Recently however, Getresponse’s attribute set has developed quite a bit, to the point at which it is becoming more of an’all-purpose’ marketing solution.
In addition to email advertising, it also provides webinar hosting, landing pages, and some CRM (customer relationship management) functionality.
We’ll discuss all these features in depth below, but first, let us look in pricing.
Getresponse’s feature set is possibly among the most comprehensive out there.
Not only does this provide all of the key stuff you would expect from an email marketing platform – list hosting, templates, autoresponders, analytics and so on, but as mentioned previously, it has been expanding the feature set to the point at which it’s morphing into an all-in-one / CRM-style advertising and marketing platform.
The inquiry is if Getresponse is a jack of all trades and master of none – let’s drill down into the key qualities to find out.
Up until quite recently Getresponse support was amongst the most comprehensive available for email advertising tools: the firm offered phone service alongside live chat support, email support and various online tutorials / tools.
Sadly, the phone service has now been discontinued. Instead you are going to have to use live chat (24/7) or email support. To be fair, most similar e-marketing platform suppliers only offer both of these stations – if telephone service is a deal-breaker for you you may want to consider Aweber, which still supplies it (you can read our Aweber review ).
In terms of the quality of Getresponse support, I’ve never needed to use it quite often (a good thing) but when I have I’ve discovered it for a bit of a mixed bag (less of a fantastic thing). A number of those live chat support I have received was excellent, and I haven’t needed to wait too long to chat with an agent; the email service .

On the plus side, the templates are very tweakable – you can alter fonts, designs and vision easily enough using the controls supplied; and of course there’s nothing to prevent you designing your own HTML email template and importing the code for it.
Additionally, there are tons of templates to choose from — around 500 — and they are introduced in easy-to-understand classes, so it’s generally pretty simple to find a good starting point for a template and edit it before you are happy with the plan.
If you are really not pleased with the templates provided by Getresponse, there is also the option of purchasing a template from a third party provider such as Theme Forest.
Another thing worth pointing out seeing Getresponse’s templates is that the assortment of RSS-to-email software options are not so extensive (just 11 templates are supplied – well short of the 700+ available for routine newsletters!) And a few of them played up a bit for me when I tested them (2010). Autoresponders are e-newsletters that are delivered to your subscribers at intervals determined by you personally — you can set them up so that immediately after somebody signs up to a mailing list, they get a welcome message from the business; a week after they can get a discount offer for some of your goods or services; three weeks after they could receive an encouragement to accompany you on social networking. Getresponse’s autoresponder functionality is a key selling point – it provides one of the most extensive feature sets available.

This type of functionality goes far beyond what’s traditionally been on offer from autoresponders, and lets you make a user journey which can be customised to the nth degree.

Landing page Builder
Online advertising campaigns that use landing pages will typically create far more leads if, rather than simply directing individuals to a (cluttered!) Site, they point users to appealing’squeeze pages’ containing clear information and a clean, well-designed data capture type.
Getresponse offers something quite beneficial in this regard that the majority of its rivals do not: a landing page founder (and one that is mobile-friendly to boot).
Products such as Campaign Monitor and Aweber ask that you make use of a third party (and paid-for) landing page creating tool such as Unbounce or Instapage; Mailchimp lately introduced a landing page functionality but it is yet to become as sophisticated at Getresponse’s.
But unless you’re on a Getresponse’Guru’,’Max’ or’Enterprise’ program, the Getresponse landing page performance is fairly limited: you can just produce one landing page, that could only be displayed 1,000 times a month.
Additionally, and above all, you can’t utilize the landing page A/B testing performance on the least expensive Getresponse program (where the machine indicates a sample of your customers different variations of your landing page, calculates conversion rates, and finally rolls out the top performing landing page mechanically ).
If you are serious about landing pages – plus they are certainly a helpful feature – then it is definitely worth looking at one of the more expensive Getresponse plans.
You can buy the Landing Pages attribute as an add-on to get an extra $15 a month, however very frustratingly, although the add-on allows you to display an unlimited number of landing pages to potential subscribers, it does not consist of A/B testing.
Accordingly, if I was considering the Getresponse landing page functionality, I would not bother with this rather half-baked add-on: I would just go for a few of the pricier plans (which I guess is exactly what Getresponse would like one to do!) .

