When I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what would you say? Globase
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries today, email advertising continues to be Dominated by the identical big players for the last ten years. Which means that they get encouraged very deeply and accomplish a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the marketplace, inducing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So today, in this review, I’ll be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to see if it really stands its own ground against the big boys…

Like most email marketing providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the program.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information like your company name, website, Industry, address, business size, record size and even the kind of material you plan to send.
Then, You Have to confirm your Site (or domain ).
This is still part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is related to that domain in order that they can email you a confirmation link.
Once you’ve completed those Measures, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, assess your Site, and ascertain whether you’re a fantastic match for their service.
(In other words, they’re making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to use the software to make campaigns and play with the features, but you will not be able to send anything until accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
But while these steps are not perfect for getting started, it Does help stop unscrupulous users from damaging everybody’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to Deal with Nearly all your email marketing.
(We will get to automations shortly, do not worry.)
But if it’s a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always a reason to send a more instant email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Create Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular effort: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Variations, such as subject line, from title and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to subscribers who Do not open your broadcast email, together with the choice of changing the subject line and email articles.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your website’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few additional choices, the Majority of these will follow Exactly the exact same step-by-step process of a standard effort.
So let us walk you through it.
Once you click on to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Select a preferred editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can change to the Templates tab and choose from one of the pre-designed email templates — which will move you to the dragn’ drop editor .
In the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to select From which is a little on the low side, however, the designs are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you would just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I will choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to use, Making customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the cubes in the sidebar to add different Kinds of content to your email, including videos, product columns, and societal connections.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you will Be taken to the recipients’ choices where you can select your classes or segments.
The tab also allows one To develop segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, right before sending, you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, whether that’s immediately, at a set time/date, or according to your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Globase
Managing Your Subscribers
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably among The most important aspects of any email marketing program now.
Because highly personalized campaigns Are Essential if You are looking to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your own conversions.
And while most providers allow you to”tag” readers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different strategy.
When you start up your subscriber dash, you’ll notice two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially principles.
Your subscribers belong to a segment only when they fulfill the Specified principles, and will be automatically inserted or removed accordingly.
Here is what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice how you can even blend Principles, as well as another rule when the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for classes, and despite the difference in name, These behave much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or through an Automation rule — that we’ll get to in a moment — and they have no value besides what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, but MailerLite delivers a hand in the event you’re unsure:
Basically, groups are more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments permit you to bulge multiple contributors together based on a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. In any case, they are optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their own fields, such as title, business, and nation.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your readers along with Your custom field data in separate columns… or can easily add these fields to your types which will only apply to prospective subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added into a form:
I will not go too much into the form Things here because I have a whole section on this below, but this is the approach I’d recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field information from new Readers, you can pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I am barely scratching the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you know this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it is reasonable to state MailerLite has their contributor Management and personalization features on stage. Globase
If you’re not impressed by what you have seen so far, then perhaps The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Is not winning any awards, but it will offer a fantastic foundation to work from if, like most people, you do not have that pure eye for design.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all ultimately do the same task; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further construct or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and it is better than a few dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero sections, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
No, it will not be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite really Provides a Decent set of type building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a lot to cover here.
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then put on your site to show it on particular pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer allows you To personalize everything in the form style, fields, background, title, enter fields and, of course, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To envision your own backup in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there is more to a form than just its appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure how the Form functions, including adding additional fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There’s even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success page…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, That will replace the embedded kind and prevents users from redirecting.
Last but surely not least, you Can assess the way your form screens on mobile by shifting the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t be able to make any design changes , but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that is an overview of the Embedded form but as I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of the setup process is identical, you will find A few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive choice, they do provide a good foundation to work from and the editor is just as simple to use for this form kind.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template requires me to a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new options under form types Now around:
Considering paid tools such as Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this amount of control over popup forms.
And, like before, you can perform with the styling options to get it Matched up with your own branding.
Last, you can choose the near Behavior of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text choice, or have .
That is really where most email Marketing platforms will leave you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Statistics in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click info, Subscriber development, automation analytics, and kind signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific coverage for that effort.
This is where you’ll discover a few more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying environment, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary consumer…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into different areas of the report to get a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Mail’ tab also shows a click map, so It’s possible to see precisely how your readers interacted to another.
Reports for automations are also Available under the’Automations’ tab, even although I found to be less insightful than effort reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and many will find the available statistics more than sufficient to fulfill their needs.
What’s email marketing with no dash of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this review.
The good news? If you have used a visual workflow builder, You’ll immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and easy to navigate — something that certainly can not be said for every email marketing software.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding steps to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, including a Delay, a bubble break, or an act, like transferring a contributor or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I put together, where readers Are unsubscribed when they don’t open my email within seven days.
There are innumerable Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign since it lacks a number of the conditional components. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.. )
For example, there’s currently no automation for transferring Readers directly into another automation.
That being said, the Majority of these actions can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different groups that trigger new automation workflows. It is just much less efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficiency here is when generating new mails From the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email block to The workflow, you will be asked to add your subject line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking on the’Design email’ button will fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the review.
This time, however, once you’ve established your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you straight back to the automations workflow rather than the usual sending options.
Ultimately, your email address will be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, so it’s possible to find an concept about what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it is really much quicker than what I’m utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you have come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, you’ll probably find this a downgrade in performance.
It’s quick enough for me, Personally, however I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there is 1 type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and I think that it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or step) based on the way Subscribers interact with all the pages on your site.
This Sort of behavioral targeting just isn’t accessible MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you might want to skip this one. Globase
The cost of MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the tools largest Selling points, and let us face it, we all love a good bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) for up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your emails using this program, it’s still an wonderful alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the top plans?
It turns out, at approximately half the Price of this competition generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the least expensive options available on the industry. Plus, if you are willing to pay annually, you are also able to get an even greater discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to find anything that does exactly the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of those very few advertising tools The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of decades, which is no easy feat.
While it’s not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking about giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you In the comments. Globase
