Recently however, Getresponse’s attribute set has evolved quite a bit, to the point at which it is getting more of an’all-purpose’ marketing solution.

Getresponse’s feature set is arguably among the most comprehensive on the market.
Not only does it provide all the crucial stuff you’d expect from an email advertising platform – list templates, hosting, autoresponders, analytics and so forth, but as mentioned above, it’s recently been expanding the attribute set to the point at which it’s morphing into an all-in-one / CRM-style marketing platform.
The question is whether Getresponse is a jack of all trades and master of none – let’s drill down to the key qualities to find out.
Up until quite recently Getresponse support was one of the most comprehensive available for email marketing tools: the firm offered phone service alongside live chat support, email service and assorted online tutorials / resources.
Sadly, the phone service has now been discontinued. Instead you are going to need to use live chat (24/7) or email support. To be honest, many similar e-marketing platform suppliers only offer both of these stations – if telephone service is a deal-breaker for you you might wish to contemplate Aweber, which nonetheless provides it (you can read our Aweber review here).
Concerning the quality of Getresponse service, I have not had to use it quite often (a good thing) but once I’ve I have discovered it to be a bit of a mixed bag (less of a good thing). Getresponse offers some very comprehensive analytics and reporting options. You get all the basics of track – open speed, click-through, unsubscribe rates and so on – but in addition to that you will find some very nifty features Which Are worth a Specific mention, specifically:
‘one-click segmentation’: the option to spot people who didn’t participate with an e-newsletter that you sent and put them in a section of subscribers that you may then email again with a different version of the e-newsletter
‘metrics over time’: you can find out exactly when most of your subscribers take action in your emails, and period your prospective mailouts based on this info

So far so good with Getresponse, but when it comes to templates, Getresponse arguably drops down a little.
Regrettably, the templates provided out of the box seem a bit dated; they are not as attractive as those provided by Mailchimp or even Campaign Monitor (and I slightly prefer Aweber’s offering here also ).
On the plus side, the templates are extremely tweakable – you can change fonts, designs and vision easily enough using the controls provided; and of course there’s nothing to prevent you simply designing your own HTML email template and minding the code for it.
Furthermore, you will find tons of templates to choose from — over 500 — and they’re presented in easy-to-understand classes, therefore it is generally pretty straightforward to find a good starting point to get a template and edit it before you’re happy with the plan.
If you are really not pleased with the templates provided by Getresponse, there’s also the option of buying a template by a third party provider such as Theme Forest.
Another thing worth pointing out seeing Getresponse’s templates is that the assortment of RSS-to-email applications options are not very extensive (just 11 templates are supplied – well short of the 700+ available for routine newsletters!) And a few of them played a bit for me when I tested them (2010). I finally found something that worked for me, but I think that there are definitely a few improvements which could be created in this region. Free Autoresponder Script
Autoresponders are e-newsletters that are delivered to your subscribers at intervals depending on you — you can set them up so that immediately after someone signs up to a mailing list, they receive a welcome message from the company; a week later they can receive a discount deal for a number of your goods or services; three weeks later they could obtain an encouragement to accompany you on social networking. Getresponse’s autoresponder functionality is a key selling point – it offers one of the most extensive feature sets available.

Recently Getresponse launched a new version of their new autoresponder functionality, called’Marketing Automation.’

This kind of performance goes far beyond what has traditionally been available from autoresponders, and lets you make an individual journey that may be customised to the nth degree.

Landing page Builder
Online advertising campaigns that make use of landing pages will typically generate far more leads in the event, rather than simply directing people to a (cluttered!) Site, they point users to appealing’squeeze pages’ containing clear info and a clean, well-designed data capture form.
Getresponse provides something quite useful in this regard that the majority of its rivals do not: a landing page founder (and one that’s mobile-friendly to boot).
Products such as Campaign Monitor and Aweber ask you to use a third party (and non invasive ) landing page creating tool such as Unbounce or Instapage; Mailchimp recently introduced a landing page functionality but it is yet to become as sophisticated at Getresponse’s.
However, unless you’re on a Getresponse’Pro’,’Max’ or’Enterprise’ plan, the Getresponse landing page functionality is rather limited: you can just create 1 landing page, that could simply be displayed 1,000 times per month.
Also, and very importantly, you can not use the landing page A/B testing functionality on the least expensive Getresponse program (where the system indicates a sample of your customers different versions of your landing page, computes conversion rates, and finally rolls out the best performing landing page automatically).
If you are serious about landing pages – plus they’re unquestionably a helpful attribute – then it’s definitely worth considering among the more expensive Getresponse plans.
You can purchase the Landing Pages feature as an add-on to get an additional $15 per month, however quite frustratingly, even though the add-on permits you to display an unlimited amount of landing pages to prospective subscribers, it does not include A/B testing.
Accordingly, if I had been interested in the Getresponse landing page functionality, I wouldn’t bother with this fairly half-baked add-on: I would just go for a few of the more expensive plans (which I guess is exactly what Getresponse would like one to do) .
Getresponse was before its rivals for quite a while using its responsive email design performance, which automatically adjusts your e-newsletter’s template so that if an individual is reading it on a mobile device, the design and fonts will be automatically optimised for the device in question.
Most competing products have captured up on this now, and extend responsive email templates, but Getresponse is better than most similar goods as soon as it comes to displaying a responsive record of your e-newsletter – you simply hit a’mobile preview’ button for an instant snapshot of your email looks like on a smartphone (see image right).

