When I asked you to name an email Marketing tool, what could you say? Antavo
MailChimp? Aweber? ActiveCampaign?
Like many online businesses today, email marketing continues to be Dominated by the identical big players for the last ten years. Which means that they get encouraged very deeply and achieve a lot of mindshare.
Now and then, however, an Underdog disrupts the marketplace, inducing long-time customers to question their loyalties.
MailerLite has done exactly that.
So today, in this short article, I will be ripping MailerLite from limb To limb to see if it stands its ground against the big boys…
…and, more importantly, whether youshould consider making the switch.

Like most email advertising providers Nowadays, you will need to Go through a review process before being able to correctly use the program.
When you first sign up, you’ll be asked to complete your profile.
This includes information such as your company name, site, Industry, address, business size, list size and even the type of material you intend to send.
Then, You Have to verify your Website (or domain ).
This is still part of this approval process, and MailerLite will Simply ask which email is related to this domain so they can email you a confirmation link.
As Soon as You’ve completed these Measures, you’ll need to wait it out.
The MailerLite team will review your application, assess your Website, and determine whether you are a good match for their service.
(In other words, they’re making sure you’re not a spammer/scammer)
As revealed above, you’ll nevertheless be Able to use the software to create campaigns and perform with the features, but you won’t be able to send anything until approved.
I was”partially” approved within a few hours, which gave me a Temporary limitation of 500 subscribers.
Here Is What the email said:
But while these steps aren’t perfect for getting started, it Does help prevent unscrupulous users from damaging everybody’s deliverability.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll rely upon automations to handle Nearly all your email marketing.
(We will get to automations shortly, don’t worry.)
But if it is a new blog post, podcast, or timely Announcement, there’s always a reason to send a more immediate email.
That is where’Campaigns’ come in.
Clicking the new’Produce Campaign’ will give you several choices.
– Regular campaign: A traditional broadcast email.
– A/B split effort: Multiple email Variations, including subject line, from name and, yes, even content. (Woop!)
– Auto resend: Resend to subscribers who Don’t open your broadcast email, together with the choice of changing the subject line and email content.
– RSS campaign: Produce a recurring campaign That sends new content to readers using your website’s RSS feed.
Apart from a few added options, most of these will follow The exact same step-by-step procedure of a normal effort.
So let us walk you through it.
As Soon as You click on to create your effort, you’ll be requested to Select a favorite editor, whether that be the dragn’ drop, rich text or HTML.
Otherwise, you can switch to the Templates tab and select from one of the pre-designed email templates — which will move you into the dragn’ drop editor by default.
In the time of writing, you’ll find 21 email templates to choose From which is somewhat on the low side, however, the layouts are super contemporary.
And, of course, if you’d just Like to reuse a previous email, you can click the’Recent Emails’ tab.
For this example, I’ll choose the first template in the library.
The editor is easy to work with, Which makes viewing these templates a 5-minute job.
You can also use the cubes in the sidebar to include different Types of articles to your email, such as videos, merchandise columns, and social links.
After making your changes, simply click’Done Editing’ and you will Be taken to the recipients’ options where you can choose your classes or sections.
The tab also allows you To build segment-like rules on-the-fly, in the event your targeting is not quite perfect.
Finally, before sending, you’ll get to the’Program’ screen.
This is where you control when your broadcast email should go Out, if that’s instantly, at a set time/date, or according to your subscribers time zones.
Impressive, right? Antavo
Managing Your Clients
Having granular control over your readers is arguably among The most essential aspects of any email advertising software now.
Because highly personalized efforts are necessary if You’re searching to increase clicks, opens, and, above all, your conversions.
And while most providers Permit You to”tag” readers in order To target them effectively, MailerLite utilizes a slightly different strategy.
When you open up your subscriber dashboard, you’ll notice two Options; Segments and Groups.
Segments are essentially principles.
Your subscribers belong to a section only when they fulfill the Specified principles, and will be automatically added or removed accordingly.
Here is what establishing a rule looks like:
Notice how you can even blend Principles, in addition to another rule if the first doesn’t exist.
Pretty smart, eh?
The following tab is for groups, and also the difference in name, These act much like your normal”tagging” system.
(MailerLite even debated Changing the name to’Tags’, but ultimately decided against it)
Unlike Segments, Groups are updated manually or via an Automation rule — that we’ll get into in a minute — and they don’t have any value aside from what you actually call them.
