Not only does this provide all of the crucial stuff you would expect from an email advertising platform – record hosting, templates, autoresponders, analytics and so on, but as mentioned above, it has been expanding the attribute set to the point where it is morphing into an all-in-one / CRM-style advertising and marketing platform.
The inquiry is if Getresponse is a jack of all trades and master of none – let’s drill down to the key features to find out.
Up until quite recently Getresponse service was amongst the most comprehensive available for email advertising tools: the company offered phone service together with live chat support, email service and various online tutorials / tools.
Sadly, the telephone service has now been discontinued. Instead you are going to need to use live chat (24/7) or email service. To be fair, most similar e-marketing platform suppliers only offer you these two stations – if telephone service is a deal-breaker for you you may wish to consider Aweber, which nonetheless provides it (you can read our Aweber review ).

On the plus side, the templates are extremely tweakable – you can change fonts, layouts and vision easily enough using the controls supplied; and of course there’s nothing to stop you designing your HTML email template and minding the code for it.
Furthermore, there are a lot of templates to choose from — over 500 — and they are introduced in easy-to-understand classes, so it is generally pretty straightforward to locate a good beginning point for a template and edit it until you are delighted with the plan.
If you’re really not pleased with the templates offered by Getresponse, there is also the choice of purchasing a template from a third party supplier such as Theme Forest.
Another thing worth pointing out regarding Getresponse’s templates is the range of RSS-to-email software options are not very extensive (only 11 templates are supplied – well short of the 700+ available for routine newsletters!) And a few of them played up a bit for me when I tested them (2010). Landing page Builder
Online advertising campaigns that use landing pages will typically generate far more leads in the event, instead of simply directing individuals to a (cluttered!) Site, they point users to attractive’squeeze pages’ containing clear information and a tidy, well-designed data capture type.
Getresponse provides something very useful in this respect that the majority of its rivals don’t: a landing page creator (and one that is mobile-friendly to boot).
Products like Campaign Monitor and Aweber require you to make use of a third party (and paid-for) landing page generating tool such as Unbounce or Instapage; Mailchimp recently introduced a landing page functionality but it is yet to become as sophisticated at Getresponse’s.
However, unless you’re on a Getresponse’Pro’,’Max’ or’Enterprise’ plan, the Getresponse landing page functionality is fairly limited: you can just create one landing page, which can simply be displayed 1,000 times per month.
Also, and above all, you can’t utilize the landing page A/B testing performance on the cheapest Getresponse program (where the machine shows a sample of your customers different versions of your landing page, computes conversion speeds, and finally rolls out the best performing landing page automatically).
If you are serious about landing pages – plus they are unquestionably a helpful attribute – then it’s definitely worth considering among the more expensive Getresponse plans.
You can buy the Landing Pages attribute as an add-on to get an extra $15 per month, however quite frustratingly, although the add-on permits you to display an unlimited number of landing pages to potential subscribers, it does not consist of A/B testing.
Accordingly, if I was interested in the Getresponse landing page performance, I would not bother with this fairly half-baked add-on: I would just go for one of the more expensive plans (which I suppose is what Getresponse want one to do!) .

Customer Relationship Management
One of the most frustrating aspects of using many famous CRM tools is that the necessity to export data to CSV and back to your email marketing instrument as a way to do mailouts (or the necessity to export data from the email marketing tool into your CRM to include leads to it).
When I watched Getresponse recently introducing a new CRM attribute in their plans I was intrigued – that could possibly eliminate all that data exporting and importing, and keep everything neatly in one area.
Initially I was not that impressed with the Getresponse CRM tool since you can only use it to perform quite basic jobs: you can create sales pipelines, add contacts to them and monitor activity (mails, telephone calls etc.) with these contacts manually.
But lately Getresponse have upped their video game a bit on this particular front. The CRM is now integrated with all of Getresponse’s email marketing operation and you can add users into a CRM pipeline based on their action (form completions, email opens, purchases etc.) or trigger autoresponders depending on the addition of a new contact to a pipeline stage.
An example of how you could use this operation is as follows:
You can add a contact to a specific point on a sales pipeline based on the page of your website that they finished a form on;
you could then send them a automated email tailored to this pipeline period a couple of days later;
and based on the action they took with regard to this email (clicking on a certain link ) you can automatically move them on another phase of the pipeline and invite invite them to a webinar.
It’s very clever stuff, and I can’t think of any email advertising product offering such a tight integration between autoresponders and CRM pipelines. For this type of functionality you normally need to look at dedicated — and more costly — CRM products such as Salesforce and Infusionsoft.
However, it’s not all fantastic news on the CRM front there are some big things missing from Getresponse’s CRM attribute collection.
The most glaring omission is e mail activity tracking. Additional CRM packages allow you to bcc a dropbox email address whenever you send an email to some lead or customer; doing so keeps a list of this communication in the contact’s history. There’s currently no method of doing this with the Getresponse CRM, nor is there an easy way to send one-to-one emails to leads or customers.
And strangely, when you click on a contact in a bargain pipeline, you can’t see their contact activity — i.e., the actions they have taken (open, clicks etc.) in regards to previous communications that you have delivered to your prospects aren’t displayed. To observe this, you need to go from the CRM section of Getresponse, search for your contact in the contacts section and then click on their details. But guess what? Doing this doesn’t display their deal history.
Task management is non-existent too: Unlike committed CRM tools, there’s no way to assign tasks to other group members.
Finally, adding contacts into your pipeline stage is tough. You need to add contacts to a list , then visit the CRM pipeline, add a bargain and hunt your lists to receive the contact you just added. From a usability standpoint this is extremely clunky and time consuming. You should just be able to add a bargain right to a pipeline and then enter the contact details of your lead or customer at that point.
So as things stand, the Getresponse CRM is somewhat half-baked. However, it is a new attribute and the things it can do on the automation side is remarkable. I am hopeful that this attribute becomes developed over time because done right, it is possibly a game-changer for entrepreneurs and SMEs.
Getresponse recently introduced the ability to sponsor webinars on the platform.
Given that webinars are usually utilized as a lead-generation strategy, the notion of getting your email database along with your webinar tool under precisely the exact same roof is extremely attractive.

