Background Email Marketing Design
If I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what could you say? Email Marketing Design
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries today, email marketing continues to be Dominated by the same large players for the previous decade. Which means they get encouraged very deeply and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So today, in this review, I’ll be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it stands its own ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the switch.

Like most email marketing providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the software.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information like your organization name, website, Industry, address, company size, list size and even the kind of content you intend to send.
Then, you need to verify your Website (or domain ).
This remains part of the acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to that domain so they can email you a verification link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Steps, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, assess your Website, and determine whether you are a fantastic match for their services.
(In other words, they are making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and play with the features, but you won’t have the ability to send anything before approved.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
However, while these steps are not perfect for getting started, it Does help stop malicious users from damaging everybody’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to Deal with The majority of your email advertising.
(We’ll get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But whether it is a new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always some excuse to send a more immediate email.
That’s where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Produce Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular effort: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Variations, such as subject line, from title and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Don’t start your broadcast email, together with the choice of changing the subject line and email articles.
– RSS campaign: Create a recurring campaign That sends new content to subscribers using your site’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few additional options, the Majority of these will follow The exact same step-by-step process of a normal effort.
So let’s walk you through it.
Once you click on to create your campaign, you’ll be asked to Select a preferred editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can change to the Templates tab and choose from one of their pre-designed email templates — that will move you to the dragn’ drop editor .
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to select From which is somewhat on the low side, however, the layouts are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you’d just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to use, Making customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the cubes in the sidebar to include distinct Types of articles to your email, including videos, merchandise columns, and societal connections.
After making your adjustments, simply click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be taken to the recipients’ options where you are able to choose your groups or sections.
The tab also allows one To develop segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting isn’t quite perfect.
Finally, right before sending, you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, if that’s immediately, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Email Marketing Design
Managing Your Clients
Having granular control over your readers is arguably one of The most essential aspects of any email marketing software now.
Because highly personalized efforts Are Essential if You are searching to increase opens, clicks, and, most importantly, your conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”label” subscribers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different approach.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll see two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically rules.
Your subscribers belong to a segment only when they fulfill the Specified principles, and will be automatically inserted or removed accordingly.
Here’s what setting up a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can even combine Principles, in addition to an alternate rule if the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for classes, and despite the difference in name, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but finally decided against it)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or through an Automation rule — which we’ll get to in a moment — and they have no value aside from what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this stage, you’ll begin to understand At which Segments and Groups are typically used, however, MailerLite delivers a hand in the event you’re uncertain:
Basically, groups are more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple contributors together according to a common denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I’ll admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. Besides, they’re optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their particular areas, such as title, company, and country.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers together with Your custom field data in distinct columns… or can easily add these fields to your types which will only apply to prospective subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added to a form:
I won’t go too much to the form Stuff here since I have a whole section on this below, but this is the strategy I’d recommend if you wished to use this attribute.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field data from new Readers, you can pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I am barely scratching the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it is important that you understand this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to say MailerLite has their contributor Management and personalization features on stage. Email Marketing Design
If you’re not impressed with what you have seen up to Now, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you will be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Isn’t winning any awards, it will offer a fantastic base to work from if, for example the majority people, you don’t have that natural eye for design.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all finally do the same job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further construct or change your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual site builders, and it is better than some dedicated alternatives *Infection * WPBakery.
Together with the fundamental building blocks, you can use elements like Hero segments, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
No, it will not be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite really Provides a Adequate pair of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a whole lot to cover .
Let us begin with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then put on your website to display it on specific pages.
Despite beginning super basic, the form designer allows you To personalize everything in the kind style, fields, background, title, input fields and, of course, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your copy in real time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there’s more to some form than simply its physical appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form functions, including adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There’s even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And talking of the success page…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded form also prevents users .
Last but certainly not least, you Can assess the way your form screens on mobile by shifting the toggle to reactive mode.
You won’t be able to make any design changes here, but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that is an overview of the Embedded form but like I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of the setup Procedure is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do provide a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is at least as simple to use for this form kind.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me to a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new options under form types This time around:
Contemplating paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this amount of control over popup types.
And, like before, you can play with the styling options to get it Matched with your branding.
Finally, you can Select the near Behavior of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text option, or have both.
This is really where most email Marketing platforms would leave you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Statistics in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation stats, and form signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you specific reporting for this effort.
This is where you’ll find some statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading environment, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into individual areas of this report for a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see your readers interacted with your mails in relation to another.
Reports for automations will also be Available under the’Automations’ tab, even though I found these to be less enlightening than effort reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will get the available statistics more than sufficient to fulfill their needs.
What’s email marketing without a dashboard of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The good news? If you’ve used a visual workflow builder, then You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is easy, clean and simple to navigate — something which certainly can not be said for each and every email marketing software.
After establishing your trigger, you can Start adding measures to your workflow.
These measures could be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a conditional split, or an action, such as moving a contributor or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where readers Are unsubscribed if they don’t open my email within seven days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign because it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.)
For Instance, there’s now no automation for moving Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into various classes that trigger new automation workflows. It is just much less efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when creating new mails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to add your subject line that then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the review.
This time, but as Soon as You’ve established your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you back into the automations workflow rather than the usual sending alternatives.
Finally, your email will probably be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation block, which means it’s possible to find an idea about what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on paper, it is really much faster than what I’m utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, you will likely find that this downgrade in performance.
It’s quick enough for me, Personally, but I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there is 1 Kind of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and that I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on the way Subscribers interact with all the webpages on your website.
This Sort of behavioral targeting only isn’t available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or intend to use, you may want to skip this one. Email Marketing Design
The cost of MailerLite is one of those tools biggest Selling points, and let’s face it, we all love a good bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) to get up to 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding on your mails using this plan, it’s still an wonderful alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the top plans?
It ends up, at approximately half of the Cost of the competition generally, MailerLite is by far among the least expensive options available on the industry. Plus, if you are willing to pay yearly, you can also get a much better discount.
In fact, I have not been able to locate anything that does exactly the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of the very few email marketing tools to disrupt The (very crowded) sector in recent years, and that’s no easy feat.
While it’s not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