Customer Relationship Management
One of the most frustrating facets of utilizing many famous CRM tools is the need to export information to CSV and back into your email marketing instrument in order to do mailouts (or the need to export info from your email marketing tool in your CRM to include prospects to it).
So when I watched Getresponse lately introducing a brand new CRM attribute into their plans I had been intrigued – this could possibly eliminate all that info exporting and exporting, and keep everything neatly in one place.
Initially I wasn’t that impressed with the Getresponse CRM tool since you can only use it to carry out quite basic jobs: you can create sales pipelines, add contacts to them and monitor activity (mails, phone calls etc.) with those contacts manually.
But lately Getresponse have upped their game somewhat on this front. The CRM is currently integrated with all Getresponse’s email marketing functionality and you can add users to a CRM pipeline based on their action (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or trigger autoresponders depending on the addition of a new contact to a pipeline stage.
An example of how to use this operation is as follows:
It is possible to add a contact to a specific point on a sales pipeline based on the page of your site they finished a form on;
you can then send a automated email tailored to that pipeline stage a few days afterwards;
and based on the action they took in regards to that email (clicking on a certain link etc) you could automatically move them onto another phase of the pipeline and invite invite them to a webinar.
It is very smart stuff, and I can not think of any email marketing product offering this kind of tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. For this type of functionality you normally need to appear at dedicated — and more costly — CRM products such as Salesforce and Infusionsoft.
However, it’s not all fantastic news on the CRM front there are some big things missing from Getresponse’s CRM feature set.
The most glaring omission is email activity tracking. Other CRM packages allow you to bcc a dropbox email address whenever you send an email to a lead or customer; doing this keeps a record of the communication from the contact’s history. There is now no method of doing this with all the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an easy way to send one-to-one mails to prospects or customers.
And oddly, if you click a contact in a bargain pipeline, you can not see their contact activity — i.e., the actions they have taken (open, clicks etc.) with regard to previous communications which you’ve sent to your prospects aren’t displayed. To see this, you need to go from the CRM section of Getresponse, search for your contact in the contacts section and then click in their details. But guess what? Doing this doesn’t exhibit their deal history.
Task management is non-existent also: unlike committed CRM tools, there’s no way to assign tasks to other group members.
Finally, adding contacts into your pipeline stage is tough. You need to add contacts to a list , then visit the CRM pipeline, add a bargain and hunt your lists for the contact you just added. From a usability standpoint this is extremely clunky and time consuming. You should just be able to add a deal right to a pipeline and then enter the contact information of your guide or client at that point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is a bit half-baked. However, it is a new feature and the things it could do on the automation side is impressive. I am optimistic that this attribute gets developed over time because done right, it is potentially a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the ability to host webinars on the stage.
Given that webinars are generally used as a lead-generation tactic, the notion of getting your email database and your webinar tool under the exact same roof is extremely attractive.
The pricing is also very competitive too by comparison to established webinar solutions. For example, one of the leading webinar services, Gotowebinar, fees $199 a month to host webinars with up to 500 attendees; you can really do the same (and a great deal more) with Getresponse for $165 (so long as your list size is under 25,000).
With regard to attendee limits, the Getresponse’Pro’ plan allows you to host a webinar with around 100 participants; the’Max’ program’s limit is 500.
You might even buy webinars functionality as a add on to a cheaper plan: $40 per month buys you a 100 attendees limitation, $99 per month buys you a 500 attendees limit. It isn’t clear what your choices are if you will need to host bigger scale distributions compared to that however.

The email deliverability rate – the percentage of e-newsletters sent that successfully hit inboxes – is obviously an important point to look at when choosing an email marketing tool.
Not all email marketing suppliers are that forthright about their deliverability rates; but Getresponse seems reasonably open about that, with this to say about it in their own website:

Obviously you’re going to need to take the organization’s word for this, but assuming it is accurate, it is a fantastic speed and inspires confidence that the vast majority of emails that you send using Getresponse will reach their intended recipients.
Furthermore, Getresponse actually provides you the deliverability rate of every message on your email analytics – that is something I haven’t encountered on rival products’ metrics. A thumbs up for this.
I really do have to pull Getresponse on something relating to deliverability nevertheless: to guarantee a high deliverability speed, it is advisable to use a system called DKIM email authentication. You can use DKIM with Getresponse – but only on the more expensive Getresponse’Max’ plans.
Though I have not struck any deliverability difficulties utilizing the less costly plans, competing products do not force you to invest in a more expensive plan to avail of the feature — it’d be good to see Getresponse being more generous here.
There are two approaches you can use to add subscribers to a mailing list: using a’single opt-in’ or even a’double opt-in’ process.
If you utilize one opt-in procedure, the individual signing up to your own mailing list is added to your mailing list the moment they hit the submit button on your sign up form.
With a double opt-in process, the person registering to your record is sent via an email containing a confirmation link that s/he have to click before being subscribed.

