Recently however, Getresponse’s feature set has evolved quite a bit, to the point at which it is becoming more of an’all-in-one’ marketing alternative.
In addition to email marketing, it now also provides webinar hosting, landing pages, and a few CRM (client relationship management) functionality.
We are going to discuss all these attributes in depth below, but first, let us look at pricing.
Getresponse’s attribute set is arguably one of the most comprehensive out there.
Not only does this provide all the crucial stuff you’d expect from an email advertising platform – list templates, hosting, autoresponders, analytics and so on, but as mentioned above, it’s been expanding the attribute set to the point at which it is morphing into an all-in-one / CRM-style marketing platform.
The question is whether Getresponse is a jack of all trades and master of none – let’s drill down into the key qualities to learn.
Up until quite recently Getresponse support was amongst the most comprehensive available for email marketing tools: the company offered phone support alongside live chat support, email support and various online tutorials / tools.
Regrettably, the telephone support has been discontinued. Instead you are going to have to use live chat (24/7) or email service. To be honest, many similar e-marketing platform suppliers only offer you these two channels – if phone support is a deal-breaker for you you might wish to consider Aweber, which still supplies it (you can read our Aweber review ).

Furthermore, there are tons of templates to choose from — over 500 — and they are introduced in easy-to-understand classes, therefore it’s generally pretty simple to locate a good starting point for a template and then edit it before you are happy with the design.
If you’re really not pleased with the templates offered by Getresponse, there is also the choice of buying a template by a third party provider such as Theme Forest.

Recently Getresponse launched a brand new version of their new autoresponder functionality, called’Marketing Automation.’

Landing page Builder
Online advertising campaigns that use landing pages will typically create far more leads if, rather than simply directing people to a (cluttered!) Site, they tip users to appealing’squeeze pages’ containing clear info and a clean, well-designed data capture form.
Getresponse offers something very beneficial in this regard that the majority of its rivals don’t: a landing page founder (and one that is mobile-friendly to boot).
Products such as Campaign Monitor and Aweber require you to make use of a third party (and paid-for) landing page creating tool such as Unbounce or Instapage; Mailchimp lately introduced a landing page functionality but it’s yet to become as sophisticated at Getresponse’s.
However, unless you’re on a Getresponse’Pro’,’Max’ or’Enterprise’ plan, the Getresponse landing page functionality is rather limited: you can just produce one landing page, that can only be displayed 1,000 times a month.
Additionally, and very importantly, you can’t use the landing page A/B testing performance on the least expensive Getresponse program (where the machine shows a sample of your users different versions of your landing page, calculates conversion speeds, and finally rolls out the top performing landing page mechanically ).
If you’re serious about landing pages – and they’re certainly a helpful attribute – then it is definitely worth considering one of the more expensive Getresponse plans.
You can purchase the Landing Pages attribute as an add-on to get an extra $15 per month, but quite frustratingly, although the add-on permits you to show an infinite number of landing pages to potential subscribers, it doesn’t consist of A/B testing.
Accordingly, if I was considering the Getresponse landing page functionality, I would not bother with this rather half-baked add-on: I’d just go for a few of the more expensive plans (which I guess is what Getresponse would like you to do) .
Getresponse was before its rivals for quite some time using its responsive email layout functionality, which automatically corrects your e-newsletter’s template so that when a user is reading it onto a mobile device, the design and fonts will be optimized for the device in question.
Most competing products have captured up on this today, and extend responsive email templates, but Getresponse is better than many similar goods when it comes to displaying a reactive record of your e-newsletter – you simply hit on a’mobile preview’ button for an instant snapshot of what your email looks like on a smartphone (see image right).

