Recently however, Getresponse’s feature set has evolved quite a bit, to the point where it’s getting more of an’all-purpose’ marketing solution.
Besides email advertising, it also provides webinar hosting, landing pages, and a few CRM (client relationship management) performance.
We’ll discuss all these features in depth below, but first, let’s look at pricing.
Getresponse’s attribute set is possibly one of the most comprehensive out there.
Not only does it provide all the key stuff you would expect from an email advertising platform – record hosting, templates, autoresponders, analytics and so on, but as mentioned previously, it’s been expanding the attribute set to the point at which it’s morphing into an all-in-one / CRM-style marketing platform.
The question is if Getresponse is a jack of all trades and master of none – let us drill down into the key qualities to find out.
Up until quite recently Getresponse support was one of the most comprehensive available for email advertising tools: the firm offered phone support alongside live chat support, email service and various online tutorials / resources.
Sadly, the phone support has now been discontinued. Instead you’ll have to use live chat (24/7) or email support. To be honest, many similar e-marketing platform providers only offer you both of these stations – if phone support is a deal-breaker for you you might want to contemplate Aweber, which still supplies it (you can read our Aweber review ).
Concerning the quality of Getresponse service, I’ve never needed to use it quite often (a fantastic thing) but once I’ve I have discovered it to be a small mixed bag (less of a good thing). A number of those live chat service I have received was excellent, and I haven’t had to wait too much time to chat with an agent; the email support less so.
Some of the comments I’ve got from our readers will suggest that there do need to be improvements made in terms of the quality of service Getresponse offer. Much like a number of these types of companies, I anticipate it often boils down to that you get on the day. Email Autoresponder
Getresponse offers some very comprehensive analytics and reporting options. You get all the Fundamentals of track – open speed, click-through, unsubscribe rates and so forth – but also to that you will find some very nifty features Which Are worth a Specific mention, specifically:

Mailchimp and Aweber offer some similar reporting performance (especially around sales tracking) but Getresponse’s reporting tool is decidedly one of most featured on the market (it certainly trounces the stats options offered by Mad Mimi and Campaign Monitor).
Thus far so good with Getresponse, but in regards to templates, Getresponse arguably drops down a bit.
Regrettably, the templates provided out of the box look somewhat dated; they aren’t as attractive as those provided by Mailchimp or even Campaign Monitor (and I marginally prefer Aweber’s offering here too).
On the other hand, the templates are very tweakable – you can change fonts, layouts and imagery easily enough using the controls provided; and of course there’s nothing to prevent you designing your HTML email template and minding the code for this.
Furthermore, there are a lot of templates to choose from — around 500 — and they are presented in easy-to-understand categories, so it’s generally pretty simple to locate a good starting point for a template and then edit it before you’re delighted with the plan.
If you’re really unhappy with the templates provided by Getresponse, there is also the choice of buying a template from a third party supplier such as Theme Forest.
Another thing worth pointing out regarding Getresponse’s templates is the assortment of RSS-to-email software options are not very extensive (just 11 templates are provided – well short of their 700+ available for routine newsletters!) Recently Getresponse launched a brand new version of the new autoresponder functionality, known as’Marketing Automation.’
This permits you to create automation workflows with a drag and drop builder – you basically install an’automation flowchart’ that educates Getresponse what to do if a user opens a particular offer, clicks on a specific link etc..
This type of performance goes way beyond what’s traditionally been on offer from autoresponders, and allows you to make an individual travel that can be customised to the nth level.

It is important to note, however, that these more advanced marketing automation features are only available on the pricier programs – the’Guru’ program and up. Email Autoresponder
Landing page Builder
Online advertising campaigns which use landing pages will usually create far more leads if, rather than simply directing individuals to some (cluttered!) Site, they tip users to attractive’squeeze pages’ comprising clear info and a tidy, well-designed data capture form.
Getresponse provides something very useful in this respect that the majority of its rivals do not: a landing page founder (and one that’s mobile-friendly to boot).
Products like Campaign Monitor and Aweber ask that you use a third party (and paid-for) landing page creating tool like Unbounce or Instapage; Mailchimp recently introduced a landing page functionality but it is yet to become sophisticated at Getresponse’s.
But unless you’re on a Getresponse’Pro’,’Max’ or’Enterprise’ plan, the Getresponse landing page functionality is rather limited: you can just create 1 landing page, which can simply be displayed 1,000 times a month.