Overall, Getresponse is pretty straightforward to use. It’s certainly easy enough to perform all the fundamentals: import contacts, create campaigns, setup autoresponders and check numbers and the interface is pretty clean and intuitive.
In terms of how it stacks up against its rivals in this respect, I’d argue that Campaign Monitor is a little bit more user friendly, and Mailchimp has a slicker user interface (although one which makes locating certain performance just a bit tricky at times).
One place I think that might be significantly better in the user-friendliness point of view is that the Getresponse e-newsletter editor.
Whilst its drag-and-drop strategy does in theory provide an extremely flexible approach to make blocks of content and move them around an e-newsletter, in practice it’s fairly clunky to use and may cause accidental deletion of material, or positioning of it at the incorrect part of the e-newsletter.
If you’re able to get your head around it, and practice using it a little bit, it will make for a useful tool – it is just that the execution of it could be somewhat better.
Also, as explained above, the CRM instrument might be far better from a usability point of view adding contacts to deals can be unnecessarily difficult.
The 30-day free trial that Getresponse supplies is fully operational and the free trial isn’t contingent upon providing credit card information.
This helps you avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for this particular trial and now I am getting charged for a commodity I don’t use” scenario.
The only down side to the free trial is the fact that it limits the number of readers you can send to to 1000. It would be useful if that could be increased a bit, as it might help prospective users try the tool out in more’real world’ situations.

Webinars – that functionality is not available at all around the’Email’ strategy and the number of webinar attendees is restricted for the’Guru’ and’Max’ programs at 100, 500 respectively (it is unclear what the limitation is about the’Enterprise’ program ).
Users – you can only have one user account on the’Email’ plan; by contrast you get 3 on’Guru’, 5 ‘Max’ and 10 on’Enterprise’.
Pricing Vs Competitors
Provided that you are happy to use one of those entry-level’Email’ programs, the pay-per-month Getresponse plans are on the whole cheaper than those supplied by many of its key competitors, especially if you’ve got a reasonably large number of email addresses onto your database.
For example, if you’ve got a mailing list containing between 9,000 and 10,000 documents which you wish to send an infinite number of mails each month to, you’ll find that hosting it using Getresponse prices $65 per month.

Decision Campaign Monitor’s pricing structure depends not only the amount of email addresses on your own database but on how many emails you send a month too. If you are delighted to limit the number of mails sent via Campaign Monitor (in the case above, to 50k emails), you can expect to pay a monthly charge of $89, still considerably higher than Getresponse’s.
The sole well-known service I could think of that comes in significantly cheaper is Mad Mimi, which costs $42 a month to sponsor up to 10,000 email addresses (note however that the functionality offered by Mad Mimi is nowhere near as broad as Getresponse’s or really the other products mentioned previously ).
Additionally, it is worth pointing out that Mailchimp offers thinner pricing bands, meaning that depending on the size of your list, it may occasionally be a slightly cheaper alternative than Getresponse.
At the smaller database end of things, Getresponse’s pricing is pretty competitive too – you can sponsor a database comprising 1,000 email addresses for $15 a month with Getresponse, compared to $29 with Aweber; $59 on Campaign Monitor (unlimited send).
Mailchimp’s monthly fee for a 1,000 recording database is exactly the like Getresponse’s; and Mad Mimi supplies a slightly cheaper, if much less functional offering for $12 a month.
Two final things to be aware of about the pricing :
Some competing suppliers — notably Mailchimp – provide completely free account for users with a small number of records (but these do not supply the entire range of features that you get on a paid plan).

Some developments to Getresponse do need to be made nonetheless, particularly where the email programmer is concerned – its own drag and drop interface is much more fiddly and not as responsive than it should be.
