If I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what would you say? Goolara
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online industries now, email marketing has been Dominated by the same large players for the last ten years. Which means that they get encouraged very deeply and accomplish a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So now, in this short article, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to find out if it really stands its own ground against the big boys…

Like most email marketing providers these days, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the software.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information like your company name, website, Business, address, company size, list size and also the kind of content you plan to send.
Then, You Have to confirm your Website (or domain name).
This remains part of the acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is associated to this domain in order that they can email you a verification link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Measures, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Site, and determine whether you’re a good match for their service.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll still be Able to use the software to create campaigns and perform with the features, but you won’t have the ability to send anything until approved.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
But while these steps aren’t ideal for getting started, it Does help stop unscrupulous users from damaging everybody’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to handle Nearly all your email marketing.
(We’ll get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But whether it’s a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always a reason to send a more instant email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Produce Campaign’ will give you several options.
– Regular effort: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Versions, such as subject line, from title and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t open your broadcast email, together with the choice of changing the subject line and email content.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your website’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few added choices, most of these will follow The exact same step-by-step process of a normal campaign.
So let us walk you through it.
Once you click on to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Pick a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can switch to the Templates tab and choose from one of the pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor .
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to choose From which is a little on the low side, but the designs are super modern.
And, of course, if you would just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I will select the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Making viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the blocks in the sidebar to include distinct Types of content to your email, including videos, merchandise columns, and social links.
After making your adjustments, just click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ options where you are able to choose your groups or segments.
The tab also allows you To develop segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting isn’t quite right.
Finally, before sending, then you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, whether that is instantly, at a set time/date, or according to your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Goolara
Managing Your Clients
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most important aspects of any email marketing program now.
Because highly personalized efforts Are Essential if You’re searching to increase clicks, opens, and, most importantly, your conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”label” subscribers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different approach.
When you open up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically principles.
Your subscribers belong to a section only when they fulfill the Specified principles, and will be automatically added or eliminated accordingly.
Here is what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can also combine Principles, as well as another rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for groups, and also the difference in name, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or through an Automation rule — that we’ll get to in a moment — and they don’t have any value besides what you actually call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, but MailerLite offers a hand in the event you’re unsure:
Fundamentally, groups are much more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments permit you to lump multiple contributors together based on a frequent denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. Besides, they’re optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their particular fields, such as title, business, and country.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers along with Your custom field information in separate columns… or can easily add these fields to your forms which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added to a form:
I will not go too much into the form Things here since I have an entire section on this below, but this is the strategy I would recommend if you wished to use this attribute.
Again, once you’ve collected your custom field information from new Subscribers, you are able to pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I am barely scraping the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it’s important to know this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to say MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on stage. Goolara
If you’re not impressed with what you’ve seen so far, then maybe The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, you’ll be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Is not winning any awards, it does offer a fantastic base to work from if, like most people, you do not have that natural eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, though They ultimately do the identical task; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further construct or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and it is already better than a few dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero sections, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
It won’t be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all 3 kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite actually offers a Adequate set of form building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there’s a whole lot to cover here.
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then put on your site to show it on specific pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer allows you To customize everything in the kind style, fields, background, title, input fields and, of course, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To envision your own backup in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there is more to some form than just its appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure the way the Form functions, such as adding additional fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There’s even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And talking of the success page…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded form also prevents users .
Last but surely not least, you Can check how your form displays on cellular by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any design changes , but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an Summary of the Embedded form but like I said before, you may even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of this installation process is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive choice, they do offer a good base to work from and the editor is at least as simple to use for this form kind.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template takes me to a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new choices under form types Now around:
Contemplating paid tools such as Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup forms.
And, as before, you can play with the styling options to get it Matched up with your branding.
Last, you can choose the near Behavior of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
This is where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click info, Subscriber development, automation analytics, and kind signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you special reporting for this campaign.
This is where you’ll discover a few statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading environment, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into individual areas of this report to get a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also shows a click map, so It’s possible to see your readers interacted with your emails compared to one another.
Reports for automations are Available under the’Automations’ tab, even although I found to be less enlightening than effort reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and most will get the available statistics more than sufficient to fulfill their demands.
What is email marketing with no dash of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The good news? If you’ve used a visual workflow builder, then You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and easy to navigate — something which certainly can’t be said for each and every email advertising program.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a conditional split, or an act, such as moving a subscriber or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed when they don’t open my email within seven days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign because it lacks a number of the conditional components. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.)
For Instance, there’s currently no automation for moving Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these actions can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into various groups that trigger new automation workflows. It’s just much less effective…. yet.
Another question of efficiency here is when generating new emails From the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to add your topic line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the review.
This time, however, as Soon as You’ve created your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you straight back into the automations workflow rather than the usual sending alternatives.
Finally, your email address will probably be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation block, which means you can find an idea about what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on newspaper, it is actually much faster than what I’m utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, you will likely find this a downgrade in performance.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, however I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s one Kind of automation You will not find in MailerLite, and I think that it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or measure ) based on how Readers interact with the webpages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting only isn’t accessible MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Goolara
The Price of MailerLite is among those tools largest Selling points, and let us face it, most of us love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) to get up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding on your emails using this program, it’s still an wonderful alternative for those starting out.
And what about the top programs?
It turns out, at approximately half of the Cost of the competition generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the least expensive options available on the industry. Plus, if you are ready to pay annually, you can also get an even better discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to locate anything that does the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among those very few marketing tools to interrupt The (very crowded) sector in the last couple of years, and that’s no easy feat.
While it is not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking about giving it a twist? Let us know how it works for you From the remarks. Goolara