Customer Relationship Management
Among the most frustrating aspects of using many well-known CRM tools is that the need to export information to CSV and back to your email marketing tool as a way to do mailouts (or the need to export data from the email marketing tool in your CRM to add prospects to it).
So when I saw Getresponse recently introducing a brand new CRM feature in their plans I had been intrigued – this could possibly eliminate all that info exporting and importing, and keep everything neatly in one area.
Initially I was not that impressed with all the Getresponse CRM tool as you can only use it to perform rather basic jobs: you can create sales pipelines, add contacts to them and track activity (emails, telephone calls etc.) with those contacts manually.
But lately Getresponse have upped their game a bit on this particular front. The CRM is currently integrated with all of Getresponse’s email marketing operation and you can add users to a CRM pipeline based on their action (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or trigger autoresponders depending on the addition of a new contact to a pipeline stage.
An example of how to use this functionality is as follows:
It is possible to add a contact to a specific point on a revenue pipeline depending on the page of your website that they finished a form ;
you can then send a automated email tailored to that pipeline stage a few days later;
and based on the action they took in regards to this email (clicking on a particular link etc) you can automatically move them onto another phase of the pipeline and automatically invite them to a webinar.
It is very smart stuff, and that I can’t think of any similar email marketing product offering such a tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. For this kind of functionality you normally need to look at dedicated — and more expensive — CRM products like Salesforce and Infusionsoft.
But, it’s not all good news on the CRM front — there are a few big things missing out of Getresponse’s CRM attribute set.
The most glaring omission is email activity monitoring. Additional CRM packages permit you to bcc a dropbox email address whenever you send an email to a lead or client; doing so keeps a list of this communication in the contact’s history. There is currently no way of doing so together with all the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an simple way to send one-to-one emails to prospects or customers.
And strangely, when you click on a contact in a bargain pipeline, you can not see their contact action — i.e., the actions they’ve taken (open, clicks etc.) with regard to previous communications that you have delivered to your leads are not displayed. To see this, you have to go out of the CRM part of Getresponse, search for your own contact in the contacts section and then click in their details. But guess what? Doing so doesn’t exhibit their deal history.
Task management is non-existent too: unlike committed CRM tools, there is no way to assign tasks to other team members.
Eventually, adding contacts into your pipeline stage is tough. You have to add contacts to a list , then go to the CRM pipeline, include a deal and hunt your lists for the contact you just added. From a usability standpoint this is very clunky and time consuming. You should just have the ability to put in a deal right to a pipeline and then input the contact details of your guide or customer at that point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is somewhat half-baked. However, it is a new attribute and the stuff it can perform on the automation aspect is remarkable. I am optimistic that this attribute gets developed over time because done right, it is possibly a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the ability to host webinars on the stage.
Given that webinars are usually used as a lead-generation tactic, the idea of getting your email database along with your webinar tool under precisely the same roof is very appealing.
The pricing is also very competitive too compared to based webinar solutions. For example, among the primary webinar providers, Gotowebinar, fees $199 a month to host webinars with as much as 500 attendees; you can actually do exactly the same (plus a whole lot more) with Getresponse for $165 (so long as your listing size is below 25,000).
With respect to attendee limits, the Getresponse’Guru’ program allows you to host a webinar with around 100 participants; the’Max’ plan’s limit is 500.
You can even purchase webinars functionality as a add on to a more affordable plan: $40 per month buys you a 100 attendees limit, $99 per month buys you a 500 attendees restrict. It’s not clear what your choices are if you need to host larger scale distributions compared to that however.