Customer Relationship Management
One of the most frustrating facets of utilizing many well-known CRM tools is that the need to export data to CSV and back into your email marketing tool as a way to do mailouts (or the need to export data from your email marketing tool in your CRM to include prospects to it).
When I saw Getresponse lately introducing a brand new CRM feature in their plans I was intrigued – that could potentially do away with all that data exporting and importing, and keep everything neatly in one area.
Initially I was not that impressed with all the Getresponse CRM tool as you could only use it in order to perform rather basic jobs: you can create sales pipelines, add contacts to them and monitor activity (emails, phone calls etc.) with these contacts manually.
But recently Getresponse have upped their video game a bit on this particular front. The CRM is currently integrated with all Getresponse’s email marketing functionality and you can add users into a CRM pipeline according to their activity (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or trigger autoresponders depending on the accession of a new contact to a pipeline phase.
An example of how to use this operation would be as follows:
You can add a contact to a particular stage on a revenue pipeline depending on the page of your website that they finished a form ;
you can then send a automated email tailored to that pipeline period a few days afterwards;
and dependent on the actions they took with regard to that email (clicking on a particular link ) you could automatically move them on another stage of the pipeline and invite invite them into a webinar.
It’s very smart stuff, and I can not think of any email advertising product offering such a tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. For this kind of performance you normally must look at committed — and more expensive — CRM products such as Salesforce and Infusionsoft.
However, it’s not all fantastic news about the CRM front there are some big things missing from Getresponse’s CRM attribute set.
The most glaring omission is e mail activity tracking. Other CRM packages permit you to bcc a dropbox email address whenever you send an email to a lead or client; doing so keeps a list of this communication in the contact’s history. There’s now no way of doing so with all the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an simple way to send one-to-one emails to leads or customers.
And strangely, if you click on a contact in a bargain pipeline, you can not see their contact action — i.e., the actions they’ve taken (open, clicks etc.) with regard to previous communications that you have delivered to your leads are not displayed. To see this, you have to go from the CRM section of Getresponse, hunt for your contact in the contacts section and then click in their details. But guess what? Doing this does not display their history.
Task management is non-existent also: Unlike committed CRM tools, there is no way to assign tasks to other group members.
Finally, adding contacts to a pipeline stage is difficult. You have to add contacts to a list , then go to the CRM pipeline, include a deal and search your lists to receive the contact you just added. From a usability standpoint this is extremely clunky and time consuming. You should just have the ability to add a bargain right to a pipeline and enter the contact information of your guide or customer at that point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is a bit half-baked. But that said, it’s a new attribute and the stuff it can do on the automation side is remarkable. I am optimistic that this feature becomes developed over time since done right, it’s potentially a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the ability to host webinars on the platform.
Given that webinars are usually used as a lead-generation tactic, the notion of getting your email database along with your webinar tool under the exact same roof is very appealing.
The pricing is also very aggressive also compared to based webinar solutions. Furthermore, Getresponse really gives you the deliverability rate of each message on your email analytics – that is something that I have not struck on rival products’ metrics. A thumbs up for this.
I really do need to pull Getresponse on one thing relating to deliverability however: to ensure a high deliverability speed, it is advisable to use a platform called DKIM email authentication. You can use DKIM with Getresponse – but only on the costlier Getresponse’Max’ programs.
Though I have not encountered any deliverability difficulties using the less costly plans, competing products do not force you to invest in a more expensive plan to avail of this feature — it’d be useful to see Getresponse being more generous here.
There are two approaches you can employ to add subscribers to a mailing list: using a’single opt-in’ or even a’double click’ process.
If you utilize one opt-in process, the person registering to your own mailing list is added to a mailing list the minute they hit the submit button on your sign up form.
With a double opt-in process, the person signing up to your record is sent via an email containing a confirmation link that s/he must click before being subscribed.
The most important benefit of a single sampling procedure is that it makes it really easy for users to subscribe to a mailing list; additionally, it generally increases conversion speed and therefore the amount of subscribers on your list. A dual opt-in process is better for verifying the folks subscribing to a list are using real email addresses and leads to cleaner data and more precise stats (because open rates etc. are calculated according to a list comprising just real email addresses).

Overall, Getresponse is really simple to use. It is certainly easy enough to perform all of the fundamentals: import contacts, create campaigns, setup autoresponders and check statistics and the interface is pretty intuitive and clean.
In terms of how it stacks up against its competitors in this regard, I would argue that Campaign Monitor is a little bit more user friendly, and Mailchimp includes a slicker user interface (though one which makes finding certain functionality a little bit tricky at times).
1 place I think that could be significantly better in the user-friendliness point of view is that the Getresponse e-newsletter editor.
Whilst its drag-and-drop approach does in theory provide an extremely flexible way to create blocks of articles and transfer them about an e-newsletter, in practice it’s fairly user friendly to use and may cause accidental deletion of material, or placement of it at the incorrect portion of the e-newsletter.
If you’re able to get your head about it, and practice using it a bit, it will result in a useful instrument – it is just that the execution of it could be rather better.
Also, as explained above, the CRM instrument might be far better from a usability point of view adding contacts to deals could be unnecessarily difficult.
The 30-day free trial which Getresponse provides is fully functional and the free trial isn’t contingent upon supplying credit card information.
This makes it possible to avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for that trial and now I am getting charged for a commodity I do not use” scenario.
The only down side to the free trial is that it limits the amount of readers you can send to to 1000. It would be useful if that could be raised a little, as it would help prospective users try the tool out in more’real world’ situations.

Mailchimp’s monthly fee to get a 1,000 recording database is the like Getresponse’s; and Mad Mimi provides a marginally more affordable, if less operational offering for $12 per month.
Two final things to be Conscious of about the pricing :
Some competing providers — especially Mailchimp – provide free account for users with a small number of documents (but these don’t offer the full assortment of features that you get on a paid plan).
As stated before, if you are ready to pay upfront for 1 or two years, you can avail of significant discounts the other competitors don’t yet provide.

It’s also among the most intriguing products of its kind – because it provides email marketing, landing pages, CRM and webinars all under one roof. It’s hard to consider any rival product that delivers this’all round’ proposition, and it is what proceeds to persuade us to use it to Style Factory’s email marketing.
Some improvements to Getresponse do need to be made however, especially where the email designer is concerned – its drag and drop interface is much more fiddly and less responsive than it ought to be.