As you Begin to use this stage, you’ll Start to understand Where Segments and Groups are generally used, but MailerLite offers a hand in the event you’re uncertain:
Basically, groups are more of a Deliberate activity on a per-subscriber basis, whereas Segments permit you to lump multiple subscribers collectively based on a frequent denominator.
Somewhat confusing, I will admit… but I believe it is a fair trade-off For the additional flexibility. Besides, they’re optional.
Finally, the’Fields’ tab is used to personalize your email copy.
You will notice that MailerLite has Already populated this region with their own areas, such as name, company, and country.
If you want to create your own custom fields, you can do this by Clicking the’Add new field’ button.
So how do they actually work?
You can either upload a CSV record of your readers along with Your custom field information in separate columns… or can simply add these fields to a forms which will only apply to future subscribers.
Here’s a screenshot of a test area I made and added into a form:
I will not go too much to the form Things here since I have an entire section on this below, but this is the approach I would recommend if you wanted to use this feature.
Again, once you’ve gathered your custom field data from new Readers, you are able to pull them into your email content and subject line.
Just click the’Personalization’ drop down and choose your Customized field.
I am barely scratching the surface Of what is possible with custom fields, but it is important to understand that this is a feature you may use.
Overall, it is fair to say MailerLite has their subscriber Direction and personalization features on stage. Antavo
If you are not impressed with what you’ve seen so far, then perhaps The page builder will tickle your fancy.
After choosing’Landing Pages’ in the forms page, you will be Able to select from 8 pre-designed templates.
Again, while the template choice Is not winning any awards, it does offer a great base to work from if, for example most of us, you do not have that pure eye for layout.
I went ahead and selected the’Lead Generation’ template, however They all ultimately do the same task; accumulate an email address.
This time, the editor will give you 17 building blocks to Further build or alter your landing page.
Now, I’ve used my fair share of Visual page builders, and it is better than a few dedicated alternatives *cough* WPBakery.
Together with the basic building blocks, you can use components like Hero sections, popup buttons, reviews and countdown timers.
No, it won’t be replacing landing Page builders such as Thrive Architect or even LeadPagesanytime shortly, but credit where credit due, this item over-delivers on all three kind types.
Form Builder Tool
Unlike some email advertising tools, MailerLite actually Provides a Adequate set of type building tools.
Not only that, but you can also create popups and landing pages Through this exact same interface, so there’s a lot to cover .
Let’s start with your Bog-standard embedded type.
These forms are first created inside MailerLite in order to get An embed code, which you can then place on your site to show it on particular pages.
Despite starting off super basic, the form designer allows you To personalize everything in the kind style, fields, background, title, input fields and, clearly, the button.
Form text may also be edited directly, which gives you a chance To visualize your copy in real-time.
It would have been nice to have Some templates here, but as you know, there’s more to a form than just its appearance.
Clicking on the’Settings’ tab will allow you to configure how the Form functions, such as adding extra fields and establishing a custom success page.
(There’s a GDPR compliance option. Sweet.)
And speaking of the success page…
…MailerLite also enables you to customize the default message, Which will replace the embedded form also prevents users from redirecting.
Last but surely not least, you Can check the way your form displays on cellular by switching the toggle to responsive mode.
You won’t Have the Ability to make any layout changes here, but it makes Sense to test, nevertheless.
So that’s an Summary of this Embedded form but as I said before, you can even create popup forms in MailerLite.
While the majority of this installation process is identical, there are Still a few differences I’d like to point out.
Unlike embedded kinds, you can choose between a set of Templates:
While this isn’t the most In depth choice, they do offer a good foundation to work from and the editor is just as simple to use with this form type.
Clicking the’E-commerce’ template takes me into a preview Before moving into the editor.
Here, you’ll notice there are a few new choices under form types This time around:
Considering paid tools like Thrive Leads exist for both ribbons and slide-in forms, it is pretty impressive to observe this amount of control over popup types.
And, as before, you can perform the styling options to get it Matched up with your own branding.
Finally, you can Select the near Behaviour of your form under the’Settings’ tab.
The default option is that the X icon, but you can swap out this for A”No thanks” text option, or have .
This is really where most email Marketing platforms would render you, but MailerLite has yet another trick up its sleeve.
Reporting & Analytics
Like many tools, you’ll find a summary of your campaign Statistics in the dashboard.
