Intro Litmus Test Email Marketing
When I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what would you say? Litmus Test Email Marketing
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online industries today, email advertising has been Dominated by the same large players for the previous ten years. Which means they get encouraged very deeply and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So today, in this short article, I’ll be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to find out if it really stands its ground against the big boys…

Like most email advertising providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your company name, site, Industry, address, company size, record size and also the kind of content you plan to send.
Then, you need to verify your Website (or domain ).
This is still part of this acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is related to that domain in order that they can email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed those Measures, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, assess your Website, and determine whether you are a good match for their services.
(In other words, they are making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and play with the attributes, but you won’t be able to send anything before accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
But while these steps are not perfect for getting started, it Does help stop malicious users from hurting everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to Deal with Nearly all your email marketing.
(We will get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But whether it is a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Produce Campaign’ will provide you several options.
– Regular effort: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Versions, such as subject line, from name and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t open your broadcast email, together with the choice of altering the subject line and email content.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to readers using your site’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few added options, the Majority of these will follow The exact same step-by-step procedure of a standard effort.
So let us walk you through it.
As Soon as You click to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Pick a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can change to the Templates tab and select from one of the pre-designed email templates — which will move you to the dragn’ drop editor by default.
At the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to select From which is a little on the low side, but the layouts are super modern.
And, of course, if you’d just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I will choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the blocks in the sidebar to include different Kinds of content to your email, including videos, merchandise columns, and societal connections.
After making your changes, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ choices where you are able to choose your classes or sections.
The advanced tab also allows one To develop segment-like rules , in case your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, before sending, you’ll get into the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, if that is immediately, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Litmus Test Email Marketing
Managing Your Clients
Having granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most important aspects of any email advertising software now.
Because highly personalized efforts Are Essential if You are looking to increase opens, clicks, and, most importantly, your conversions.
And while many providers Permit You to”label” readers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different approach.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically rules.
Your readers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified rules, and are automatically added or removed accordingly.
Here’s what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can even combine Rules, in addition to an alternate rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and also the difference in title, These act much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or via an Automation principle — which we’ll get to in a minute — and they don’t have any value aside from what you actually call them.
As you start to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, however, MailerLite delivers a hand in the event you’re unsure:
Fundamentally, groups are more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments permit you to lump multiple subscribers together according to a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it’s a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. Besides, they’re discretionary.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their own fields, such as title, business, and nation.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your readers along with Your custom field data in distinct columns… or can easily add these fields to your forms which will only apply to prospective readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I made and added into a form:
I will not go too much to the form Things here because I have a whole section on that below, but this is the strategy I’d recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field data from fresh Readers, you can pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I am barely scratching the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you know that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it’s fair to state MailerLite has their subscriber Management and personalization features on point. Litmus Test Email Marketing
If you’re not impressed with what you have seen so far, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, you will be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, it will offer a fantastic base to work from if, like most of us, you do not have that natural eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, however They finally do the same task; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further construct or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is already better than a few dedicated alternatives *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the basic building blocks, you can use elements like Hero segments, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it will not be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite really offers a Decent set of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there is a lot to cover .
Let us start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then put on your site to show it on specific pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer allows you To customize everything in the kind style, fields, background, title, enter fields and, of course, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which gives you a chance To visualize your backup in real-time.
It would’ve been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there’s more to some form than just its appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure how the Form works, such as adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There is even a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success page…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which will replace the embedded form also prevents users .
Last but surely not least, you Can check how your form displays on mobile by switching the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any layout changes , but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an Summary of this Embedded form but as I said before, you can also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of the installation process is identical, you will find A few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth selection, they do offer a good foundation to work from and the editor is just as easy to use for this form kind.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template requires me into a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new options under form types This time around:
Considering paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this level of control over popup types.
And, like before, you can play with the styling options to get it Matched up with your branding.
Finally, you can Select the close Behaviour of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
This is where most email Marketing platforms will render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Data in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation analytics, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific coverage for this effort.
This is where you’ll discover some more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading environment, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary user…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into different areas of the report to get a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see precisely how your readers interacted with your mails compared to another.
Reports for automations will also be Available under the’Automations’ tab, though I found to be less insightful than effort reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and most will get the available data more than enough to meet their needs.
What’s email advertising with no dash of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this review.
The good news? If you have used a visual workflow builder, then You’ll immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and easy to navigate — something which certainly can not be said for every email advertising program.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, adding a Delay, a bubble break, or an action, such as moving a contributor or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I put together, where readers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within seven days.
There are innumerable Possibilities in regards to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional components. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.. )
For example, there’s now no automation for moving Subscribers directly into a different automation.
That being said, the Majority of these activities can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into various classes that trigger new automation workflows. It’s just much less effective…. yet.
Another question of efficacy here is when creating new emails In the automation workflow builder.
After having an email block to The workflow, you’ll be asked to add your subject line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, however, once you’ve established your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you back into the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email address will probably be Loaded into your automation.
A Wonderful touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, so it’s possible to find an concept of what it contains at a glimpse.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on paper, it’s really much quicker than what I am utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you’ll likely find this a downgrade in functionality.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there is 1 type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and I think that it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on how Readers interact with all the pages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting just is not available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or intend to use, you may want to skip this one. Litmus Test Email Marketing
The Price of MailerLite is one of those tools largest Selling points, and let us face it, we all love a good bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All features (including premium) for as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding on your mails using this program, it is still an amazing option for those starting out.
And what about the premium plans?
It turns out, at approximately half of the Price of this competition on average, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the least expensive options available on the market. Plus, if you’re willing to pay yearly, you can also get a much better discount.
In fact, I haven’t been able to locate anything that does the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among the few marketing tools to disrupt The (very crowded) industry in recent years, which is no simple feat.
While it is not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
Thinking about giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you From the comments. Litmus Test Email Marketing
