Lately however, Getresponse’s feature set has evolved quite a bit, to the point at which it is getting more of an’all-in-one’ marketing solution.
Besides email advertising, it also provides webinar hosting, landing pages, and a few CRM (customer relationship management) functionality.
We’ll discuss all these features in depth below, but first, let us look in pricing.
Getresponse’s attribute set is possibly one of the most comprehensive on the market.
Not only does this provide all the crucial stuff you’d expect from an email marketing platform – list hosting, templates, autoresponders, analytics and so on, but as mentioned previously, it has recently been expanding the feature set to the point where it is morphing into an all-in-one / CRM-style advertising and marketing platform.
The question is whether Getresponse is a jack of all trades and master of not – let’s drill down to the crucial features to find out.
Up until very recently Getresponse service was one of the most comprehensive available for email advertising tools: the firm offered phone support alongside live chat support, email support and assorted online tutorials / resources.
Sadly, the telephone support has been discontinued. Instead you are going to have to use live chat (24/7) or email service. To be fair, most similar e-marketing platform suppliers only offer these two channels – if telephone service is a deal-breaker for you you might want to consider Aweber, which nonetheless supplies it (you can read our Aweber review here).

Getresponse provides some very comprehensive reporting and analytics options. You get all the Fundamentals of track – open rate, click-through, unsubscribe Prices and so on – but also to that there are some very nifty features Which Are worth a Specific mention, specifically:

On the plus side, the templates are extremely tweakable – you can change fonts, layouts and vision easily enough using the controls provided; and of course there is nothing to stop you simply designing your HTML email template and importing the code for it.
Additionally, you will find tons of templates to choose from — over 500 — and they’re introduced in easy-to-understand classes, so it is generally pretty simple to find a good starting point for a template and edit it until you’re happy with the plan.
If you are really not pleased with the templates offered by Getresponse, there is also the choice of buying a template from a third party supplier such as Theme Forest.
Another thing worth pointing out regarding Getresponse’s templates is the range of RSS-to-email applications options are not so extensive (just 11 templates are supplied – well short of the 700+ accessible for regular newsletters!) And some of them played a bit for me when I tested them (2010). I eventually found something that worked for me, but I think there are definitely a few improvements that could be made in this region. Landing page Builder
Online advertising campaigns that use landing pages will usually generate far more leads in the event, rather than simply directing people to a (cluttered!) Site, they point users to appealing’squeeze pages’ comprising clear info and a clean, well-designed data capture type.
Getresponse provides something very beneficial in this regard that the majority of its competitors do not: a landing page founder (and one that’s mobile-friendly to boot).
Products like Campaign Monitor and Aweber ask you to use a third party (and non invasive ) landing page generating tool like Unbounce or Instapage; Mailchimp lately introduced some landing page performance but it is yet to become sophisticated at Getresponse’s.
But unless you are on a Getresponse’Guru’,’Max’ or’Enterprise’ program, the Getresponse landing page functionality is rather limited: you can just create one landing page, that can only be displayed 1,000 times a month.
Also, and above all, you can not utilize the landing page A/B testing functionality on the cheapest Getresponse program (whereby the system indicates a sample of your customers different variations of your landing page, computes conversion rates, and ultimately rolls out the top performing landing page mechanically ).
If you’re serious about landing pages – plus they’re unquestionably a useful attribute – then it is definitely worth considering among the costlier Getresponse plans.