Here you’ll see everything from effort open and click data, Subscriber growth, automation analytics, and form signups.
Clicking into any campaign will Give you special reporting for this effort.
This is where you’ll discover some statistics such as Unsubscribes, spam complaints, bounces, reading surroundings, email client and much more.
This should be plenty of Information for the average user…
…but in Case You really want To dig into the numbers, you can click into different areas of the report for a more comprehensive breakdown.
You can find some real gems beneath These reports.
For example, the’View Email’ tab also shows a click map, so It’s possible to see your readers interacted with your mails compared to another.
Reports for automations will also be Available under the’Automations’ tab, though I found these to be less enlightening than campaign reports.
Here’s a Fast example:
Total, MailerLite does a Stellar job with their reporting interface, and most will find the available statistics more than sufficient to meet their demands.
What’s email advertising with no dash of automation?
For many reading this, MailerLite’s automation capabilities Could easily make or break this particular review.
The great news? If you’ve ever used a visual workflow builder, You will instantly feel at home here…
Much like the rest of MailerLite, That the automations interface is simple, clean and easy to navigate — something that certainly can not be said for every email advertising program.
After setting your trigger, you can begin adding measures to your workflow.
These measures can be anything from sending an email, adding a Postpone, a conditional split, or an action, such as moving a subscriber or upgrading their records.
Here’s a straightforward workflow I put together, where subscribers Are unsubscribed if they do not open my email within 7 days.
There are countless Possibilities when it comes to workflow automations similar to this, and MailerLite should not have any trouble with the huge majority of use cases.
Granted, it is not quite as Feature-rich as something such as ActiveCampaign since it lacks some of the conditional components. (Split, Go To, Goal, etc.. )
For Instance, there’s now no automation for moving Readers directly into a different automation.
That being said, the Majority of these activities can Nevertheless Be achieved by moving Subscribers into different groups that activate new automation workflows. It is just not as effective…. yet.
Another question of efficacy here is when creating new emails In the automation workflow builder.
After having an email block to The workflow, you’ll be asked to put in your subject line that appears on the block itself.
From there, clicking the’Design email’ button will automatically fire up the Writer:
Now, you’ll be temporarily Redirected to the standard campaign creation wizard, which I covered earlier in the critique.
This time, but as Soon as You’ve created your email, clicking the ‘Done editing’ button will direct you back to the automations workflow instead of the usual sending options.
Finally, your email will be Loaded into your own automation.
A nice touch here is using a thumbnail preview of your Email within your automation cube, so you can get an concept about what it contains at a glance.
While this process may seem like A grind on newspaper, it is actually much faster than what I am used to with other email advertising tools — ActiveCampaign being a great example.
On the other hand, if you’ve come over from something such as ConvertKit where The editor is loaded within the automations builder, you will probably find this a downgrade in functionality.
It is fast enough for me, Personally, but I guess it is all relative.
Before I wrap up this section, there’s 1 Kind of automation You won’t find in MailerLite, and I think that it’s very important to highlight.
The ability to activate an automation (or measure ) based on the way Subscribers interact with the webpages on your website.
This Sort of behavioral targeting just isn’t available in MailerLite right now, so if it’s something you use or intend to use, you may want to skip this one. Antavo
The cost of MailerLite is no doubt one of those tools biggest Selling things, and let’s face it, we all love a good bargain.
For starters, they offer an infinite free plan that includes All features (including premium) for up to 1,000 subscribers.
While There’s some subtle Branding in your emails using this plan, it is still an wonderful option for those starting out.
And what about the premium plans?
It ends up, at approximately half of the Price of the rivalry on average, MailerLite is by far one of the least expensive options on the industry. Additionally, if you are ready to pay annually, you can also get a much better discount.
In fact, I have not been able to locate anything that does exactly the same job, cheaper.
MailerLite is one of those few advertising tools to interrupt The (very crowded) sector in the last couple of years, which is no easy feat.
While it is not as fast as ConvertKit, or as feature-rich As ActiveCampaign, or as template-heavy as MailChimp, it performs exceptionally well at virtually anything you can throw at it.
Overall, I find MailerLite strikes the perfect balance Between flexibility, simplicity and speed, and all at a price point you will seriously struggle to beat.
Thinking about giving it a spin? Let us know how it works for you From the comments. Antavo