Ultimately webinar functionality is potentially an extremely helpful feature to have sitting on your e-marketing arsenal and its addition as a feature gives Getresponse a very significant advantage over its key rivals, especially when you consider you could link it in with a built-in CRM tool (more about that in a moment). The email deliverability rate – the percentage of e-newsletters sent that successfully reach inboxes – is always an important point to look at when choosing an email marketing instrument.
Not all email advertising providers are that forthright in their deliverability rates; however, Getresponse seems reasonably open about that, with this to say about it on their site:
At GetResponse we are often asked about the quality of the deliverability rate. Since deliverability is dependent upon many things, including the content of your messages, the deliverability rate could vary for every mailing. For all our clients collectively, however, we are pleased to say our overall deliverability rate now stands at 99%.
Obviously you’re going to have to choose the company’s term for this, but supposing it is true, it is a fantastic rate and inspires confidence that the huge majority of emails that you send using Getresponse will reach their receivers.
Furthermore, Getresponse really provides you the deliverability rate of each message on your email analytics – that is something that I have not struck on competing goods’ metrics. A thumbs up for it.
I do have to pull Getresponse on one thing relating to deliverability nevertheless: to guarantee a high deliverability speed, it is advisable to use a platform called DKIM email authentication. You can use DKIM using Getresponse – but only on the costlier Getresponse’Max’ plans.
Although I have not encountered any deliverability problems utilizing the cheaper plans, competing goods do not make you invest in a more expensive strategy to avail of the feature — it’d be useful to see Getresponse becoming more generous here.
There are two methods you can employ to add subscribers to a mailing list: using a’only opt-in’ or a’double opt-in’ process.
If you use use a single opt-in procedure, the person registering to your own mailing list is added to a mailing list the moment they hit the submit button on your sign up form.
With a double opt-in process, the individual registering to your record is sent an email containing a confirmation link that s/he must click before being subscribed.
The main benefit of a single opt-in process is that it makes it very easy for users to subscribe to your mailing list; it also generally increases conversion rate and therefore the number of readers on your record. A double opt-in process is better for verifying the folks subscribing to a list are using real email addresses and leads to cleaner data and more accurate stats (because receptive rates etc. ) are calculated according to a list containing just email addresses).
The fantastic news here is that Getresponse permits you to take advantage of either opt-in approach – this isn’t true with all competing goods. So a thumbs up for Getresponse for being flexible on this.
You’re probably thinking that this sounds quite good — but to tell the truth, I think there’s a lot of room for advancement with respect to Getresponse kind templates.
For a start, they’re not responsive (i.e., they won’t resize themselves automatically to suit the device they are being viewed on).
Furthermore, no controls are offered by Getresponse to change forms on or off on specific devices or individual pages of your website. At the light of Google’s new strategy to pop-ups (where sites can have a hit in search results if they exhibit’intrusive interstitials’ on mobile devices) this is a small concern.
To get around this, I generally avoid using Getresponse form templates, and make do with HTML embeded forms that I style myself, and also for popups I connect my Getresponse to some growth-hacking instrument called Sumo (that enables me to change pop-ups off for mobile users, in addition to display forms exactly as I’d like to and on the pages I want). Overall, Getresponse is pretty straightforward to use. It’s certainly easy enough to do all the basics: import contacts, create campaigns, setup autoresponders and check numbers and the interface is pretty intuitive and clean.
With regards to how it stacks up against its rivals in this regard, I’d assert that Campaign Monitor is a tiny bit more user friendly, and Mailchimp includes a slicker user interface (although one which makes finding certain performance a bit tricky at times).
1 place I think that could be significantly better from a user-friendliness standpoint is that the Getresponse e-newsletter editor.
Whilst its drag-and-drop strategy does in theory provide an extremely flexible way to make blocks of content and move them around an e-newsletter, in practice it is quite user friendly to use and can lead to accidental deletion of material, or placement of it at the wrong portion of the e-newsletter.
If you’re able to get your head about it, and practice using it a bit, it does result in a helpful tool – it’s just that the execution of it could be somewhat better.
Additionally, as explained above, the CRM tool could be better from a usability point of view — adding contacts to deals could be difficult.
The 30-day free trial that Getresponse supplies is completely operational and the free trial isn’t contingent upon providing credit card details.
This helps you avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for that trial and today I’m getting charged for a product I do not use” scenario.
The only down side to this free trial is the fact that it restricts the amount of subscribers you can send to 1000. It would be useful if this could be increased a little, as it would help prospective users try out the tool in more’real world’ situations.