Customer Relationship Management
One of the most frustrating facets of using many famous CRM tools is that the need to export data to CSV and straight back to your email marketing instrument in order to perform mailouts (or the necessity to export info from your email marketing tool in your CRM to include leads to it).
When I watched Getresponse recently introducing a new CRM feature into their plans I had been intrigued – this could possibly do away with all that info exporting and importing, and keep everything neatly in one area.
Initially I was not that impressed with the Getresponse CRM tool since you could only use it to perform quite basic tasks: you could create sales pipelines, add contacts to them and track activity (mails, phone calls etc.) with those contacts manually.
But lately Getresponse have upped their video game somewhat on this front. The CRM is now integrated with all Getresponse’s email marketing operation and you can add users to a CRM pipeline according to their activity (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or trigger autoresponders based on the addition of a new contact to a pipeline phase.
An example of how you could use this functionality would be as follows:
You can add a contact to a specific stage on a sales pipeline depending on the page of your website that they finished a form on;
you can then send them a automated email tailored to this pipeline stage a few days later;
and dependent on the actions they took with regard to this email (clicking on a certain link ) you could automatically move them onto another phase of the pipeline and automatically invite them into a webinar.
It’s very clever stuff, and I can not think of any email advertising product offering such a tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. For this type of functionality you normally need to look at dedicated — and more expensive — CRM products like Salesforce and Infusionsoft.
However, it’s not all good news on the CRM front — there are a few big things missing out of Getresponse’s CRM attribute collection.
The most glaring omission is e mail activity tracking. Other CRM packages allow you to bcc a dropbox email address any time you send an email to a lead or customer; doing this keeps a record of this communication from the contact’s history. There’s now no method of doing so with all the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an easy way to send one-to-one mails to leads or clients.
And oddly, if you click a contact in a bargain pipeline, you can not see their contact action — i.e., the actions they’ve taken (open, clicks etc.) with regard to previous communications that you have delivered to your leads aren’t displayed. To observe this, you have to go from the CRM section of Getresponse, search for your own contact in the contacts section and click in their details. But guess what? Doing this doesn’t exhibit their deal history.
Task management is non-existent also: Unlike committed CRM tools, there is no way to assign tasks to other team members.
Eventually, adding contacts to a pipeline stage is tough. You have to add contacts to a list , then go to the CRM pipeline, add a deal and search your lists to receive the contact you just added. From a usability point of view this is very clunky and time consuming. You should just be able to add a bargain right to a pipeline and then enter the contact information of your guide or customer at the point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is a bit half-baked. But that said, it’s a new feature and the things it can do on the automation side is remarkable. I am optimistic that this feature gets developed over time because done right, it is possibly a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the ability to sponsor webinars on the stage.
Given that webinars are generally used as a lead-generation tactic, the notion of having your email database along with your webinar tool under the exact same roof is extremely appealing.
The pricing is also very competitive too by comparison to based webinar solutions. The email deliverability rate – the percentage of e-newsletters delivered that successfully hit inboxes – is always a very important point to look at when choosing an email marketing instrument.
Not all email advertising suppliers are that forthright about their deliverability rates; but Getresponse seems reasonably open about that, with this to say about it in their website:

Though I’ve not encountered any deliverability problems using the less costly plans, competing products do not force you to invest in a more expensive strategy to avail of the feature — it would be useful to see Getresponse being more generous here.
There are two methods you can employ to add subscribers to a mailing list: using a’single opt-in’ or even a’double opt-in’ process.
If you utilize one opt-in process, the person signing up to your mailing list is added to your mailing list the moment they hit the submit button on your sign up form.
With a double opt-in process, the person signing up to your list is sent via an email containing a confirmation link that s/he must click before being subscribed.

Whilst its drag-and-drop approach does in theory provide an extremely flexible way to make blocks of articles and transfer them about an e-newsletter, in practice it is fairly user friendly to use and may lead to accidental deletion of material, or positioning of it at the incorrect part of the e-newsletter.
If you’re able to get your head about it, and practice using it a bit, it does make for a helpful tool – it is only that the implementation of it might be somewhat better.
Additionally, as explained above, the CRM tool might be better from a usability point of view — adding contacts to deals could be unnecessarily difficult.
The 30-day free trial which Getresponse provides is fully functional and the free trial is not contingent upon supplying credit card information.
This helps you avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for that trial and today I’m getting charged for a product that I don’t use” scenario.
The only down side to the free trial is that it restricts the amount of readers you can send to 1000. It would be good if this could be increased a bit, as it would help potential users try out the tool in more’real-world’ scenarios.