Obviously you’re going to have to choose the company’s word for this, but supposing it’s true, it’s a fantastic speed and inspires confidence that the vast majority of emails that you send using Getresponse will achieve their receivers.
Furthermore, Getresponse actually provides you the deliverability rate of every message on your email analytics – this is something I haven’t encountered on competing goods’ metrics. A thumbs up for it.
I do have to pull Getresponse up on something relating to deliverability however: to ensure a high deliverability rate, it’s advisable to use a platform named DKIM email authentication. You are able to use DKIM with Getresponse – but just on the costlier Getresponse’Max’ programs.
Though I’ve not encountered any deliverability problems using the cheaper plans, competing products don’t force you to invest in a more expensive strategy to avail of this feature — it would be good to see Getresponse being more generous here.

One place I think that could be significantly better from a user-friendliness standpoint is that the Getresponse e-newsletter editor.
Whilst its drag-and-drop approach does in theory provide a very flexible approach to make blocks of articles and move them around an e-newsletter, in practice it’s quite user friendly to use and can lead to accidental deletion of material, or placement of it at the incorrect part of the e-newsletter.
If you’re able to get your head about it, and practice using it a bit, it will result in a useful instrument – it’s just that the implementation of it could be rather better.
Also, as explained above, the CRM tool could be far better from a usability point of view adding contacts to deals could be unnecessarily difficult.
The 30-day free trial which Getresponse provides is fully functional and the free trial is not contingent upon supplying credit card details.
This helps you avoid that annoying”oops I forgot I signed up for that trial and today I am getting charged for a commodity I don’t use” scenario.
The only down side to this free trial is the fact that it limits the amount of readers it is possible to send to to 1000. It would be useful if this could be raised a little, as it would help potential users try out the tool in more’real world’ situations.

The sole well-known service I can think of that comes from considerably more affordable is Mad Mimi, which charges $42 per month to host up to 10,000 email addresses (note however that the functionality offered by Mad Mimi is nowhere near as broad as Getresponse’s or really the other products mentioned above).
It’s also worth pointing out that Mailchimp offers narrower pricing bands, meaning that based on the size of your list, it might sometimes be a slightly cheaper option than Getresponse.
In the database end of things, Getresponse’s pricing is really competitive too – you can host a database comprising 1,000 email addresses for $15 per month with Getresponse, compared to $29 with Aweber; $59 on Campaign Monitor (unlimited send).
Mailchimp’s monthly fee for a 1,000 record database is the same as Getresponse’s; and Mad Mimi provides a slightly cheaper, if much less functional offering for $12 per month.
Two final things to be aware of about the pricing :
Some competing providers — notably Mailchimp – offer free account for users that have a small number of records (but these don’t supply the entire range of features that you get on a paid plan).
As stated before, if you’re prepared to pay upfront for 1 or two years, you can avail of significant discounts the other competitors don’t yet supply.
So the bottom line is that Getresponse is fairly competitive in the pricing department. But what about features? Autoresponder System
Getresponse represents among the more cost-effective ways to host and speak using an email .
It’s also one of the most intriguing products of its type – in that it provides email marketing, landing pages, CRM and webinars all under one roof.
