Background Email Email Marketing
When I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what would you say? Email Email Marketing
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online industries now, email advertising continues to be Dominated by the identical large players for the last ten years. Which means that they get encouraged very deeply and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, causing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So now, in this review, I’ll be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to see if it really stands its own ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the change.

Like most email advertising providers these days, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the software.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, site, Industry, address, business size, record size and also the type of content you intend to send.
Then, you need to verify your Website (or domain name).
This remains part of this acceptance process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is associated to that domain so they could email you a verification link.
As Soon as You’ve completed those Measures, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite staff will review your application, check your Website, and ascertain whether you are a fantastic fit for their services.
(Quite simply, they are making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As shown above, you’ll still be Able to use the software to create campaigns and perform with the features, but you will not have the ability to send anything until approved.
I had been”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these measures are not perfect for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from hurting everyone else’s deliverability.
If you are anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to handle The majority of your email advertising.
(We’ll get to automations shortly, do not worry.)
But if it is a new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there is always some excuse to send a more instant email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the brand new’Produce Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular effort: A Conventional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, including subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to subscribers who Don’t open your broadcast email, with the option of altering the subject line and email content.
– RSS campaign: Create a recurring campaign That sends fresh content to subscribers using your website’s RSS feed.
Aside from a few additional choices, most of these will follow Exactly the same step-by-step procedure of a standard campaign.
So let us walk you through it.
Once you click to create your campaign, you’ll be requested to Select a favorite editor, whether that’s the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
You can change to the Templates tab and choose from among their pre-designed email templates — that will move you to the dragn’ drop editor by default.
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to choose From which is a little on the low side, however, the designs are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you would just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll select the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Which makes customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the blocks in the sidebar to add different Kinds of content to your email, such as videos, product columns, and societal connections.
After making your changes, just click’Done Editing’ and you’ll Be taken to the recipients’ choices where you can select your groups or segments.
The tab also allows one To build segment-like rules , in case your targeting is not quite perfect.
Finally, right before sending, you’ll get to the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, if that’s immediately, at a set time/date, or according to your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Email Email Marketing
Managing Your Subscribers
Possessing granular control over your subscribers is arguably among The most important aspects of any email advertising software now.
Because highly personalized campaigns are necessary if You are looking to increase clicks, opens, and, most importantly, your conversions.
And while many providers Permit You to”tag” readers in order To target them more effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different strategy.
When you open up your subscriber dash, you’ll notice two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially rules.
Your readers belong to a section only when they fulfill the Specified principles, and will be automatically inserted or eliminated accordingly.
Here’s what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice the way you can also blend Principles, in addition to another rule if the first does not exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The next tab is for classes, and despite the difference in title, These act much like your usual”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are upgraded manually or through an Automation principle — that we’ll get into in a minute — and they have no value aside from what you actually call them.
As you start to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, however, MailerLite offers a hand in case you’re unsure:
Basically, groups are much more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber foundation, whereas Segments permit you to lump multiple subscribers collectively based on a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I will admit… but I feel it’s a fair trade-off For the added flexibility. In any case, they’re discretionary.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own fields, such as name, company, and nation.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking on the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they really work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your readers together with Your custom field information in separate columns… or may easily add these fields to a types which will only apply to future readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I made and added to a form:
I will not go too much into the shape Things here since I have an entire section on that below, but this is the strategy I’d recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field data from fresh Subscribers, you are able to pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I’m barely scraping the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it’s important that you know this is a feature you can use.
Overall, it is fair to say MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on point. Email Email Marketing
If you’re not impressed by what you’ve seen up to Now, then maybe The webpage builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, then you’ll be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Isn’t winning any awards, it does offer a great foundation to work from if, like the majority of us, you don’t have that natural eye for design.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all finally do the identical task; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will Provide you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is better than a few dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Along with the fundamental building blocks, you can use components like Hero segments, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
No, it will not be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this thing over-delivers on all three form types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite really offers a Adequate set of type building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this same interface, so there’s a lot to cover .
Let’s begin with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are created inside MailerLite so as to get An embed code, which you can then put on your site to display it on specific pages.
Despite beginning super basic, the form designer lets you To customize everything from the kind style, fields, background, title, input fields and, of course, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which Provides you a chance To visualize your copy in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there is more to a form than simply its appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will Make It Possible for you to configure how the Form works, including adding extra fields and setting a custom success page.
(There’s even a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, That can replace the embedded form and prevents users .
Last but surely not least, you Can assess the way your form screens on mobile by shifting the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any design changes here, but it makes Sense to check, nevertheless.
So that is an overview of the Embedded form but as I said before, you may also create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the Vast Majority of the installation Procedure is identical, there are A few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive selection, they do offer a good base to work from and the editor is just as simple to use for this form type.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template takes me to a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new choices under form types This time around:
Contemplating paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it’s pretty impressive to see this amount of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can play the styling options to get it Matched with your branding.
Last, you can choose the close Behaviour of your type under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text choice, or have both.
That is really where most email Marketing platforms will leave you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your effort Data in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click data, Subscriber development, automation analytics, and form signups.
Clicking into any effort will Give you special coverage for that campaign.
This is where you’ll find a few more advanced statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, studying environment, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average user…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, it is possible to click into different areas of this report to get a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
By Way of Example, the’View Email’ tab also shows a click map, so You can see your subscribers interacted with your mails compared to another.
Reports for automations are Accessible under the’Automations’ tab, though I found these to be less insightful than campaign reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and many will get the available statistics more than sufficient to fulfill their needs.
What’s email advertising without a dash of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could simply make or break this particular review.
The great news? If you have used a visual workflow builder, You will instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, The automations interface is simple, clean and simple to navigate — something that certainly can’t be said for every email marketing software.
After setting your trigger, you can begin adding measures to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, including a Delay, a conditional split, or an act, such as moving a subscriber or updating their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I set together, where readers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within seven days.
There are innumerable Possibilities in regards to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite ought to not have any trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it’s not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign because it lacks a number of the conditional elements. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For Instance, there’s now no automation for moving Subscribers directly into another automation.
That being said, most of these actions can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into different groups that activate new automation workflows. It’s just much less efficient…. yet.
Another question of efficacy here is when creating new mails From the automation workflow builder.
After adding an email block to The workflow, you will be asked to put in your topic line which appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered previously in the critique.
This time, however, once you’ve created your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you straight back into the automations workflow instead of the usual sending options.
Ultimately, your email address will probably be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, so it’s possible to find an idea of what it contains at a glimpse.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on newspaper, it is actually much quicker than what I’m utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you’ll likely find that this downgrade in functionality.
It is quick enough for me, Personally, but I guess it’s all relative.
Before I wrap up this segment, there’s 1 type of automation You will not find in MailerLite, and I think it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or step) based on how Subscribers interact with all the pages on your site.
This Sort of behavioral targeting only isn’t accessible MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or plan to use, you might want to skip this one. Email Email Marketing
The Price of MailerLite is no doubt one of the tools biggest Selling points, and let’s face it, most of us love a fantastic deal.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) to get as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your mails using this plan, it’s still an amazing option for those starting out.
And what about the top plans?
It ends up, at approximately half the Price of the competition on average, MailerLite is by far among the least expensive options available on the industry. Additionally, if you’re ready to pay annually, you can also get an even greater discount.
In Reality, I haven’t been able to find anything that does exactly the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of the very few email advertising tools to interrupt The (very crowded) sector in the last couple of years, and that’s no easy feat.
While it’s not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, speed and simplicity, and all at a price point you’ll seriously struggle to conquer.
