Introduction Email Marketing Demystified

MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online businesses now, email marketing has been Dominated by the same big players for the previous ten years. Which means that they get promoted very heavily and achieve a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.

Like most email marketing providers Nowadays, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information like your company name, site, Industry, address, business size, list size and even the kind of content you plan to send.
Then, you need to confirm your Website (or domain name).
This is still part of the approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is related to this domain so they can email you a confirmation link.
Once you’ve completed those Measures, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, assess your Website, and determine whether you are a fantastic match for their service.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to utilize the software to create campaigns and play with the features, but you will not have the ability to send anything before accepted.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
But while these measures aren’t ideal for getting started, it Does help prevent malicious users from damaging everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to handle Nearly all your email marketing.
(We will get to automations soon, don’t worry.)
But whether it is a brand new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always some excuse to send a more instant email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Produce Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Versions, including subject line, from name and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not start your broadcast email, together with the choice of altering the subject line and email articles.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to subscribers using your site’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few additional choices, the Majority of these will follow The same step-by-step procedure of a normal campaign.
So let’s walk you through it.
Once you click to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Pick a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can change to the Templates tab and choose from among the pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor .
In the time of writing, there are 21 email templates to select From which is somewhat on the low side, however, the layouts are super modern.
And, of course, if you would just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I will select the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to use, Making customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the cubes in the sidebar to include different Kinds of articles to your email, including videos, merchandise columns, and societal links.
After making your adjustments, just click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be carried to the recipients’ options where you are able to choose your groups or segments.
The tab also allows you To build segment-like rules on-the-fly, in case your targeting is not quite perfect.
Finally, right before sending, you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, whether that is instantly, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Email Marketing Demystified
Managing Your Clients
Having granular control over your subscribers is arguably one of The most important facets of any email marketing software today.
Because highly personalized efforts are necessary if You are searching to increase clicks, opens, and, most importantly, your conversions.
And while most providers allow you to”tag” subscribers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different approach.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll notice two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially principles.
Your readers belong to a segment only when they fulfill the Specified rules, and are automatically added or eliminated so.
Here is what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice how you can also blend Rules, as well as an alternate rule when the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and despite the difference in title, These behave much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it)
Unlike Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or through an Automation rule — that we’ll get to in a moment — and they have no value besides what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand At which Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite offers a hand in the event you’re uncertain:
Basically, groups are much more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple subscribers together based on a common denominator.
A tad confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. Besides, they are optional.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this area with their own areas, such as name, business, and country.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your readers together with Your custom field data in distinct columns… or can easily add these fields to a types which will only apply to prospective subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added to a form:
I will not go too much to the form Stuff here since I have a whole section on this below, but this is the strategy I would recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field information from new Readers, you can pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I am barely scraping the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you know that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it is reasonable to state MailerLite has their subscriber Direction and personalization features on point. Email Marketing Demystified
If you are not impressed by what you’ve seen up to Now, then maybe The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, you’ll be Able to pick from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Isn’t winning any awards, it does offer a fantastic base to work from if, like the majority people, you don’t have that pure eye for design.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all finally do the same job; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or change your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual site builders, and it is already better than some dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the fundamental building blocks, you can use components like Hero segments, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
It will not be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime soon, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Adequate pair of form building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there’s a whole lot to cover here.
Let us start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then put on your website to show it on specific pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer lets you To personalize everything from the kind style, subjects, background, name, enter fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which gives you a Opportunity To visualize your copy in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates, but as you know, there’s more to some form than simply its physical appearance.
Clicking the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form works, such as adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There’s even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And talking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded form and prevents users from redirecting.
Last but certainly not least, you Can assess the way your form displays on cellular by shifting the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any layout changes , but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that’s an Summary of this Embedded form but like I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of the setup Procedure is identical, you will find A few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth selection, they do provide a good base to work from and the editor is at least as simple to use for this form kind.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template takes me to a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new options under form types Now around:
Considering paid tools such as Thrive Leads exist for ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this amount of control over popup forms.
And, as before, you can perform the styling options to get it Matched up with your own branding.
Last, you can Select the close Behaviour of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text option, or have .
This is really where most email Marketing platforms will leave you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Statistics in the main dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click info, Subscriber development, automation stats, and kind signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you special reporting for this campaign.
This is where you’ll discover a few more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying surroundings, email client and more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary user…
…but if you really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into different areas of this report for a more detailed breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also displays a click map, so You can see your readers interacted with your mails in relation to one another.
Reports for automations are also Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, though I found to be less enlightening than effort reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting port, and most will get the available statistics more than enough to fulfill their demands.
What is email advertising with no dashboard of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this particular review.
The great news? If you have used a visual workflow builder, then You’ll instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, The automations interface is easy, clean and easy to navigate — something that certainly can’t be said for each and every email marketing program.
After setting your trigger, you can begin adding measures to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a conditional split, or an action, such as moving a subscriber or upgrading their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I set together, where readers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within seven days.
There are innumerable Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite should have no trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign since it lacks a number of the conditional components. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.. )
For example, there’s now no automation for transferring Readers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these actions can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into various classes that trigger new automation workflows. It is just much less efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when creating new mails In the automation workflow builder.
After having an email cube to The workflow, you’ll be asked to add your topic line which then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Editor:
Now, you’ll be briefly Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, but once you’ve established your email, clicking on the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you back into the automations workflow rather than the usual sending alternatives.
Finally, your email address will probably be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is having a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, so it’s possible to get an concept about what it contains at a glance.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on paper, it is really much faster than what I’m used to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you’ll probably find this a downgrade in performance.
It is quick enough for me, Personally, but I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there’s one type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and I think it’s important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or measure ) based on how Readers interact with the pages on your website.
This Sort of behavioral targeting just is not available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or intend to use, you might want to skip this one. Email Marketing Demystified
The cost of MailerLite is one of those tools largest Selling things, and let us face it, most of us love a good bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) to get up to 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding in your emails using this program, it’s still an wonderful alternative for those starting out.
And what about the top programs?
It turns out, at approximately half of the Cost of this competition generally, MailerLite is by far one of the cheapest options available on the market. Additionally, if you are willing to pay annually, you can also get a much greater discount.
In Reality, I have not been able to locate anything that does exactly the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of those very few email marketing tools to interrupt The (very crowded) sector in the last couple of decades, and that’s no simple feat.
While it is not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