There are a number of differences between the’Email’,’Pro’ and’Max’ programs but for me the main ones are:
CRM – Getresponse provides a client relationship manager tool on its’Pro’ plans up
landing pages – you can only avail of landing pages that allow split testing and unlimited views if you are on a’Guru’ program or greater
Webinars – this functionality isn’t accessible at all on the’Email’ plan and the amount of webinar attendees is restricted for the’Guru’ and’Max’ programs at 100, 500 respectively (it’s unclear what the limit is about the’Enterprise’ program ).
Users – you can only have one user account on the’Email’ plan; by comparison you get 3 on’Guru’, 5 ‘Max’ and 10 on’Enterprise’.
Pricing Vs Competitors
Provided that you’re pleased to use one of the entry-level’Email’ plans, the pay-per-month Getresponse plans are on the whole more affordable than those provided by many of its key competitors, particularly in case you’ve got a reasonably high number of email addresses on your own database.
For example, if you have a mailing list containing between 9,000 and 10,000 records which you want to send an unlimited number of emails per month to, you’ll find that hosting it using Getresponse costs $65 monthly.

* Campaign Monitor’s pricing structure depends not just the number of email addresses in your own database however on the number of emails you send per month too. If you’re happy to limit the number of mails sent via Campaign Monitor (in the case above, to 50k emails), you can expect to pay a monthly charge of $89, nevertheless considerably higher than Getresponse’s.
The only well-known service that I can think of that comes from significantly more affordable is Mad Mimi, which costs $42 per month to host up to 10,000 email addresses (note however that the functionality provided by Mad Mimi is nowhere near as extensive as Getresponse’s or really the other products mentioned previously ).
Additionally, it is worth pointing out that Mailchimp offers thinner pricing rings, meaning that depending on how big your list, it might sometimes be a slightly cheaper option than Getresponse.
In the smaller database end of things, Getresponse’s pricing is really competitive too – you can host a database comprising 1,000 email addresses for $15 a month using Getresponse, compared to $29 with Aweber; $59 on Campaign Monitor (unlimited send).
Mailchimp’s monthly fee for a 1,000 record database is exactly the like Getresponse’s; and Mad Mimi supplies a marginally more affordable, if much less functional offering for $12 per month.
Two final things to be Conscious of on the pricing front:
Some competing providers — notably Mailchimp – provide completely free accounts for users that have a few documents (but these do not supply the entire range of features that you get on a paid plan).
As stated before, if you’re prepared to pay upfront for 1 or two years, you can avail of significant discounts the other competitors don’t yet supply.

Getresponse represents among the more cost-effective tactics to host and speak with an email database.
It’s also one of the most intriguing products of its type – in that it provides email marketing, landing pages, CRM and webinars all under a single roof. It’s hard to consider any competing product that delivers this’all around’ proposal, and it is what proceeds to persuade us to utilize it for Style Factory’s email marketing.
Some improvements to Getresponse do need to be made nonetheless, especially where the email designer is concerned – its drag and drop interface is more fiddly and less responsive than it should be. A good deal of improvements can be made into the data capture forms too, particularly for consumers wanting to exhibit them on mobile devices.
And from what I gather from reader opinions, there are improvements that could be made to the support offering.

It offers a very flexible approach to data segmentation – more flexible than many competing products.
It permits you to add subscribers to your mailing list on either a single-opt in and a double opt-in basis.
It transmits emails that are reactive and permits you to preview smartphone versions of your e-newsletters very readily.
It includes a helpful landing page creator – but bear in mind you need to be on a more expensive strategy to get the fully functional version of this.

Disadvantages of Getresponse
The drag and drop interface for designing mails may be a little bit on the fiddly side.
The data capture forms provided aren’t responsive and you can not control when and in which they’re displayed on your site.
CRM performance needs to be improved substantially before it could be thought of as a replacement for a standalone CRM product.
There is a limited selection of RSS-to-HTML e-newsletter templates provided.
You can just use’web-safe’ fonts from e-newsletters, which can make the templates seem marginally less slick than those supplied by competing products.
The pricing structure is a little confusing, with users having to cover something of a premium to access the landing page creator tool.
The free trial limits the amount of subscribers you can send messages into 1000.
The landing page add-on does not allow you to perform A/B evaluations, meaning that so as to gain this functionality you’re forced to use a more expensive program than you might like.
DKIM authentication is only on the more expensive’Max’ plans.