Also, and very importantly, you can’t use the landing page A/B testing performance on the cheapest Getresponse program (where the system shows a sample of your users different versions of your landing page, calculates conversion speeds, and finally rolls out the best performing landing page automatically).
If you are serious about landing pages – plus they’re certainly a useful feature – then it is definitely worth considering one of the more expensive Getresponse plans.
You can buy the Landing Pages attribute as an add-on for an additional $15 per month, however very frustratingly, although the add-on allows you to show an infinite amount of landing pages to potential subscribers, it does not include A/B testing.
Therefore, if I had been considering the Getresponse landing page functionality, I wouldn’t bother with this fairly half-baked add-on: I would just go for a few of the more expensive plans (which I guess is what Getresponse would like one to do!) .
Getresponse was ahead of its competitors for quite some time with its responsive email layout performance, which automatically adjusts your e-newsletter’s template so that when a user is reading it onto a mobile device, the layout and fonts will be optimized for the device in question.
Most competing products have captured up on this today, and extend responsive email templates, but Getresponse is far better than many similar products as soon as it comes to displaying a responsive preview of your e-newsletter – you just hit a’mobile preview’ button to get a quick snapshot of what your email looks like on a smartphone (see picture right).
Not just that but you can’flip’ the smartphone trailer around, so that you can preview what your own email looks like when the screen is used in either portrait or landscape mode. Email Autoresponder
Customer Relationship Management
Among the most frustrating aspects of using many famous CRM tools is that the need to export data to CSV and straight back to your email marketing tool in order to do mailouts (or the need to export data from the email marketing tool into your CRM to add leads to it).
So when I saw Getresponse recently introducing a brand new CRM feature into their plans I had been intrigued – this could possibly do away with all that data exporting and importing, and keep everything neatly in one place.
Initially I was not that impressed with the Getresponse CRM tool since you can only use it to perform rather basic jobs: you can create sales pipelines, add contacts to these and track activity (mails, phone calls etc.) with these contacts manually.
But recently Getresponse have upped their game somewhat on this particular front. The CRM is currently integrated with all of Getresponse’s email marketing functionality and you can add users to a CRM pipeline according to their action (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or activate autoresponders depending on the accession of a new contact into a pipeline stage.
An example of how to use this functionality would be as follows:
It is possible to add a contact to a specific stage on a revenue pipeline based on the page of your site they finished a form on;
you can then send them a automated email tailored to that pipeline period a couple of days afterwards;
and based on the actions they took with regard to that email (clicking on a particular link etc) you can automatically move them onto another stage of the pipeline and invite invite them to a webinar.
It’s very clever stuff, and that I can not think of any email marketing product offering this kind of tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. For this type of performance you normally must look at committed — and more costly — CRM products such as Salesforce and Infusionsoft.
However, it’s not all good news on the CRM front — there are a few big things missing from Getresponse’s CRM attribute set.
The most glaring omission is e mail activity tracking. Other CRM packages allow you to bcc a dropbox email address any time you send an email to some lead or client; doing so keeps a list of the communication in the contact’s history. There’s now no method of doing this with the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an simple way to send one-to-one mails to prospects or customers.
And strangely, when you click on a contact in a deal pipeline, you can not see their contact action — i.e., the actions they have taken (open, clicks etc.) in regards to previous communications that you have sent to your prospects are not displayed. To observe this, you have to go out of the CRM section of Getresponse, hunt for your contact in the contacts section and then click on their details. But guess what? Doing this doesn’t exhibit their deal history.
Task management is non-existent too: unlike committed CRM tools, there is no way to assign tasks to other group members.
Eventually, adding contacts into a pipeline stage is tough. You need to add contacts to a list , then go to the CRM pipeline, include a deal and search your lists to receive the contact you just added. From a usability standpoint this is very clunky and time consuming. You should just have the ability to put in a bargain right to a pipeline and enter the contact information of your guide or client at that point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is somewhat half-baked. However, it is a new feature and the stuff it could do on the automation side is impressive. I’m hopeful that this attribute gets developed over time because done right, it is possibly a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the capability to sponsor webinars on the stage.
Given that webinars are usually used as a lead-generation strategy, the notion of having your email database and your webinar tool under the same roof is extremely attractive.
The pricing is also very aggressive too by comparison to established webinar solutions. For example, among the primary webinar services, Gotowebinar, fees $199 a month to sponsor webinars with up to 500 attendees; you can actually do the same (and a great deal more) with Getresponse for $165 (as long as your list size is below 25,000).
