If I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what would you say? Directiq
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like most online industries now, email advertising has been Dominated by the identical large players for the last decade. Which means they get encouraged very deeply and accomplish a great deal of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the market, inducing long-time users to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done precisely that.
So today, in this review, I’ll be tearing MailerLite from limb To limb to see whether it really stands its ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the switch.

Like most email marketing providers Nowadays, You’ll Need to Go through a review process before being able to properly use the program.
When you first register, you’ll be asked to finish your profile.
This includes information such as your organization name, site, Industry, address, business size, list size and also the type of content you intend to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Website (or domain name).
This is still part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is associated to that domain in order that they could email you a confirmation link.
Once you’ve completed these Steps, you ought to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, check your Site, and determine whether you’re a fantastic fit for their service.
(Quite simply, they are making sure you are not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll still be Able to utilize the software to make campaigns and play with the features, but you will not have the ability to send anything until accepted.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limit of 500 subscribers.
Here’s what the email said:
However, while these steps are not perfect for getting started, it Does help prevent malicious users from damaging everyone else’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely on automations to Deal with Nearly all your email advertising.
(We will get to automations soon, do not worry.)
But if it is a brand new blog article, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more instant email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Produce Campaign’ will provide you several options.
– Regular campaign: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split campaign: Multiple email Variations, including subject line, from name and, yes, even email content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to readers who Do not start your broadcast email, together with the choice of changing the subject line and email content.
– RSS effort: Produce a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your site’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few additional options, the Majority of these will follow Exactly the same step-by-step process of a standard effort.
So let’s walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your campaign, you’ll be requested to Select a preferred editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can switch to the Templates tab and select from one of the pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor by default.
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to select From which is somewhat on the low side, however, the layouts are super modern.
And, of course, if you’d just Prefer to reuse a previous email, you can click on the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll choose the first template from the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Making customizing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the blocks in the sidebar to include different Kinds of articles to your email, including videos, merchandise columns, and social links.
After making your adjustments, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be taken to the recipients’ choices where you can select your classes or sections.
The advanced tab also allows you To develop segment-like rules on-the-fly, in case your targeting is not quite perfect.
Finally, before sending, then you’ll get into the’Schedule’ screen.
This is where you control if your broadcast email should go Out, if that’s instantly, at a set time/date, or in accordance with your readers time zones.
Impressive, right? Directiq
Managing Your Subscribers
Possessing granular control over your readers is arguably one of The most essential facets of any email advertising program now.
Because highly personalized efforts Are Essential if You’re searching to increase opens, clicks, and, most importantly, your conversions.
And while many providers Permit You to”label” readers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite uses a slightly different strategy.
When you start up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll notice two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially rules.
Your readers belong to a segment only when they meet the Specified principles, and are automatically inserted or eliminated so.
Here is what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice how you can even combine Rules, as well as an alternate rule if the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and despite the difference in title, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the title to’Tags’, but finally decided against it.)
Contrary to Segments, Groups are updated manually or via an Automation principle — that we will get into in a minute — and they don’t have any value besides what you call them.
As you Begin to use this platform, you’ll begin to understand Where Segments and Groups are typically used, however, MailerLite offers a hand in case you’re uncertain:
Basically, groups are much more of a Deliberate action on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments permit you to lump multiple contributors together based on a frequent denominator.
A tad confusing, I will admit… but I believe it’s a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. In any case, they are discretionary.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to customize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their particular fields, such as title, business, and nation.
If You Would like to create your own custom fields, you can do so by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV file of your readers together with Your custom field data in distinct columns… or can easily add these fields to your forms which will only apply to prospective readers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I created and added to a form:
I will not go too much into the form Stuff here since I have a whole section on this below, but this is the strategy I would recommend if you wanted to use this attribute.
Again, as Soon as You’ve collected your custom field data from fresh Readers, you can pull them in to your email content and subject line.
Just click on the’Personalization’ drop down and select your Customized field.
I am barely scraping the surface Of what’s possible with custom fields, but it is important that you understand that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it’s fair to say MailerLite has their contributor Direction and personalization features on stage. Directiq
If you are not impressed with what you have seen up to Now, then maybe The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After selecting’Landing Pages’ from the forms page, then you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template selection Is not winning any awards, but it will offer a fantastic foundation to work from if, like most of us, you do not have that natural eye for layout.
I went ahead and chosen the’Lead Generation’ template, though They all finally do the identical task; collect an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual page builders, and this is already better than a few dedicated solutions *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the basic building blocks, you can use elements like Hero sections, popup buttons, testimonials and countdown timers.
