Getresponse was before its competitors for quite a while with its responsive email design functionality, which automatically adjusts your e-newsletter’s template so that if a user is reading it onto a mobile device, the design and fonts will be optimized for the device in question.
Most competing products have captured up on this now, and offer responsive email templates, but Getresponse is far better than many similar products when it comes to displaying a reactive record of your e-newsletter – you simply hit on a’cellphone preview’ button to get an instant snapshot of your email looks like on a smartphone (see image right).

Among the most frustrating aspects of using many well-known CRM tools is that the necessity to export information to CSV and back to your email marketing tool as a way to perform mailouts (or the need to export data from your email marketing tool in your CRM to add prospects to it).
When I saw Getresponse recently introducing a brand new CRM attribute into their plans I was intrigued – that could potentially eliminate all that data exporting and exporting, and keep everything neatly in one place.
Initially I was not that impressed with the Getresponse CRM tool as you can only use it to carry out quite basic jobs: you can create sales pipelines, add contacts to these and track activity (emails, telephone calls etc.) with these contacts manually.
But lately Getresponse have upped their video game somewhat on this front. The CRM is currently integrated with all of Getresponse’s email marketing operation and you can add users to a CRM pipeline based on their activity (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or activate autoresponders based on the addition of a new contact into a pipeline phase.
An example of how to use this functionality would be as follows:
It is possible to add a contact to a particular point on a revenue pipeline depending on the page of your site they finished a form on;
you can then send them a automated email tailored to this pipeline period a couple of days afterwards;
and based on the actions they took in regards to that email (clicking on a particular link ) you can automatically move them onto another phase of the pipeline and invite invite them to a webinar.
It’s very clever stuff, and that I can’t think of any similar email marketing product offering this kind of tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. But, it is not all good news about the CRM front there are some big things missing from Getresponse’s CRM attribute set.
The most glaring omission is e mail activity tracking. Additional CRM packages permit you to bcc a dropbox email address whenever you send an email to some lead or client; doing this keeps a record of the communication in the contact’s history. There is currently no method of doing this together with the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an easy way to send one-to-one mails to leads or clients.
And oddly, if you click on a contact in a bargain pipeline, you can not see their contact action — i.e., the activities they have taken (open, clicks etc.) in regards to previous communications which you’ve delivered to your leads are not displayed. To see this, you need to go from the CRM section of Getresponse, hunt for your own contact in the contacts section and click in their details. But guess what? Task management is non-existent also: Unlike dedicated CRM tools, there’s no way to assign tasks to other team members.
Eventually, adding contacts into your pipeline stage is difficult. You need to add contacts to a list first, then go to the CRM pipeline, add a bargain and search your lists to receive the contact you just added. From a usability standpoint this is very clunky and time consuming. You should just have the ability to add a bargain directly to a pipeline and then input the contact information of your lead or customer at that point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is somewhat half-baked. But that said, it is a new attribute and the stuff it could do on the automation aspect is impressive. I am optimistic that this feature gets developed over time since done right, it is potentially a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the ability to host webinars on the stage.
Given that webinars are generally utilized as a lead-generation tactic, the idea of getting your email database along with your webinar tool under the exact same roof is very attractive.

Clearly you’re going to have to take the company’s term for this, but supposing it is accurate, it’s a good speed and inspires confidence that the vast majority of emails that you send using Getresponse will achieve their intended recipients.
What’s more, Getresponse actually provides you the deliverability rate of every message in your email analytics – this is something that I have not encountered on rival goods’ metrics. A thumbs up for it.
I really do have to pull Getresponse on one thing concerning deliverability however: to guarantee a high deliverability speed, it is advisable to use a system named DKIM email authentication. You can use DKIM with Getresponse – but only on the more expensive Getresponse’Max’ programs.
Though I’ve not encountered any deliverability difficulties using the less costly plans, competing products don’t make you invest in a more expensive plan to avail of the feature — it’d be good to see Getresponse becoming more generous here.
There are two methods you can use to add subscribers to a mailing list: using a’only opt-in’ or a’double click’ process.
If you use use one opt-in process, the individual signing up to your mailing list is added to your mailing list the minute they hit the submit button on your sign up form.
Using a double opt-in process, the individual registering to your list is sent an email containing a confirmation link that s/he must click before being subscribed.
The main benefit of a single sampling procedure is that it makes it very simple for users to sign up for a mailing list; it also generally increases conversion rate and therefore the number of readers on your record. A dual opt-in process is best for verifying the folks subscribing to your list are using actual email addresses and leads to cleaner information and more precise stats (because receptive rates etc. ) are calculated according to a list comprising just email addresses).

You are probably thinking that all this sounds quite fine — but to be honest, I think there is a lot of room for improvement with regard to Getresponse form templates.
For a start, they’re not responsive (i.e., they won’t resize themselves automatically to suit the device they are being watched on).
Additionally, no controllers are provided by Getresponse to change forms off or on on particular devices or individual pages of your website. Whilst its drag-and-drop strategy does in theory provide an extremely flexible approach to create blocks of content and transfer them about an e-newsletter, in practice it’s quite clunky to use and can lead to accidental deletion of content, or placement of it at the wrong part of the e-newsletter.
If you’re able to get your head about it, and practice using it a bit, it will make for a helpful tool – it is just that the execution of it could be somewhat better.
Additionally, as described above, the CRM instrument might be better from a usability point of view adding contacts to deals could be difficult.
The 30-day complimentary trial that Getresponse provides is completely functional and the free trial isn’t contingent upon providing credit card details.
This helps you avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for that trial and today I’m getting charged for a product that I do not use” scenario.
The only down side to this free trial is that it limits the number of subscribers it is possible to send to 1000. It would be useful if that could be increased a bit, as it might help potential users try the tool out in more’real world’ scenarios.

It’s also worth pointing out that Mailchimp offers thinner pricing bands, meaning that depending on the size of your list, it might occasionally be a slightly cheaper alternative than Getresponse.
In the database end of things, Getresponse’s pricing is really competitive too – you can host a database comprising 1,000 email addresses for $15 per month with Getresponse, compared to $29 with Aweber; $59 on Campaign Monitor (infinite send).
Mailchimp’s monthly fee for a 1,000 recording database is the same as Getresponse’s; and Mad Mimi supplies a slightly cheaper, if less operational offering for $12 a month.
Two final things to be aware of on the pricing :
Some competing suppliers — notably Mailchimp – offer free accounts for users with a small number of documents (but these don’t offer the full assortment of features that you get on a paid program ).