With respect to attendee limits, the Getresponse’Guru’ plan permits you to sponsor a webinar with around 100 participants; the’Max’ plan’s cap is 500.
You can even purchase webinars performance as an add-on to a more affordable plan: $40 per month buys you a 100 attendees limitation, $99 per month buys you a 500 attendees restrict. It’s not clear what your options are if you will need to host larger scale webinars compared to that however.

Ultimately webinar functionality is potentially a very helpful feature to have sitting on your e-marketing arsenal and its inclusion as a feature gives Getresponse a very significant advantage over its key competitors, particularly once you believe that you can link it in using a built in CRM tool (more on that in a moment). The email deliverability rate – the proportion of e-newsletters sent that successfully hit inboxes – is always an important thing to check at when choosing an email marketing instrument.
Not all email marketing suppliers are that forthright in their deliverability prices; but Getresponse seems pretty open about that, with this to say about it in their website:
At GetResponse we are frequently asked about the quality of the deliverability rate. Since deliverability depends on many things, including the content of your messages, the deliverability rate may vary for every mailing. For all our customers collectively, however, we’re pleased to say our general deliverability rate now stands at 99%.
Clearly you are going to have to take the company’s term for this, but assuming it’s true, it’s a good rate and inspires confidence that the vast majority of emails you send using Getresponse will reach their receivers.
What’s more, Getresponse really gives you the deliverability rate of each message in your email analytics – this is something I have not encountered on competing products’ metrics. A thumbs up for it.
I really do need to pull Getresponse on one thing relating to deliverability nevertheless: to ensure a high deliverability rate, it is a good idea to use a system named DKIM email authentication. You can use DKIM using Getresponse – but only on the more expensive Getresponse’Max’ programs.
Though I’ve not encountered any deliverability problems utilizing the cheaper plans, competing goods don’t force you to invest in a more expensive strategy to avail of the feature — it’d be good to see Getresponse becoming more generous here.
There are two methods you can use to add subscribers to a mailing list: having a’only opt-in’ or a’double opt-in’ process.
If you utilize a single opt-in process, the individual registering to your own mailing list is added to your mailing list the minute they hit the submit button on your sign up form.
With a double opt-in procedure, the individual registering to your list is sent an email containing a confirmation link that s/he must click before being subscribed.
The most important advantage of one opt-in process is that it makes it really simple for users to sign up for your mailing list; it also generally increases conversion speed and so the amount of readers on your record. A dual opt-in procedure is better for verifying the people subscribing to your list are using real email addresses and leads to cleaner data and more precise stats (because open rates etc. ) are calculated according to a list comprising only real email addresses).
The fantastic news here is that Getresponse permits you to take advantage of either opt-in approach – this is not the case with all competing products. So a thumbs up for Getresponse to be flexible on this.
You’re probably thinking that all this sounds pretty good — but to tell the truth, I think there’s a great deal of room for advancement with respect to Getresponse kind templates.
For a start, they’re not responsive (i.e.they won’t resize themselves automatically to match the device they are being watched on).
Additionally, no controllers are offered by Getresponse to change forms off or on on specific devices or pages of your website. In terms of how it stacks up against its rivals in this regard, I’d assert that Campaign Monitor is a little bit more user friendly, and Mailchimp includes a slicker user interface (although one that makes locating certain performance a little bit tricky at times).
One area I think that could be significantly better from a user-friendliness standpoint is that the Getresponse e-newsletter editor.
Whilst its drag-and-drop strategy does in theory provide a very flexible way to create blocks of content and move them about an e-newsletter, in practice it is fairly user friendly to use and can cause accidental deletion of material, or placement of it at the wrong part of the e-newsletter.
If you’re able to get your head about it, and practice using it a little bit, it will result in a useful tool – it’s only that the implementation of it could be somewhat better.
Additionally, as described above, the CRM instrument could be far better from a usability point of view adding contacts to deals can be unnecessarily difficult.
The 30-day free trial that Getresponse supplies is completely operational and the free trial isn’t contingent upon supplying credit card details.
This makes it possible to avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for this particular trial and now I’m getting charged for a commodity that I do not use” scenario.
The only down side to the free trial is that it restricts the amount of subscribers it is possible to send to 1000. It would be useful if this could be raised a little, as it would help potential users try out the tool in more’real world’ scenarios.

