Lately however, Getresponse’s feature set has evolved quite a bit, to the point where it is becoming more of an’all-in-one’ marketing alternative.

Getresponse’s attribute set is possibly among the most comprehensive on the market.
Not only does it provide all of the crucial stuff you’d expect from an email advertising platform – list templates, hosting, autoresponders, analytics and so forth, but as mentioned previously, it has been expanding the attribute set to the point at which it’s morphing into an all-in-one / CRM-style advertising and marketing platform.
The inquiry is whether Getresponse is a jack of all trades and master of not – let’s drill down to the crucial features to find out.
Up until quite recently Getresponse support was one of the most comprehensive available for email advertising tools: the company offered phone service alongside live chat support, email service and various online tutorials / tools.
Sadly, the phone support has now been discontinued. Instead you are going to have to use live chat (24/7) or email support. To be fair, most similar e-marketing platform providers only offer both of these stations – if telephone service is a deal-breaker for you you may wish to consider Aweber, which nonetheless provides it (you can read our Aweber review here).
In terms of the caliber of Getresponse service, I’ve never needed to use it quite often (a fantastic thing) but once I’ve I have discovered it for a small mixed bag (less of a good thing). Some of those live chat support I’ve received has been excellent, and I haven’t needed to wait too long to talk to an agent; the email support less so.

Getresponse provides some very comprehensive reporting and analytics options. You get all the basics of track – open rate, click-through, unsubscribe Prices and so on – but in addition to that there are some very nifty features that are worth a particular mention, namely:

Mailchimp and Aweber offer some comparable reporting functionality (particularly around sales tracking) however Getresponse’s reporting tool is definitely one of most fully featured on the market (it certainly trounces the stats options offered by Mad Mimi and Campaign Monitor).
So far so good with Getresponse, however, in regards to templates, Getresponse arguably falls down a little.
Regrettably, the templates supplied out of the box look a bit dated; they are not as attractive as those offered by Mailchimp or even Campaign Monitor (and I marginally prefer Aweber’s offering here also ).
On the other hand, the templates are extremely tweakable – you can alter fonts, layouts and vision easily enough using the controls supplied; and naturally there is nothing to prevent you designing your HTML email template and importing the code for it.
Furthermore, there are tons of templates to choose from — around 500 — and they are presented in easy-to-understand classes, therefore it’s generally pretty straightforward to find a good beginning point to get a template and then edit it before you are delighted with the plan.
If you’re really not pleased with the templates offered by Getresponse, there is also the option of purchasing a template by a third party supplier such as Theme Forest.
Another thing worth pointing out seeing Getresponse’s templates is that the range of RSS-to-email software options aren’t so extensive (just 11 templates are provided – well short of their 700+ available for routine newsletters!) And a few of them played up a bit for me when I tested them (2010). Autoresponders are e-newsletters which are delivered to your subscribers at intervals depending on you personally — you can set them up so that instantly after somebody signals up to a mailing list, they get a welcome message in the business; a week after they could receive a discount offer for some of your goods or services; three months later they could receive an invitation to accompany you on social media. Getresponse’s autoresponder functionality is a key selling point – it provides one of the most comprehensive feature sets available.

