 1,000 record database will be exactly the same as Getresponse’s; and Mad Mimi provides a slightly cheaper, if much less functional offering for $12 a month.
Two final things to be aware of on the pricing :
Some competing suppliers — especially Mailchimp – offer free accounts for users with a few records (but these do not offer the entire assortment of features that you get on a paid program ).
As stated before, if you are ready to pay upfront for 1 or 2 years, you can avail of substantial discounts the other competitors do not yet provide.

It’s also one of the most intriguing products of its kind – in that it provides email marketing, landing pages, CRM and webinars all under one roof. Some developments to Getresponse do need to be made nonetheless, particularly where the email programmer is concerned – its own drag and drop interface is much more fiddly and not as responsive than it should be. A good deal of improvements could be made to the data capture types also, especially for users wishing to display them on mobile devices.
And from what I gather from reader feedback, there are improvements that could be made to the service offering.
All in all though I rate Getresponse very highly – you get substantial bang for your buck with this item.