There are a number of differences between the’Email’,’Pro’ and’Max’ programs but for me the main ones are:
CRM – Getresponse provides a client relationship manager tool on its own’Pro’ programs up
Landing pages – you can only avail of landing pages that enable split testing and boundless views if you are on a’Pro’ plan or higher
Webinars – that performance is not accessible whatsoever on the’Email’ plan and the amount of webinar attendees is restricted for the’Pro’ and’Max’ plans at 100, 500 respectively (it’s uncertain what the limit is about the’Enterprise’ plan).
Users – you can only have one user account on the’Email’ plan; by contrast you get 3 on’Guru’, 5 ‘Max’ and 10 on’Enterprise’.
Pricing Vs Competitors
So long as you’re pleased to use one of the entry-level’Email’ plans, the pay-per-month Getresponse plans are on the whole more affordable than those supplied by many of its key competitors, particularly in case you’ve got a reasonably high number of email addresses on your own database.

* Campaign Monitor’s pricing structure is dependent not just the amount of email addresses in your database however on the number of emails you send per month too. If you’re delighted to limit the number of emails delivered via Campaign Monitor (from the example above, to 50k mails ), you can expect to pay a monthly charge of $89, still considerably higher than Getresponse’s.
The sole well-known service I could think of that comes from considerably more affordable is Mad Mimi, which charges $42 a month to sponsor up to 10,000 email addresses (note however that the performance offered by Mad Mimi is nowhere near as extensive as Getresponse’s or really another products mentioned above).
It’s also worth pointing out that Mailchimp offers thinner pricing bands, meaning that based on the size of your listing, it might sometimes be a slightly cheaper option than Getresponse.
In the database end of things, Getresponse’s pricing is really competitive too – you can sponsor a database comprising 1,000 email addresses for $15 a month using Getresponse, compared to $29 with Aweber; $59 on Campaign Monitor (infinite send).
Mailchimp’s monthly fee to get a 1,000 record database is the like Getresponse’s; and Mad Mimi supplies a slightly more affordable, if much less functional offering for $12 a month.
Two final things to be aware of about the pricing front:
Some competing suppliers — notably Mailchimp – provide completely free account for users with a small number of records (but these don’t supply the full range of features that you get on a paid program ).
As stated before, if you are prepared to pay upfront for 1 or 2 years, you can avail of substantial discounts the other competitors do not yet supply.
So the bottom line is that Getresponse is pretty competitive in the pricing section. However, what about attributes? Email Autoresponder
Getresponse represents one of the more cost-effective tactics to host and communicate using an email database.
It’s also one of the most intriguing products of its type – in that it provides email marketing, landing pages, CRM and webinars all under one roof. It is hard to think of any competing product that delivers this’all around’ proposition, and it is what continues to persuade us to use it to Style Factory’s email marketing.
Some developments to Getresponse do need to be made however, particularly where the email designer is concerned – its own drag and drop interface is more fiddly and not as responsive than it ought to be. A lot of improvements can be made into the data capture forms also, particularly for users wishing to display them on mobile devices.
And from what I gather from reader opinions, there are improvements that could be made to the support offering.
Overall though I rate Getresponse very tremendously – you get considerable bang for your buck with this item.

Its reporting and thorough split testing attributes are powerful.
Getresponse is transparent about deliverability rates, publishing characters on its own website and providing deliverability data for person e-newsletters you send.
It provides an extremely flexible approach to information segmentation – more elastic than many competing products.
It allows you to add subscribers to your mailing list on either a single-opt in and also a double opt-in basis.
It transmits responsive emails and permits you to preview smartphone variations of your e-newsletters very easily.
It includes a helpful landing page creator – but bear in mind you need to be on a more expensive plan to get the fully operational version of the.
You can test all its features free for 30 days without needing to enter credit card details.
Disadvantages of Getresponse
The drag and drop interface for designing mails can be a little bit on the fiddly side.
The information capture forms provided aren’t responsive and you can’t control when and in which they’re displayed on your website.
CRM functionality has to be improved considerably before it can be considered a substitute for a standalone CRM merchandise.
There is a limited selection of RSS-to-HTML e-newsletter templates provided.
You can only use’web-safe’ fonts in e-newsletters, which may make the templates seem slightly less slick than those provided by competing goods.
The pricing structure is a little confusing, with users having to cover something of a superior to get the landing page creator tool.
The free trial restricts the number of readers you can send messages into 1000.
The landing page addition does not let you execute A/B evaluations, meaning that so as to gain this functionality you are forced to use a more expensive plan than you may like.
DKIM authentication is only available on the more expensive’Max’ plans.