Landing page Builder
Online advertising campaigns that use landing pages will usually create far more leads in the event, rather than simply directing individuals to some (cluttered!) Website, they point users to appealing’squeeze pages’ containing clear info and a tidy, well-designed data capture form.
Getresponse offers something quite beneficial in this respect that most of its competitors do not: a landing page founder (and one that is mobile-friendly to boot).
Products such as Campaign Monitor and Aweber ask that you make use of a third party (and paid-for) landing page generating tool such as Unbounce or Instapage; Mailchimp recently introduced a landing page functionality but it’s yet to become as sophisticated at Getresponse’s.
However, unless you’re on a Getresponse’Pro’,’Max’ or’Enterprise’ plan, the Getresponse landing page performance is rather limited: you can just create 1 landing page, which could only be displayed 1,000 times per month.
Additionally, and above all, you can not use the landing page A/B testing performance on the least expensive Getresponse plan (where the machine indicates a sample of your customers different versions of your landing page, calculates conversion speeds, and ultimately rolls out the best performing landing page mechanically ).
If you are serious about landing pages – and they are certainly a helpful attribute – then it’s definitely worth looking at one of the more expensive Getresponse plans.
You can buy the Landing Pages attribute as an add-on to get an extra $15 a month, however quite frustratingly, even though the add-on permits you to display an infinite number of landing pages to potential subscribers, it doesn’t include A/B testing.
Accordingly, if I had been interested in the Getresponse landing page functionality, I would not bother with this rather half-baked add-on: I’d just go for one of the more expensive programs (which I guess is exactly what Getresponse would like you to do) .
Getresponse was before its rivals for quite some time using its responsive email design functionality, which automatically corrects your e-newsletter’s template so that if an individual is reading it on a mobile device, the layout and fonts will be optimized for the device in question.
Most competing products have caught up on this now, and extend responsive email templates, but Getresponse is better than most similar products when it comes to displaying a reactive preview of your e-newsletter – you just hit on a’cellphone preview’ button for a quick snapshot of what your email looks like on a smartphone (see image right).

Customer Relationship Management
Among the most frustrating facets of using many famous CRM tools is that the need to export data to CSV and back into your email marketing instrument in order to perform mailouts (or the necessity to export data from your email marketing tool in your CRM to include prospects to it).
When I saw Getresponse recently introducing a brand new CRM feature into their plans I was intrigued – that could potentially do away with all that data exporting and importing, and keep everything neatly in one area.
Initially I wasn’t that impressed with the Getresponse CRM tool as you could only use it in order to perform rather basic jobs: you can create sales pipelines, add contacts to them and track activity (mails, telephone calls etc.) with these contacts manually.
But recently Getresponse have upped their game somewhat on this front. The CRM is currently integrated with all Getresponse’s email marketing operation and you can add users to a CRM pipeline based on their activity (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or trigger autoresponders depending on the accession of a new contact to a pipeline stage.
An example of how you could use this functionality would be as follows:
You can add a contact to a particular point on a revenue pipeline based on the page of your site that they finished a form on;
you could then send a automated email tailored to this pipeline period a couple of days afterwards;
and based on the actions they took in regards to this email (clicking on a certain link etc) you can automatically move them onto another phase of the pipeline and invite invite them into a webinar.
It’s very clever stuff, and I can not think of any email marketing product offering such a tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. For this kind of functionality you normally must appear at committed — and more expensive — CRM products like Salesforce and Infusionsoft.
However, it’s not all good news on the CRM front — there are a few big things missing out of Getresponse’s CRM attribute set.
The most glaring omission is email activity monitoring. Additional CRM packages allow you to bcc a dropbox email address any time you send an email to some lead or client; doing this keeps a record of the communication in the contact’s history. There is now no way of doing this together with the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an easy way to send one-to-one mails to leads or customers.
And oddly, when you click a contact in a bargain pipeline, you can not see their contact activity — i.e., the actions they’ve taken (open, clicks etc.) with regard to previous communications that you have sent to your leads aren’t displayed. To see this, you have to go from the CRM part of Getresponse, hunt for your own contact in the contacts section and then click in their details. But guess what? Doing so doesn’t display their history.
Task management is non-existent too: Unlike dedicated CRM tools, there’s no way to assign tasks to other group members.
Finally, adding contacts to your pipeline stage is difficult. You have to add contacts to a list , then go to the CRM pipeline, include a deal and search your lists to receive the contact you just added. From a usability standpoint this is extremely clunky and time consuming. You should just be able to put in a deal directly to a pipeline and enter the contact details of your guide or client at that point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is somewhat half-baked. But that said, it’s a new feature and the stuff it could do on the automation aspect is remarkable. I’m hopeful that this feature becomes developed over time because done right, it is possibly a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the capability to sponsor webinars on the platform.
Given that webinars are usually utilized as a lead-generation tactic, the notion of having your email database along with your webinar tool under the same roof is very attractive.
The pricing is also very aggressive too compared to based webinar solutions. For example, one of the primary webinar providers, Gotowebinar, fees $199 a month to host webinars with as much as 500 attendees; you can really do the same (plus a great deal more) with Getresponse for $165 (as long as your list size is below 25,000).
With respect to attendee limits, the Getresponse’Guru’ plan permits you to host a webinar with around 100 participants; the’Max’ plan’s limit is 500.
You can also purchase webinars performance as a add on to a cheaper plan: $40 a month buys you a 100 attendees limit, $99 a month buys you a 500 attendees restrict. It’s not clear what your choices are if you need to host larger scale distributions compared to that however.