It will not be replacing landing Page builders like Thrive Architect or LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all three kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email marketing tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Decent pair of type building tools.
Also, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there is a lot to cover here.
Let us start with your Bog-standard embedded form.
These forms are created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then place on your website to display it on particular pages.
Despite beginning super fundamental, the form designer allows you To personalize everything in the kind style, subjects, background, title, input fields and, of course, the button.
Form text can also be edited directly, which gives you a chance To visualize your copy in real time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there’s more to some form than simply its appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure the way the Form functions, including adding additional fields and setting a custom success page.
(There’s even a GDPR compliance alternative. Sweet.)
And talking of the success webpage…
…MailerLite also lets you customize the default message, That can replace the embedded form also prevents users from redirecting.
Last but surely not least, you Can check how your form displays on mobile by switching the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any design changes , but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an overview of the Embedded form but as I said before, you may even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of this installation process is identical, you will find A few differences I’d love to point out.
Unlike embedded forms, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most Comprehensive choice, they do offer a fantastic base to work from and the editor is just as simple to use for this form type.
Clicking on the’E-commerce’ template requires me into a preview Before moving to the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are some new choices under form types Now around:
Considering paid programs like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to observe this amount of control over popup types.
And, like before, you can play the styling options to get it Matched with your branding.
Finally, you can Select the near Behavior of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is the X icon, but you can swap this out for A”No thanks” text option, or have .
That is where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has one more trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Statistics in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from campaign open and click info, Subscriber growth, automation analytics, and kind signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you special reporting for that campaign.
This is where you’ll discover a few statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading environment, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average consumer…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into different areas of this report to get a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems under These reports.
For example, the’View Mail’ tab also displays a click map, so It’s possible to see how your readers interacted with your mails in relation to another.
Reports for automations are also Available under the’Automations’ tab, though I found these to be less insightful than effort reports.
Here’s a quick example:
Overall, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will get the available statistics more than sufficient to meet their demands.
What is email advertising without a dashboard of automation?
For most reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this review.
The great news? If you’ve used a visual workflow builder, then You’ll immediately feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and simple to navigate — something that certainly can’t be said for each and every email marketing software.
After establishing your trigger, you can begin adding steps to your workflow.
These steps can be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a bubble break, or an act, like transferring a subscriber or upgrading their records.
Here’s a simple workflow I set together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed when they don’t open my email within seven days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations like this, and MailerLite ought to have no trouble with the vast majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something like ActiveCampaign since it lacks a number of the conditional components. (Split, Visit, Goal, etc.)
For Instance, there’s now no automation for moving Readers directly into a different automation.
That being said, the Majority of these activities can still be achieved by moving Subscribers into various classes that trigger new automation workflows. It is simply not as efficient…. yet.
Another matter of efficacy here is when generating new emails From the automation workflow builder.
After having an email block to The workflow, you’ll be asked to put in your topic line that then appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the review.
This time, but once you’ve established your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will guide you straight back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending alternatives.
Ultimately, your email will be Loaded into your automation.
A Wonderful touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email inside your automation cube, which means you can get an idea of what it contains at a glance.
While this procedure may seem like A grind on newspaper, it’s really much quicker than what I’m utilized to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something like ConvertKit where The editor is loaded inside the automations builder, so you will probably find this a downgrade in performance.
It’s fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s one Kind of automation You will not find in MailerLite, also that I think it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to trigger an automation (or measure ) based on how Readers interact with all the pages on your website.
This Sort of behavioral targeting just isn’t accessible MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or intend to utilize, you may want to skip this one. Directiq
The cost of MailerLite is undoubtedly one of the tools biggest Selling points, and let us face it, most of us love a fantastic bargain.
For starters, they offer an unlimited free plan that includes All attributes (including premium) for as many as 1,000 subscribers.
While there is some subtle Branding on your emails using this program, it is still an wonderful alternative for those starting out.
And what about the top programs?
It turns out, at approximately half of the Cost of this competition generally, MailerLite is undoubtedly among the least expensive options on the industry. Plus, if you are ready to pay annually, you can also get an even greater discount.
In fact, I haven’t been able to find anything that does exactly the Exact Same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of those very few email advertising tools The (very crowded) sector in the last couple of years, and that’s no easy feat.
While it is not as quickly as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it works exceptionally well at just about anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the best balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking of giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you From the remarks. Directiq
