MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online businesses now, email marketing has been Dominated by the identical large players for the previous decade. Which means they get encouraged very deeply and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the marketplace, causing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.

Like most email advertising providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the software.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information like your company name, website, Business, address, business size, record size and also the kind of content you plan to send.
Then, you need to verify your Website (or domain name).
This remains part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply inquire which email is associated to this domain in order that they can email you a confirmation link.
Once you’ve completed these Steps, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, assess your Website, and determine whether you’re a fantastic fit for their services.
(Quite simply, they’re making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and play with the attributes, but you won’t have the ability to send anything until approved.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
But while these steps aren’t ideal for getting started, it Does help stop unscrupulous users from hurting everybody’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to Deal with Nearly all your email advertising.
(We will get to automations shortly, do not worry.)
But whether it’s a new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always some excuse to send a more immediate email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Produce Campaign’ will provide you several options.
– Regular campaign: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Variations, including subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not open your broadcast email, with the choice of altering the subject line and email content.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends new content to subscribers using your website’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few added options, the Majority of these will follow Exactly the exact same step-by-step process of a normal campaign.
So let us walk you through it.
Once you click on to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Pick a favorite editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can switch to the Templates tab and select from one of the pre-designed email templates — that will move you into the dragn’ drop editor .
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to choose From which is a little on the low side, but the layouts are super modern.
And, of course, if you’d just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this instance, I will choose the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to use, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also utilize the blocks in the sidebar to add distinct Types of content to your email, including videos, merchandise columns, and social links.
After making your adjustments, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be carried to the recipients’ choices where you can choose your groups or sections.
The tab also allows one To build segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting is not quite right.
Finally, before sending, you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, if that’s immediately, at a set time/date, or according to your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Email Marketing 101
Managing Your Clients
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably among The most important facets of any email advertising program today.
Because highly personalized efforts Are Essential if You’re searching to increase opens, clicks, and, above all, your conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”tag” readers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different approach.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll notice two Choices; Segments and Groups.
Segments are basically principles.
Your subscribers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified principles, and will be automatically inserted or eliminated so.
Here is what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice how you can even blend Rules, in addition to an alternate rule when the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and despite the difference in name, These act much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it.)
Unlike Segments, Groups are updated manually or via an Automation principle — that we’ll get into in a moment — and they have no value besides what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this stage, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, but MailerLite delivers a hand in the event you’re unsure:
Basically, groups are more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments allow you to lump multiple subscribers together according to a common denominator.
A tad confusing, I’ll admit… but I feel it’s a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. In any case, they’re optional.
Last, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You’ll notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own fields, such as title, company, and country.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your subscribers together with Your custom field data in distinct columns… or may easily add these fields to a forms which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test field I made and added into a form:
I won’t go too much to the form Things here since I have an entire section on that below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wished to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve collected your custom field data from new Subscribers, you can pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Custom field.
I am barely scraping the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you understand this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it’s reasonable to say MailerLite has their contributor Management and personalization features on point. Email Marketing 101
If you are not impressed with what you’ve seen up to Now, then maybe The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you’ll be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Isn’t winning any awards, but it does offer a fantastic base to work from if, like most people, you don’t have that natural eye for layout.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, though They ultimately do the same job; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I have used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is already better than a few dedicated solutions *Infection * WPBakery.
Together with the fundamental building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
It will not be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all 3 form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually offers a Decent set of form building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there is a whole lot to cover here.
Let us begin with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to display it on specific pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer allows you To customize everything from the kind style, fields, background, title, enter fields and, of course, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which Provides you a Opportunity To visualize your copy in real time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there’s more to a form than simply its physical appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form works, including adding extra fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There’s a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which can replace the embedded kind and prevents users from redirecting.
Last but surely not least, you Can assess how your form displays on mobile by shifting the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t be able to make any layout changes , but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of the Embedded form but as I said before, you may even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of this setup process is identical, you will find Still a few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive choice, they do offer a fantastic foundation to work from and the editor is at least as easy to use for this form kind.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template takes me into a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new options under form types This time around:
Considering paid programs like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to see this amount of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can perform with the styling options to get it Matched up with your own branding.
Last, you can Select the close Behavior of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text option, or have both.
That is where most email Marketing platforms will leave you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation analytics, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you specific coverage for that effort.
This is where you’ll discover some statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading environment, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the ordinary consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into individual areas of this report for a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Mail’ tab also shows a click map, so You can see your subscribers interacted with your emails compared to one another.
Reports for automations are Available under the’Automations’ tab, although I found to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will get the available statistics more than sufficient to fulfill their demands.
What’s email advertising without a dash of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The good news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, then You will immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and simple to navigate — something which certainly can not be said for each and every email marketing software.
After setting your trigger, you can Start adding steps to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a bubble break, or an act, like transferring a subscriber or updating their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed when they don’t open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities in regards to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite should have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign because it lacks some of the conditional elements. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.)
For example, there’s now no automation for moving Subscribers directly into a different automation.
That being said, the Majority of these actions can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into different classes that activate new automation workflows. It’s simply not as effective…. yet.
Another question of efficiency here is when generating new emails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email cube to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your subject line which then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the review.
This time, but as Soon as You’ve established your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you back into the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email will probably be Loaded into your own automation.
A Wonderful touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation block, so you can find an concept about what it contains at a glimpse.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on newspaper, it’s really much faster than what I’m used to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a fantastic example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, you’ll likely find this a downgrade in performance.
It is quick enough for me, Personally, however I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there’s 1 type of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, also that I think that it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or measure ) based on how Readers interact with the webpages on your site.
This kind of behavioral targeting just isn’t available in MailerLite at this time, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you may want to skip this one. Email Marketing 101
The cost of MailerLite is no doubt one of the tools biggest Selling points, and let’s face it, most of us love a good bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding in your emails using this plan, it is still an amazing alternative for anyone starting out.
And what about the top plans?
It turns out, at approximately half the Cost of this rivalry generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the least expensive options available on the market. Additionally, if you are willing to pay yearly, you are also able to get a much better discount.
In Reality, I have not been able to find anything that does the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is among those very few email marketing tools The (very crowded) industry in the last couple of decades, which is no simple feat.
While it is not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and all at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