The email deliverability rate – the percentage of e-newsletters sent that successfully reach inboxes – is obviously an important thing to look at when selecting an email marketing instrument.
Not all email advertising providers are that forthright in their deliverability prices; but Getresponse seems reasonably open about that, with this to say about it on their own site:
At GetResponse we are frequently asked about the quality of the deliverability rate. Since deliverability depends on many things, including the content of your messages, the deliverability rate could vary for each mailing. For all our customers jointly, however, we are pleased to say our overall deliverability rate now stands at 99%.
Obviously you’re going to need to choose the organization’s term for this, but assuming it is true, it is a fantastic speed and inspires confidence that the vast majority of emails you send using Getresponse will achieve their receivers.
Furthermore, Getresponse really provides you the deliverability rate of each message in your email analytics – this is something I have not encountered on competing goods’ metrics. A thumbs up for it.
I really do need to pull Getresponse up on something concerning deliverability however: to guarantee a high deliverability rate, it is a good idea to use a system called DKIM email authentication. You are able to use DKIM with Getresponse – but just on the costlier Getresponse’Max’ programs.
Although I’ve not struck any deliverability difficulties using the less costly plans, competing goods don’t make you invest in a more expensive plan to avail of the feature — it would be good to see Getresponse becoming more generous here.

A dual opt-in process is best for verifying the people subscribing to a record are using real email addresses and contributes to cleaner data and more precise stats (because open rates etc. ) are calculated according to a list comprising just real email addresses).
The fantastic news here is that Getresponse allows you to take advantage of either opt-in approach – this isn’t true with all competing products. Thus a thumbs up for Getresponse for being flexible on this.
You are probably thinking that all this sounds pretty good — but to be honest, I think there’s a great deal of room for improvement with regard to Getresponse kind templates.
For a start, they are not responsive (i.e.they won’t resize themselves automatically to suit the device they are being watched on).
Furthermore, no controls are offered by Getresponse to switch forms off or on on specific devices or pages of your site. At the light of Google’s new approach to pop-ups (where websites can take a hit in search results if they exhibit’intrusive interstitials’ on cellular devices) this is a small concern.
To get around this, I generally avoid using Getresponse form templates, and make do using HTML embeded forms that I design myself, and also for popups I link my Getresponse into a growth-hacking instrument called Sumo (this allows me to change pop-ups off for cellular users, as well as display forms precisely as I’d like to and onto the webpages I need ). Overall, Getresponse is really straightforward to use. It is certainly easy enough to perform all the basics: import contacts, create campaigns, set up autoresponders and check numbers and the interface is pretty intuitive and clean.
In terms of how it stacks up against its rivals in this regard, I would argue that Campaign Monitor is a tiny bit more user friendly, and Mailchimp includes a slicker user interface (though one which makes locating certain functionality just a little bit tricky at times).
1 place I think that could be significantly better in the user-friendliness standpoint is the Getresponse e-newsletter editor.
Whilst its drag-and-drop strategy does in theory provide an extremely flexible way to make blocks of content and transfer them about an e-newsletter, in practice it is quite user friendly to use and can cause accidental deletion of content, or placement of it in the incorrect part of the e-newsletter.
If you’re able to get your head about it, and practice using it a little bit, it does result in a useful tool – it is only that the execution of it could be rather better.
Also, as explained above, the CRM instrument might be far better from a usability point of view adding contacts to deals can be difficult.
The 30-day complimentary trial that Getresponse provides is fully functional and the free trial isn’t contingent upon supplying credit card details.
This makes it possible to avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for that trial and now I’m getting charged for a commodity I do not use” scenario.
The only down side to this free trial is that it restricts the amount of subscribers it is possible to send to to 1000. It would be good if that could be raised a bit, as it would help prospective users try out the tool in more’real-world’ scenarios.

