When I asked you to name an email Marketing instrument, what could you say? Gartner Email Marketing Magic Quadrant 2016
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online businesses now, email advertising continues to be Dominated by the identical big players for the last decade. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the marketplace, inducing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.

Like most email marketing providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, website, Industry, address, company size, list size and also the type of material you plan to send.
Then, you need to confirm your Website (or domain name).
This remains part of the acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to this domain so they could email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Steps, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, assess your Site, and ascertain whether you’re a good fit for their service.
(Quite simply, they are making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll still be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and play with the features, but you won’t be able to send anything until approved.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
But while these measures are not ideal for getting started, it Does help prevent malicious users from hurting everybody’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to handle Nearly all your email marketing.
(We will get to automations shortly, do not worry.)
But if it’s a new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always a reason to send a more instant email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Create Campaign’ will provide you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Versions, including subject line, from name and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to subscribers who Do not open your broadcast email, with the choice of altering the subject line and email articles.
– RSS campaign: Create a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your site’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few added choices, the Majority of these will follow The same step-by-step process of a standard effort.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your campaign, you’ll be asked to Select a preferred editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can switch to the Templates tab and select from one of the pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor by default.
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to select From which is somewhat on the low side, however, the layouts are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you’d just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll select the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the cubes in the sidebar to include distinct Types of articles to your email, including videos, product columns, and societal links.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ choices where you can select your groups or segments.
The tab also allows one To build segment-like rules , in the event your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, right before sending, you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, whether that’s instantly, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Gartner Email Marketing Magic Quadrant 2016
Managing Your Subscribers
Having granular control over your readers is arguably among The most essential aspects of any email marketing program today.
Because highly personalized campaigns Are Essential if You’re looking to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”label” readers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different approach.
When you open up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially rules.
Your readers belong to a section only when they meet the Specified rules, and will be automatically inserted or removed accordingly.
Here’s what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can also blend Principles, in addition to another rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and also the difference in name, These behave much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are updated manually or through an Automation principle — which we will get into in a minute — and they have no value aside from what you actually call them.
As you start to use this stage, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite offers a hand in case you’re uncertain:
Basically, groups are much more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple contributors together based on a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I will admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. Besides, they are discretionary.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own areas, such as title, business, and country.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers together with Your custom field information in distinct columns… or can simply add these fields to a types which will only apply to future readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I created and added to a form:
I won’t go too much to the shape Things here because I have a whole section on this below, but this is the strategy I’d recommend if you wanted to use this attribute.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field information from fresh Subscribers, you are able to pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I am barely scraping the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you understand that this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to say MailerLite has their contributor Management and personalization features on point. Gartner Email Marketing Magic Quadrant 2016
If you are not impressed with what you’ve seen so far, then maybe The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you’ll be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Isn’t winning any awards, it will offer a fantastic foundation to work from if, like most people, you do not have that pure eye for design.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, however They all ultimately do the identical job; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is already better than a few dedicated alternatives *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the basic building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it won’t be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually offers a Adequate set of type building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a lot to cover here.
Let’s begin with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to show it on specific pages.
Despite beginning super basic, the form designer allows you To personalize everything in the form style, fields, background, title, input fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which gives you a chance To envision your own backup in real time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there’s more to a form than just its physical appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure the way the Form works, such as adding additional fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There’s a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And talking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, That will replace the embedded form also prevents users .
Last but surely not least, you Can check how your form screens on cellular by switching the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of the Embedded form but like I said before, you can also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of the setup process is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do offer a good foundation to work from and the editor is just as easy to use for this form type.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template requires me to a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new options under form types Now around:
Contemplating paid programs such as Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to observe this level of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can play the styling options to get it Matched up with your branding.
Finally, you can choose the near Behaviour of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text option, or have both.
That is where most email Marketing platforms will leave you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Statistics in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber development, automation stats, and form signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you specific reporting for that effort.
This is where you’ll discover a few more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying environment, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into individual areas of this report to get a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also shows a click map, so It’s possible to see how your readers interacted with your mails in relation to one another.
Reports for automations will also be Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, even although I found to be less enlightening than effort reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and most will find the available statistics more than sufficient to meet their demands.
What’s email marketing with no dash of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this review.
The great news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, then You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and simple to navigate — something which certainly can not be said for every email advertising software.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding steps to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, including a Postpone, a bubble break, or an act, such as transferring a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed when they do not open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign since it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s currently no automation for transferring Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these actions can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into different groups that activate new automation workflows. It’s simply much less efficient…. yet.
Another question of efficacy here is when creating new emails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email block to The workflow, you will be asked to add your subject line which appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the typical campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the review.
This time, however, as Soon as You’ve created your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you back into the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email address will be Loaded into your automation.
A nice touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation cube, so you can find an concept about what it contains at a glimpse.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on paper, it is actually much quicker than what I’m used to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you will likely find this a downgrade in functionality.
It’s fast enough for me, Personally, however I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s 1 type of automation You will not find in MailerLite, also that I think that it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on the way Readers interact with all the pages on your website.
This kind of behavioral targeting just isn’t accessible MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or plan to utilize, you might want to skip this one. Gartner Email Marketing Magic Quadrant 2016
The Price of MailerLite is among those tools biggest Selling points, and let’s face it, most of us love a good deal.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All features (including premium) for up to 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding on your emails using this program, it is still an wonderful option for those starting out.
And what about the top plans?
It ends up, at approximately half the Cost of the competition generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the cheapest options available on the industry. Additionally, if you are willing to pay annually, you can also get a much greater discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to locate anything that does exactly the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among the very few advertising tools The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of years, and that’s no easy feat.
While it’s not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
All in all, I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
