Recently however, Getresponse’s feature set has developed quite a bit, to the point at which it’s getting more of an’all-in-one’ marketing solution.
Besides email advertising, it also provides webinar hosting, landing pages, and some CRM (client relationship management) functionality.
We are going to discuss all these attributes in depth below, but first, let’s look in pricing.
Getresponse’s attribute set is possibly among the most comprehensive out there.
Not only does this provide all the crucial stuff you would expect from an email marketing platform – list templates, hosting, autoresponders, analytics and so on, but as mentioned above, it has recently been expanding the attribute set to the point at which it is morphing into an all-in-one / CRM-style advertising and marketing platform.
The inquiry is whether Getresponse is a jack of all trades and master of not – let us drill down to the key features to find out.
Up until very recently Getresponse support was amongst the most comprehensive available for email marketing tools: the company offered phone support together with live chat support, email support and assorted online tutorials / tools.
Sadly, the phone support has been discontinued. Instead you’ll need to use live chat (24/7) or email service. To be fair, most similar e-marketing platform suppliers only offer you both of these channels – if telephone support is a deal-breaker for you then you may wish to consider Aweber, which still provides it (you can read our Aweber review ).
In terms of the caliber of Getresponse service, I have not had to use it very frequently (a fantastic thing) but when I have I have found it for a small mixed bag (less of a good thing). A number of the live chat service I have received was excellent, and I have not had to wait too long to chat with a broker; the email service less so.
Some of the feedback I have from our readers will suggest that there do have to be improvements made concerning the caliber of service Getresponse offer. As with a number of these types of companies, I expect it boils down to who you get daily. Email Autoresponder Service
Getresponse provides some very comprehensive reporting and analytics options. You get all the Fundamentals of course – open rate, click-through, unsubscribe Prices and so forth – but in addition to that you will find some very nifty features Which Are worth a Specific mention, specifically:

Additionally, you will find a lot of templates to choose from — around 500 — and they’re presented in easy-to-understand classes, so it’s generally pretty straightforward to find a good beginning point for a template and then edit it until you are delighted with the design.
If you’re really not pleased with the templates provided by Getresponse, there’s also the option of buying a template from a third party provider such as Theme Forest.
Another thing worth pointing out regarding Getresponse’s templates is that the range of RSS-to-email software options aren’t so extensive (only 11 templates are supplied – well short of the 700+ available for regular newsletters!) And some of them played up a bit for me when I tested them in Outlook (2010). I finally found something that worked for me personally, but I think there are definitely some improvements that could be created in this area. Email Autoresponder Service
Autoresponders are e-newsletters that are delivered to your subscribers at intervals depending on you — you can put them up so that immediately after someone signs up to a mailing list, they receive a welcome message in the company; a week after they can receive a discount offer for some of your goods or services; 3 months after they could obtain an encouragement to follow you on social networking. And so on.
Getresponse’s autoresponder functionality is a key selling point – it offers one of the most comprehensive feature sets available.

Recently Getresponse launched a new version of their new autoresponder functionality, called’Marketing Automation.’
This allows you to create automation workflows using a drag and drop builder – you basically set up an’automation flowchart’ that educates Getresponse what to do when a user opens a specific deal, clicks on a certain link etc..
This kind of functionality goes way beyond what’s traditionally been on offer from autoresponders, and lets you make an individual travel which may be customised to the nth level.

Landing page Builder
Online advertising campaigns that make use of landing pages will usually create far more leads if, rather than simply directing people to a (cluttered!) Website, they tip users to appealing’squeeze pages’ containing clear information and a tidy, well-designed data capture type.
Getresponse offers something quite beneficial in this respect that the majority of its competitors do not: a landing page creator (and one that is mobile-friendly to boot).

If you are serious about landing pages – and they are unquestionably a helpful attribute – then it is definitely worth considering one of the more expensive Getresponse plans.
You may buy the Landing Pages feature as an add-on for an extra $15 a month, however quite frustratingly, although the add-on permits you to show an infinite number of landing pages to potential subscribers, it doesn’t consist of A/B testing.
Accordingly, if I was considering the Getresponse landing page performance, I wouldn’t bother with this fairly half-baked add-on: I would just go for one of the pricier plans (which I suppose is what Getresponse want one to do) .