Webinars – that functionality is not accessible at all on the’Email’ strategy and the number of webinar attendees is capped for the’Pro’ and’Max’ programs at 100, 500 respectively (it is unclear what the limitation is on the’Enterprise’ plan).
Users – you can only have one user account on the’Email’ plan; by contrast you get 3 on’Pro’, 5 on’Max’ and 10 on’Enterprise’.
Pricing Vs Competitors
So long as you’re happy to use one of those entry-level’Email’ programs, the pay-per-month Getresponse plans are on the whole cheaper than those supplied by many of its key competitors, particularly in case you’ve got a fairly large number of email addresses on your own database.

If you’re happy to set a limit on the amount of mails sent via Campaign Monitor (from the case above, to 50k mails ), you can expect to pay a monthly charge of $89, still considerably higher than Getresponse’s.
The only well-known service that I can think of that comes from considerably more affordable is Mad Mimi, which costs $42 a month to host up to 10,000 email addresses (note however that the functionality offered by Mad Mimi is nowhere near as broad as Getresponse’s or indeed another products mentioned previously ).
Additionally, it is worth pointing out that Mailchimp offers narrower pricing bands, meaning that based on how big your list, it might occasionally be a slightly cheaper option than Getresponse.
In the smaller database end of things, Getresponse’s pricing is really competitive too – you can host a database containing 1,000 email addresses for $15 a month with Getresponse, compared to $29 with Aweber; $59 on Campaign Monitor (infinite send).
Mailchimp’s monthly fee to get a 1,000 record database is the same as Getresponse’s; and Mad Mimi provides a slightly more affordable, if less functional offering for $12 a month.
Two final things to be aware of about the pricing front:
Some competing suppliers — notably Mailchimp – provide free accounts for users with a small number of documents (but these don’t supply the full range of features that you get on a paid plan).
As mentioned earlier, if you are prepared to pay upfront for 1 or 2 decades, you can avail of significant discounts the other competitors do not yet provide.
So the bottom line is that Getresponse is pretty competitive in the pricing department. However, what about attributes? Eloqua Email Marketing Software Applications
Getresponse represents one of the more cost-effective tactics to host and speak using an email database.
It’s also one of the most intriguing products of its type – in that it provides email marketing, landing pages, CRM and webinars all under one roof. It’s hard to think of any rival product that delivers this’all round’ proposal, and it is what proceeds to convince us to use it for Style Factory’s email advertising.
Some improvements to Getresponse do need to be made nonetheless, particularly where the email programmer is concerned – its drag and drop interface is more fiddly and not as responsive than it should be. A lot of improvements can be made into the data capture forms too, particularly for consumers wishing to display them on mobile devices.
And from what I gather from reader opinions, there are improvements which could be made into the service offering.
All in all though I speed Getresponse very tremendously – you get considerable bang for your buck with this product.

There’s a limited range of RSS-to-HTML e-newsletter templates provided.
You can only use’web-safe’ fonts in e-newsletters, which may make the templates seem slightly less slick than those provided by competing products.
The pricing arrangement is a bit confusing, with users having to pay something of a premium to access the landing page creator tool.
The free trial restricts the amount of subscribers you can send messages into 1000.
The landing page add-on doesn’t let you perform A/B tests, meaning that in order to obtain this functionality you’re forced to use a more expensive program than you may like.