Customer Relationship Management
One of the most frustrating facets of using many well-known CRM tools is that the need to export data to CSV and straight back into your email marketing instrument in order to do mailouts (or the need to export info from your email marketing tool in your CRM to add leads to it).
So when I watched Getresponse recently introducing a new CRM attribute into their plans I had been intrigued – that could potentially eliminate all that data exporting and exporting, and keep everything neatly in one place.
Initially I was not that impressed with the Getresponse CRM tool as you could only use it to perform quite basic jobs: you could create sales pipelines, add contacts to them and monitor activity (emails, telephone calls etc.) with those contacts manually.
But recently Getresponse have upped their video game a bit on this front. The CRM is now integrated with all of Getresponse’s email marketing functionality and you can add users to a CRM pipeline according to their action (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or trigger autoresponders depending on the addition of a new contact into a pipeline phase.
An example of how to use this functionality would be as follows:
You can add a contact to a specific stage on a sales pipeline depending on the page of your website they completed a form on;
you could then send them a automated email tailored to that pipeline stage a couple of days afterwards;
and dependent on the action they took with regard to that email (clicking on a particular link etc) you can automatically move them onto another phase of the pipeline and automatically invite them into a webinar.
It’s very clever stuff, and I can’t think of any email marketing product offering such a tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. For this type of performance you normally need to look at dedicated — and more expensive — CRM products such as Salesforce and Infusionsoft.
But, it’s not all good news on the CRM front — there are some big things missing out of Getresponse’s CRM feature set.
The most glaring omission is e mail activity monitoring. Other CRM packages allow you to bcc a dropbox email address any time you send an email to a lead or client; doing this keeps a list of the communication in the contact’s history. There is currently no method of doing so with all the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an simple way to send one-to-one emails to leads or customers.
And oddly, when you click on a contact in a deal pipeline, you can’t see their contact activity — i.e., the actions they’ve taken (open, clicks etc.) with regard to previous communications which you have delivered to your prospects aren’t displayed. To observe this, you have to go from the CRM part of Getresponse, search for your contact in the contacts section and then click in their details. But guess what? Doing this does not display their history.
Task management is non-existent also: Unlike dedicated CRM tools, there is no way to assign tasks to other group members.
Eventually, adding contacts into a pipeline stage is difficult. You have to add contacts to a list , then go to the CRM pipeline, add a deal and search your lists to receive the contact you just added. From a usability standpoint this is very clunky and time consuming. You should just be able to put in a deal directly to a pipeline and then enter the contact details of your guide or customer at that point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is a bit half-baked. However, it is a new feature and the stuff it can perform on the automation aspect is impressive. I’m hopeful that this attribute gets developed over time because done right, it’s possibly a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the ability to host webinars on the platform.
Given that webinars are generally used as a lead-generation strategy, the notion of getting your email database along with your webinar tool under the exact same roof is extremely appealing.
The pricing is also very aggressive too compared to based webinar solutions. For example, among the primary webinar services, Gotowebinar, fees $199 a month to sponsor webinars with as much as 500 attendees; you can really do exactly the same (and a great deal more) with Getresponse for $165 (as long as your listing size is below 25,000).

The email deliverability rate – the percentage of e-newsletters sent that successfully reach inboxes – is obviously a very important thing to check at when selecting an email marketing tool.
Not all email marketing providers are that forthright about their deliverability rates; however, Getresponse seems pretty open about this, with this to say about it on their own website:
At GetResponse we’re often asked about the quality of our deliverability speed. Since deliverability is dependent upon many things, including the content of your messages, the deliverability rate could vary for each mailing. For all our customers jointly, however, we are proud to say our overall deliverability rate currently stands at 99%.
Clearly you are going to need to choose the organization’s term for this, but assuming it is true, it is a good rate and inspires confidence that the vast majority of emails you send using Getresponse will reach their receivers.
Furthermore, Getresponse really gives you the deliverability rate of every message on your email analytics – this is something I have not encountered on competing goods’ metrics. A thumbs up for it.
I do have to pull Getresponse on one thing relating to deliverability nevertheless: to guarantee a high deliverability rate, it’s advisable to use a system named DKIM email authentication. You are able to use DKIM using Getresponse – but only on the more expensive Getresponse’Max’ plans.
Although I have not encountered any deliverability difficulties using the cheaper plans, competing goods don’t force you to invest in a more expensive plan to avail of the feature — it’d be good to see Getresponse being more generous here.

A double opt-in procedure is best for verifying the folks subscribing to a list are using actual email addresses and contributes to cleaner information and more precise stats (because open rates etc. ) are calculated according to a list comprising just real email addresses).
Now, the fantastic news here is that Getresponse allows you to take advantage of either opt-in approach – this isn’t true with all competing goods. Thus a thumbs up for Getresponse to be flexible on this.
You are probably thinking that this sounds pretty fine — but to be honest, I think there is a great deal of room for advancement with regard to Getresponse kind templates.
For a start, they’re not responsive (i.e.they won’t resize themselves automatically to match the device they’re being watched on).

Overall, Getresponse is pretty straightforward to use. It is certainly easy enough to perform all of the fundamentals: import contacts, create campaigns, set up autoresponders and check statistics and the interface is pretty clean and intuitive.
In terms of how it stacks up against its rivals in this respect, I’d assert that Campaign Monitor is a tiny bit more user friendly, and Mailchimp has a slicker user interface (although one which makes locating certain performance a little bit tricky at times).
1 place I feel that might be significantly better in the user-friendliness standpoint is the Getresponse e-newsletter editor.
Whilst its drag-and-drop strategy does in theory provide a very flexible way to create blocks of articles and move them about an e-newsletter, in practice it’s fairly clunky to use and can cause accidental deletion of content, or placement of it in the incorrect portion of the e-newsletter.
If you can get your head around it, and practice using it a little bit, it will result in a helpful tool – it’s just that the execution of it could be somewhat better.
Additionally, as explained above, the CRM instrument could be far better from a usability point of view adding contacts to deals could be unnecessarily difficult.
The 30-day free trial which Getresponse provides is fully operational and the free trial isn’t contingent upon supplying credit card details.
This helps you avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for that trial and today I am getting charged for a product I don’t use” scenario.
The only down side to this free trial is that it limits the amount of subscribers it is possible to send to to 1000. It would be useful if that could be increased a little, as it would help potential users try out the tool in more’real-world’ situations.

At the database end of things, Getresponse’s pricing is pretty competitive too – you can sponsor a database containing 1,000 email addresses for $15 per month using Getresponse, compared to $29 with Aweber; $59 on Campaign Monitor (unlimited send).
Mailchimp’s monthly fee for a 1,000 record database will be the like Getresponse’s; and Mad Mimi provides a slightly cheaper, if much less operational offering for $12 per month.

Some improvements to Getresponse do need to be made however, especially where the email programmer is concerned – its own drag and drop interface is more fiddly and less responsive than it should be. A lot of improvements can be made to the data capture types too, especially for consumers wanting to exhibit them on mobile devices.
And from what I gather from reader feedback, there are developments that could be made into the service offering.
All in all though I speed Getresponse very highly – you receive considerable bang for your buck with this product.
